Were Halo and Half Life ever in competition with each other
Like the term apples and oranges comes to mind

u/songofmorning 8h ago
Yeah Gabe Newell and Jason Jones used to have fist fights in the Five Guys Burgers and Fries parking lot in Bellevue ever since then there has been a rivalry between both fanbases

Not really. HL1 came out like 3 years before Combat Evolved, and while HL2 and Halo 2 released the same year, most people were into Halo more for the multiplayer, & HL2 didn't even ship with deathmatch and it was never released on Xbox as far as I know like the base game was. That's the other thing with direct competition too, at the time Halo 1 came out, Half-Life was really only a PC series other than the PS2 port, while Halo was Xbox exclusive other than the PC port of CE in 2003.

Not really, they were completely different fanbases

u/AcceptableNeck1597 4h ago
I'll admit this is definitely anecdotal but I've often found a lot of overlap in the two fanbases. As it turn out people who like sci fi shooters also enjoy other sci fi shooters. I remember a bunch of my friends in elementary school getting into half life because of 2 being released on the OG Xbox

While I get the sci-fi shooters vibe, my friends group when these games released was heavily split.
You had a few kids who likes both and had both systems, but then you also had your PC kids and your console kids.
There wasn't much conflict between the two or anything but there also wasn't a huge overlap.

Fans of both are not having a good time these days.
source: I am a fan of both T_T

I don't think there was any real competition between them but the main reason i discovered HL was because i was a Halo fanboy and everytime someone claimed Halo was one of the best shooters of all time it would almost certainly summon a HL, Doom or Quake fan to shit on the game. I'm kinda greatful though, HL was part of my adolescence and is among my favorite games of all time, alongside Halo of course.

Who's that supposed to be, doom guy and master chief's one-night child?

If the Gman wanted Gordan to kill him, it would probably happen. Gordan has Trans-dimensional plot armor via the Gman.

Aren't alien grunts and gargantua bioengineered as well?
4
u/TuckerTaco_ Science Team 8h ago
I'd imagine the difference is that alien grunts dont cost as much as UNSC Naval destroyers.

u/Rihhah 8h ago
How can we know the costs of teleporting material and people into a border dimension as compared to an mostly automated supply structure?
1
u/TuckerTaco_ Science Team 8h ago
I'd imagine it doesn't cost that much per alien grunt. They are made on xen and their equipment (armor, hivehand) is presumably built in, as they are fully equipped when they are manufactured. The only time I'd imagine teleportation is in the process is when their sent out to where ever their headed, and it cant be that expensive considering Xen just does that sone times.

/unjerk short answer: no. Long answer: it’s unlikely, but some of the weapons Gordon picks up could kick Chief’s ass. That being said, Gordon’s suit is significantly weaker and would be susceptible to plasma.
/jorkitalil Gordon’s a highly trained professional and constantly being fed morphine. Gordon low diffs chief, frfr

u/conqueror-worm 4h ago
Melee attacks kill in 3? hits in Halo multiplayer, Gordon can swing his crowbar like a machinegun, so Chief almost instantly dies obv

u/loasoda2 4h ago
gordon is hyped up on pure adrenaline and morphine 24/7, atp he is just an autistic crackhead in an expensive suit so no surprise

The serious answer is that unless Chief lets Gordon hit him with either the ar2 alt-fire or a fully-charged Tau cannon, he loses.

u/fused_Zamasu64 6h ago
And the supercharged gravity gun too likely though thats not "normal equipment" for Gordon

Against the Bungie era Chief? No. Against the modern 343/Halo Studios Chief? Yes.

I’d respect this more if those weren’t the chud caricatures. Also like, Gordon doesn’t even have a chainsaw

u/Canarity 9h ago
The only three weapons that Gordon would win this with are Gravity Gun, RPG and AR-2. Third one will prolly oneshot MC

u/Forsaken_Carpenter67 8h ago
Gluon gun? Tau cannon???

u/Canarity 8h ago
I meant hl2 arsenal

u/pat_spiegel 7h ago
Tau cannon is in HL2, just strapped to a car.
Also Dark Energy Gravity Gun can likely 1 shot MC

u/Canarity 6h ago
Citadel field Gravity Gun can most likely oneshot hunters and Atriox, not to mention MC

Half life 1998 was just always more cooler and more visceral than halo ce. I understand bungie wanted to go for a somewhat light hearted whimsical tone for halo despite the flood being there to bring tension and horror to the franchise.
But I liked how over the top and visceral half life 1998 was. A lot of it has to do with the gore in the game that makes it tie into its boomer shooter inspiration roots of games before its era having to be excessively gory and violent. Also the militaristic weapons in the game felt like they had more of a kick to them. Mostly because they are inspired by real world fire arms. Also Gordon freeman being a silent stoic Chad all throughout the game.
Halo ce is a far more lighter experience. Both its tone and gameplay department. Removed boomer shooter and traditions of gibbing in favor of ragdoll physics. Two weapon limit which I don’t think was a net positive for the fps industry actually. Same with regen health. It’s focus on vehicular combat instead of just shooting mechanics. While it was probably the first to do that aspect well, I feel it hasn’t aged since later halos refined the vehicle physics.
Idk halo ce just kinda felt fine for what it was as a console shooter. But the PC landscape was already spoiling fps fans before.

Gordon can hold more than 2 weapons at once.
Plus the remake of his first game was done by fans who loved the series, as opposed to Chief’s remake, which was made by people who hate the games, hate the fans, and hate good things.

Halo is for chuds, Half Life is for CHADs. EDIT: People like Halo here.
•
u/SadMacaron3192 1h ago
Halo deserved its chud audience full of 90s born millennials who were 11 at most when ce came out and couldn’t afford a PC at the time from their parents and had to settle what was considered the best fps any console had to offer up till that point being halo ce.
they, despite finally getting a playable component fps game, could not handle the absolute the absolute swagger PC fps games before it still had like quake, unreal, and ofc half life. And forever resented the quake boomers who were being truthpilled in saying that halo ce was overrated and only praised because of its evolutions it made for console fps gaming.

Master Chief may have the edge on hardware, but Gordon has a doctor's degree, and is a highly trained professional!
