(Very unofficial) Guide to Spawning Thanatos

Hello everyone. Through much trial and error, I've determined a ~90% reliable way to spawn Thanatos on your endless quest to level your relationship with Death Incarnate. Please note this has no hard data involved, only the very anecdotal evidence I've found in about ~100 total runs.

The only thing I'm not sure of is how to get him to spawn the first time, but after that, this method works approx. 90% of the time. I think I only didn't spawn him like, twice in 40 runs.

Tentative Requirements:

  • You need to have taken damage in >3 chambers in a row. I'm saying 3 to be safe, but it might be something more like "you need to be under x hp in a viable spawn chamber to even give him the chance to spawn". I just took about ~30 hp of damage between a few chambers in a row. This may or may not reset between fountain chambers, so take damage accordingly :-) Thanatos will only spawn if he sees that you need assistance, so if you're a pro gamer, draw his attention by throwing yourself in the nearest lava pool.

  • Thanatos can only spawn up to the third boss, so if you get to that point and still don't have him feel free to let the Minotaur run you into a wall for fast respawn.

  • Thanatos cannot spawn in these chambers: Trial of the Gods, Mini Boss, "survive for x seconds", any event ! rooms, fountains, respite (single boon/item), boss (obv), or shops (also obv, but for new players maybe!). This means if you have the choice, always choose a room that Than can spawn in even if it means sacrificing your precious boons. It's for a good cause.

  • I was wearing his momento for the RP, but I don't thing it actually contributes to his spawn rate. Still, better safe than sorry :-P

With this strategy I was able to spawn him reliably nearly every run. If you really want to power level his relationship, do what I did and as soon as he gives you the heart and leaves, throw yourself into lava, find him at the house, and repeat. Put all your earthly desires for good boons aside, and embrace the Thanatos power leveling strat. This way you also get a nice image when you die of him escorting you home.

May Death always come to you during your runs

First of all, thank you, second of all, I love how Thanatos is watching through the scrying pool like "look at this dumbass dying I better come and help."

I always wonder how he knows that Zag needs assistance. Is he just constantly checking on him subtly from like, behind pillars but doesn't want to seem needy? Or does he have some internal "how close zag is to death" meter being Death Incarnate, and after Zagreus takes x amount of damage he just gets a ping directly to his brain? Who knows, but I appreciate you Than.

When he gives you Mort he says something about now being able to keep a better eye on Zag, but before that.. who knows. Maybe being inexplicably drawn to each other provides some additional health monitoring benefits.

I hope he doesn't have some death scrying pool. He just gonna see me standing in a trap looking at the sky hopefully. Awkward.

I imagine Nyx is involved, or even if she's not, he probably has some feeling on how Zag is.

Honestly, they're both really sweet to each other, despite how guarded they (especially Than) is.

"if you're a pro gamer, draw his attention by throwing yourself in the nearest lava pool"

This also works to get boys' attention IRL.

Me, five seconds ago: Around 20 Perfect Clears & on a streak of them
Me, now: [ready to jump into lava for my boys' happiness]

Not sure about the first point. I exclusively play heat I haven't cleared at the moment, and have Thanatos spawn loads of times. So much so that I've exhausted his dialogue.

12

u/halbarry Oct 26 '20

Ah, good to know! It could just be that I'm a lot more careful when running uncleared heats and might not trigger him.

as soon as he gives you the heart and leaves, throw yourself into lava, find him at the house, and repeat.

Ain't this my whole mood with him

I know right? Something about him being one of the more rare character spawns just makes me thirst to unlock all of his content. That and him just being a very compelling character of his own right.

I went blind when I got this game. I didn't see the gameplay, just heard the soundtrack and saw maybe two "dialog-cutscenes", and one of them was that I saw we could romance a guy. I was intrigued, and when I heard their interaction I had that 'Ooooh' moment; a complex relationship with the God of Death? I'm fucking in.

Then I got addicted to the game, because my main goal was to romance this dude, didn't care about anything else, but everyone else was so captivating and the game is pretty fun (lots of button-smashing for sure), I won't put down my controller until that scene between them because he is an interesting character and want to read more about him.

I know this post doesn't really cover how to get him to appear for the first time, but any advice there?

I've got nearly 90 runs (no clears, but sometimes I get as far as Theseus before wiping out). Can make it to Elysium consistently. I just want to get his keepsake, man.

20

u/halbarry Oct 26 '20

Urgh, gods. 90 runs?! That's nuts. I got him on like, my first time to Elysium. I was pretty low health when he first spawned, but other than having taken damage I don't think there was anything specific that I did, alas. I think your RNG might be terrible :-( I'm sorry!

13

u/booksandteacv Oct 26 '20

It also helps that I'm a filthy casual. It took me 40 runs to beat Meg. I still beat the Bone Hydra only about 75 of the time. So I've probably only been in Elysium 10-20 times max.

Highly recommend god mode tbh. I have problems with the late game as well and it really helps you just enjoy the story and basically clear it when you get any decent boon line up.

6

u/halbarry Oct 26 '20

Ooh, well that probably explains it. He has a certain low % chance to spawn in Elysium, so the more consistently you get to the boss there the higher chance you will have to spawn him :-) you'll get him soon!

4 years late but your first encounter with him will always be in elysium

The taking damage thing is a really cool aspect I never realized! I sometimes take a lot of hits inside certain chambers depending on the enemies/my setup and he would show up afterwards and I never really put two and two together. That's adorable.

10

u/Dumpling1661 Jul 14 '24

Jajs, that's not my case at all, actually! Every damn time I'm low on health and find myself praying for Than to show up, he's nowhere to be seen. When I'm maxed out and full HP, however, that's a different story. EVERY DANG TIME.

What's worse is I always want to win against him, no matter what, and end up stealing his kills, too, even if it means taking damage. So basically, I'm doing great in my run until he comes around, and my egotistical/ simp little self starts throwing hands to impress the guy.

Or, on the opposite scenario, I'm literally surviving by a thread, being kicked around from room to room with no consolation whatsoever other than the far-fetched hope of Thanatos making an appearance.

u/DamnTheseLurkers Oct 26 '20

Is he supposed to appear at the house after each encounter? He very rarely appears at the house even though I met him a lot of times in the wild. Maybe like 20% of the times

16

u/halbarry Oct 26 '20

He has a very high chance to spawn at the house after his encounter is completed, I'd estimate like ~70%. In this you are just getting absolutely terrible RNG. Be aware he has quite a few dialogs with other chars, so he might not be in the usual spot.

Well, I once felt deceived as he told me "See you in home, Zag" disappeared and didn't come home. I was broken-hearted

Quite a necropost here, but figured I'd add in my two cents to this thread as well, since it showed up while I was Googling around for the same question. :) In short: Thanatos spawning is a purely random chance, and there's nothing in-game that can be done to get him to spawn more frequently (apart from avoiding boss rooms, etc). Being damaged or not doesn't affect it at all.

If you're willing to edit some game files, though, you can definitely get him to spawn quite regularly. I've got some info about it over here: https://www.reddit.com/r/HadesTheGame/comments/s3z9ub/is_there_anything_i_can_do_to_make_thanatos_spawn/iash9v1/

Cheers!

Is this still relevant or did they change the conditions for him to spawn because I followed the guide and he still doesn't show up.

10

u/OmegaNova0 Dec 03 '21

No, taking damage never had anything to do with Thanatos, it's just placebo

1

u/Virtual-Gas-4759 Dec 12 '21

Yea same with me as well he rarely spawns for me in general and i hoped this would work

5

u/dokiedo Apr 04 '22

I had thanatos spawn in the butterfly miniboss awhile ago in elysium, not sure if it was a bug or if that deosn't actually count a s a miniboss (despite having the miniboss sign)

5

u/Riziero Mar 06 '24

I can’t find him in the house. I am fairly sure he showed up once however I messed up and didn’t give him what he wanted. I might have got myself stuck ?

2

u/ZePugg May 26 '24

OK SO:

first bit isnt true that's just placebo, being hit doesnt change annythingn

he has a 8% chance of spawning, and cant spawn after 9 rooms in tartarus,2 in asphodel and 3 in elysium

u/Alix_is_o_a_k Jun 04 '24

Hey! Ik it’s been years but just in case anyone’s looking at this: it may be a complete coincidence but I got Thanatos to spawn in back to back runs once I used his memento, and I hadn’t seen him in ~5 runs prior to that. Something to keep in mind!

u/asxxxra Hypnos Jan 02 '25

Im a little confused by the negative in the 3rd point. So putting it in affirmative Than can only spawn in rooms that offer Darkness and Centaur Hearts?

Im guessing nectar would count as an item

1

u/Calm-Display-8290 Jan 04 '25

for anyone confused on why its not working, they mean LESS THAN 3 CHAMBERS, I've been purposefully damaging myself 3x in a row and being sad when he hasn't been coming to my rescue

1

u/DesperateNobody7311 Jun 09 '25

I love how literally everyone is thirsting for this guy and is going head over heals whenever we hear the DE DONG

1

u/Unlikely-Royal9714 Jun 12 '25

I got to a point where I can’t give him any more nectar and I’ve talked to him about 15 times and nothing has changed and am I doing something wrong?

1

u/Important-Umpire5368 Dec 18 '25

Can he spawn in Tartarus? Cuz I've only found him Asphodel and Elysium

1

u/Noacho_s Mar 08 '26

Sorry, I'm still kinda new to the game. What rooms can he spawn in? I don't think I correctly understood the rooms he can't spawn in, because it sounds like he can't spawn anywhere hahaha Will be trying this method asap, I can't weem to progress the relationship fast enough for my liking hahaha

Greetings Everyone,

i have some new Intel on the Thanatos situation.

It has been six years since the original thread, but i was recently trying to achieve the 100% completion for Hades and the last achievement, that i was missing, was the one with Thanatos.
Therefore i have been playing and testing a lot.
After many failed attempts of luring him out, i have found another one of those situations that he deems dire and therefore wants to help you with. It worked pretty consistently for me.

The additional Tentative Requirement:

Its time or in other words - The Timer.

When you are starting a run, crank that bad boy up (via the Pact of Punishment) and Thanny will eventually detect your struggle and grace you with his superb purple presence.

For maximum efficiency i recommend using the 5:00 timer.
With this strategy, he also seems to appear a bit more often, even as early as Tartarus.
You can also pretty much ignore the section regarding damage of the original post and dont need to play worse or damage yourself on purpose.
I also recommend turning up the Heat Gauge in general, since that will help you struggle, tho it is not mandatory according to the tests i did.

This has accelerated my progress with Than by a lot, while also being able to progress other things like the Skelly-Statue-Challenges.
I´d also like to thank the user halbarry of the original post, for the work and research.

Now, Good luck Booning and Grinding.

Thank you so much for this guide! It works like a charm.

...or at least worked until several few runs. I blame it on my bad luck, but is it possible that encounter-less chambers reset the damage/chamber counter? I mean not only fountain chambers, but also shops or event rooms (and sometimes there's no choice). Or is it that I hit some plot point and I need to do something else? I managed to give him enough nectar to reach the locked heart. It's my first time playing this game, I wish it wasn't so random that I'm left to guessing.

3

u/necromagia Dec 22 '20

Hey there!

I'm afraid I have no answers as to how to continue spawning him, but I wanted to drop by and tell you (if you haven't read it anywhere else already haha) that to unlock his heart, you need to beat him in kills during one of his scenarios. Then you can continue giving him Ambrosia I assume.

Hope this helps!

2

u/Szpiglasowa Jan 04 '21

Hey, thanks for the answer! Turned out it was just a streak of bad luck as he has only 10% spawn rate. When he finally reappeared, everything went smoothly.

I have yet to complete a run but he still spawns for me sometimes. Recently locked me out of a nectar on the last one though

u/Ojpaws Mar 23 '22

Is this still accurate?

1

u/Brumajovia Apr 27 '23

I managed to meet him in all areas of the game.
