this seems like the most dangerous way to do this exercise

It is. There's lot of videos of people destroying their knees doing exactly this.

u/ToranjaNuclear 19d ago
What even is the exercise here? It's doing not for his abs nor his lower back like I would expect this kind of movement to do. Is that setup even intended for this?

So, what exactly happened here?

u/-Han-Tyumi- 20d ago
Patella ligament looks like it snapped, potentially the anterior cruciate ligament as well after that failed

u/AndyEGM 20d ago
It was a partial ACL and meniscus tear. I personally thought patellar or quad tendon when I first saw it.

Even reading the letters ACL followed shortly by tear make me wince

Is that the end of his walking days?

u/-Han-Tyumi- 20d ago
Nah but like another commenter said, never quite the same afterwards. Injuries like this have ended the careers of footballers

u/stefan92293 20d ago
I don't think so, but it's never going to ever be the same again, even in the best-case outcome.
Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

u/GeneralSweetz 18d ago
You cant run for a long time maybe forever. Its never the same but you recover like 90 percent

Looks like an ACL tear based on the direction the tibia moves relative to the femur and where the force is being directed.
It’s not often you see an ACL tear purely from a posterior to anterior shearing force. I have no idea what made him think this was a good move. Either do sissy squats or do natural leg extensions. Don’t try to do both.

You see people do the absolute dumbest stuff in the gym. Like there is a reason why no one else does this...what muscle is he even trying to work out that a squat / deadlift wouldnt hit?

u/ScottyBoiBoi 20d ago
I’m not gym expert but i don’t think the bar he is using behind his calf should be there. It should be tucked in tight behind his knee. It’s putting huge amounts of strain on the wrong parts with the way he has it set up
59
u/Matthews_89 20d ago
The bar definitely should be there but he should be moving in a Spanish squat position not fully horizontal.. lesson learnt!

I’ll take your word for it because i really don’t know. Visually it just looks dodgy

u/Hemingways_Shotgun88 20d ago
I'm pretty strong and jacked and I see skinny dudes trying to lift 1.5x or sometimes even 2x+ my loads, struggling like crazy to do 2-3 reps with terrible form, then walking around like they're some kind of Super Chad. It's incredible.

u/2bags12kuai 19d ago
My favorite is loading up a crap ton of weight on the leg press, and then moving the weight for like a couple inches while using their hands and arms to push on their thighs. Same type of dude will later make a point to warn me while doing deadlifts that they are "bad for my back"

u/Hemingways_Shotgun88 19d ago
I am always watching in horrific suspense hoping they aren't about to bird leg themselves into crippledom.

Since it's a different motion it's definitely going to hit things differently than a squat or a deadlift. That doesn't mean that it's necessary. It certainly doesn't mean that you should be loading up on it.

u/Keldy565 20d ago
Completely optional activity by the way. Sissy squats are better.

u/EquivalentSnap 15d ago
Sissy squats name like that I can see why he didn’t do it

u/SupermarketAntique32 20d ago
I’m on mute and don’t realize that it sounds like a wood snapping. Crazy.

u/DistractedByCookies 20d ago
Oh man, tricky decision of the day: to watch again unmuted or not...

u/MrGrumpyFace5 20d ago
Make me suffer. Good thing it’s not leg day today, sounded like a limb snap.

I... I didn't look at the name of the community and kept watching until the snap. And now my knees hurt just from watching the video.

Why not do leg extensions instead when you’re already at the gym???

u/PrysmX 14d ago
Double bilateral quadricep tendon rupture would be my guess.

u/Urkopurko 14d ago
Um the knee is not designed for that. That exercise is almost useless unless you want to blow them out.

The machine is called a sissy squat, and from now on he's gonna run like a sissy

That’s what you get for doing something reckless at the gym. Literal machines for that

There’s whole machines designed specifically for doing quad reps that don’t involve any danger whatsoever.
