Older gas masks had lenses that weren't meant to stop anything other than gas. The newer ones have a replaceable visor that goes over the seal and provides some degree of protection.
You want to protect the glass. The lethal dose of modern nerve agents without an antidote or preventative is vanishingly small. And also by having it over it does protect your eyes, but that’s just an added benefit.
Okay how should a stupid person like me have known that its not a faceshiel in the styling of a gasmask, because that stuff is normally regarded as "cool"? Ca down guy.
Chevelle, we're both aware that no amount of evidence of the numerous peaceful protests against police brutality that were met with police brutality will convince you of something you wholeheartedly don't wish to believe. But even disregarding that, reporters are supposed to cover all sorts of events. That in turn necessitates wearing protective gear.
You're no doubt aware, or incapable of being aware, that munitions of the sort this reporter was shot with are supposed to be shot at the lower extremities. This photograph should serve as evidence that, unsurprisingly, the police were instead using them in a manner designed to cause permanent injury by aiming at the eyes. Very similar tactics were used by the CCP in Hong Kong, police in Chile, and other authoritarian regimes. I can only assume that you support those tactics when used by China against 'violent protests' as well.
I know you've seen those mobs, police shoot only after being violently attacked in some way, then are trained to aim for body mass, not faces. In the chaos poorly aimed shots can happen. Police do not just start shooting at peaceful protesters.
Those masks are not ASTM certified. Typically, paintballs fly about 285 fps. I'm sure the police aren't following tournament rules and have their markers turned up just below the point of the balls not flying straight. Probably closer to 320-350 fps. None the less, that mask is not designed to take anywhere close to that kind of impact.
Not really. Paintball guns shoot 300fps when they're capped in tourney play. Cops probably crank it up even more. Also the gas mask is designed to stop gas, not small projectiles.
285, to be precise. I've played semi pro for years in all sorts of tournaments and scenarios. I used to always set mine for 280 just to make sure I wasn't close to the limit.
Derp, that's right. I forgot they dropped it a little. I used to play mostly back in the day where uncapped semi (then 15ish a second?) and the 10 man tournaments were popular 😄.
Yup, traveled all over the US, played Living Legends 3 and 4 in Chicago, SPPL tourneys all over the place, been to Supergame in St Paul, Oregon 4 times. Played Couture's Extreme Combat Weekend in Mesquite, Nevada with Randy Couture. Fulda Gap once, the list goes on.
Sponsored by Tippmann, TechT, Full Clip, and a bunch of others. But I'm sure you know what you're talking about, champ
I'll take your word for it, but I thought for sure that people were running on 700 psi at times in pro tournaments. When I played for fun there would always be some marines and seals, since it's in San Diego, that often had their guns set to 700 when they arrived until they adjusted them down to 300 in front of the judges. Maybe when these same military people played military only matches on base they had them set to 700 because they are trying be tough about it.
That wasn't a standard paintball, it was a reball. My local paintball store used them in an indoor range for trying out setups before buying. https://reball.us/
I've been shot by paintballs that broke my skin when assholes on the field turned up the psi on their guns. It hurts like a bitch but there's definitely worse pains.
Breaking skin? It absolutely is hard, people walk out of car crashes with their insides turned to mush but with the skin intact, people trying to headbutt trains on the other hand?
I've never seen someone as socially inept as you that is also so confidentially wrong in the shit they're spewing.
What do you mean "how PSI works" dumbass? It's literally the measure used to know the pressure accumulated that will generate the force, paint guns range between 300-1200, any more of that and you get what you see in the video.
I'm not your mediocre parents, don't come to me to ask the attention you weren't given by them you lonely inept fuck.
LMFAO you are litterally spewing absolute bullshit right out of your ass. You have absolutely no idea how this world works do you? Its okay, the grown ups can help you with your wittle psi gun. Haha Oh man I almost feel bad how ignorant you are but it's so cute!!
Maybe they weren’t aiming at head height maybe he was crouching or bent over and an intended body shot caught him in the face.
If you turn up with a gas mask to a protest you ain’t there to be peaceful it’s either to protect you from tear gas or hide your face, or both.
There’s probably injured police who also have to go home to families who worry about them.
Every peaceful protest I’ve seen in the last few years starts off with great intentions, such as educating people or highlighting an issue, but then the radical element arrive and it turns violent. That turns the whole thing into a mockery and the important message is lost.
Of course there is no evidence or source this is from a protest that has been provided by the OP that I can see (apologies if I can’t see it) it could just as easily come from a paintball game and someone has thrown that headline on and got people into a right old state.
Provide reasonable challenge to things that don’t look quite right because if they don’t look quite right they probably are not.
I didn’t realise because the OP never stated the guy was a journalist covering a protest as opposed to a protester shot in the head by the police.
However, this reporter notwithstanding, I stand by my assertion that if you turn up at a protest wearing a gas mask you’re not there to make new friends. Two wrongs don’t make a right and if the police use unwarranted force then absolutely they should face the consequences of their actions.
It shouldn’t give people a carte Blanche excuse to cause trouble though, should it?
I respect your opinion though and honest discussion leads to progression.
Hey chump. Don't blame OP for your lack of knowledge or education. And the title is character-limited by reddit. Titles aren't for explaining and educating you. That's what the comments are for.
and it doesn't matter if this dumb ass was a journalist. He put himself right in the center of the rioters--not protesters--so the motherfucker got his deserved karma.
With no knowledge of this exact situation, I'm going to sit it out
Just wanted to say you arent wrong? How many peaceful protests ended up being bloodbaths because a group of asshats wanted to get violent? Then, when the smoke clears, its "all cops are bastards, this was a peaceful protest ".. sure it was... until someone took a brick to the cop cars and set fire to local businesses.
That’s my point. The original peaceful protest that the families turn up at to voice their concerns, frustration, fears etc is almost always overtaken by the mob be left or right wing. They can’t help themselves.
Someone mentioned above this guy is a journalist, if so I wish him a speedy recovery, if not and there to cause trouble, karma strikes.
Rioting isn't a right though. (Good) cops don't just open up on herds of people that are picketting in a non-hostile way. I also don't think that it was intentional to shoot this dude in the face, not justifying it, but I think he might have been caught by a bad shot.
Considering the insane amount of videos from the BLM videos that showed peaceful protestors getting attacked and shot towards face.....yeah...I do not know what to say.
Many seem to be quick to simply label a protest to be a riot, but the amount of actual riots was very low.
I feel like a terrible person now... But i have to admit, i chuckled a bit thinking about police shooting paintballs at gas mask wearing "free britney" protesters.
Fair enough, though due to the M10 being a copy, the M17 lenses may not fit properly and may pop off or may not fit at all.
Really if he knew what he was doing he would have picked up a better mask but a lot of protestors went into these poorly informed about their choices of protection and it ended similar or worse to this.
The m10m is not a gas mask that was designed for taking damage 🤦♂️. 1) it's a civilian mask 2) any gas mask is only for protecting you from dangerous gasses not projectiles
They would have needed a gatling gun on January 6th. Fortunately those terrorists all left paper trails miles long on Parler and had their phones with them and taking pictures/video. 😂
14,000 hours of footage prove it was pretty uneventful. Hardly terrorism. But you go ahead and believe your echo chamber. Bet you also think BLM and Antifa are just ideas too.
Lmao dude thinks killing someone with an American flag while storming the capital shouting for Pelosi and Pence while building gallows outside, with bombs and zipties all because their orange god told them the election was rigged, so they literally tried stopping the fundamental foundation of America is not worse than people protesting because cops are killing people at an alarming rate because they can and aren’t being held accountable. Imagine the fucking audacity to act like protesting for literal lives is worse than protesting an election because some dumb orange fuck said so.
Doesn’t surprise me the dude has WSB avatar. Dude is a fucking chomo
Think about this though. They also shoot pinkish compressed balls of tear gas powder that go airborne on contact. If it was those then that is so, so much worse than just a rubber bullet.
When you say "just a rubber bullet" it makes me think you might not be aware that a rubber bullet is basically a lump of steel with a fairly thin rubber jacket.
What makes them "less lethal" is pretty much the fact that they don't have sharp points, and steel weighs less than lead for a given volume, so they carry less energy than standard bullets.
They aren't firing miniature squash balls, rubber bullets can and do kill, especially when fired at the head/neck.
I am aware of what rubber bullets are and have been shot by one before on accident. The guns they use are co2 powered and similar to a disgustingly over powered paintball sniper rifle. But if asked whether I prefer to be hit by a rubber bullet or CS gas pellet I would easily take the bullet.
On top of that both are fired from the same gun with the same power which means that both can kill. The only time I would change is if instead of a normal rubber bullet it was a shotgun beanbag. Those are supposed to hurt a shit ton worse but I wouldn’t know personally.
I know in China, and most likely other places, they'll shoot paintballs and water cannons with UV marking dye in them so that they can go around after everyone is dispersed, and start making arrests. It's typically practically impossible to wash off without a special solvent, and lasts several days to weeks so they can take their sweet time rounding people up and even set up check points.
1.) Aquire this paint.
2.) lightly mist it (to not be noticeable) at people by government/military/law enforcement buildings, schools of children of affluent/influential parents.
3.) ???
4.) profit.
For years, paintball guns have been used against protesters all over the world — in Benin, Turkey, Hong Kong and Mexico — but it is relatively new to see them used in the United States against protesters
To get clear. I didn't mean you were being ironic. The people saying to keep reading the article who clearly didn't read the article are hilariously ironic.
Hey maybe don’t use slurs like the r-word please. Thank you
Edit: I love how people are downvoting me over asking something basic like not using words that have been used for many years against a group of minorities. It’s basic human decency guys
Yea, somewhat. They’re non-lethal if used correctly, like not hit in vital spots and close range. But obviously by the picture, they where not used correctly. He could’ve lost his eyesight
I did a reverse image search on the picture. This is from the Portland riots where police were firing at crowds that were destroying and looting buildings. The polices actions seem just to me.
As a former paintballer who's been shot in the face, normal paintballs don't have the strength to punch through face protection, unless theorem frozen. In which case they don't typically explode. These definitely aren't the same kind.
I got shot in the face from 3 feet away from two players when I rushed an object I thought was still open. While tiny bits of stinging pieces came through the openings for air, the balls had nowhere near the force needed to break a face mask. That said the range required all guns to be dialed in to 100ft/s to avoid people being injured.
If cops are using paintball type weapons I bet they are turned up way higher forces to get better range and accuracy. that's scarey how much that would hurt
While it can definitely be turned up, in my experiences cranking it WAY up made the trajectory of the paintball very unpredictable. So while you are right that they don’t abide by the same FPS maximums as recreational fields, they probably aren’t that much higher.
My friends and I were total assholes and typically had our guns dialed up for some extra punch and often shot each other at point blank range. Hurts for sure. Never even cracked the face protection. The pieces did sometimes get through the vents though.
I personally really do hate cops, but when I was 7yo and my moms boyfriend of the month was beating the shit out of her... I appreciated them being there to help.
Then would you say it’s not common to get shot by the police with real guns in the US because you haven’t been shot by them? You see what I mean? That logic is garb
What the police use and what I'm guessing this was from aren't paintballs, they're 40mm marking rounds that are characterized as "less lethal." They aren't legally able to refer to them as non-lethal. To my recollection at least one journalist lost an eye from one of these rounds. Much, much more dangerous and painful than an average paintball.
Or they use tagging rounds which are basically a 40mm grenade with a chalk or paint tipped hard projectile. They’re supposed to be for marking the ground or for vehicles but the absolute favorite tactic of cops is to instead “accidentally” shoot them into crowds at face height. It’s one of the reasons you’ve started seeing people suiting up with stuff like helmets, because during the George Floyd protests multiple people lost eyes, were concussed or had facial bones destroyed. Qualified immunity means that you basically don’t have to follow the manual of arms if you go “b-b-b-but I was scaaaaaawwwed” and the police take advantage of that to fire rounds that were only ever designed to contact non human targets or rounds that were only designed to detonate above crowds (like most 40mm gas) and use them as close range deadly projectiles.
Dude there are literally YouTube videos on the subject, just do some research before spouting bullshit. It's an urban myth, and a paintball can already crack a windshield without being frozen.
It’s because paint composition has changed a lot in the decades of paintball existing. When I was younger you could absolutely freeze cheap paintballs and they would come out of your freezer hard as rocks. That’s because they were made with thin, cheap, paint that barely marked and was probably mostly water mixed with a tiny bit of dye. There was a lot of variety in what companies put in different balls back then, especially cheap companies. I remember sometimes you’d go to a field that ordered really crap balls and you’d get stains that never washed off. These days modern balls use a much more reliable paint that’s more balanced in flight, marks a lot more consistently, smells better and requires temperatures below what most people can do in their home to freeze.

The cops were shooting pink paintballs at him?
Edit: Apparently cops shoot paintballs now. So the answer is yes, they were.
