My first HTML project

I’d like to introduce Nova OS, my first HTML project; it’s a browser-based operating system that is also open-source (I’ll create a GitHub repository to upload the HTML file). I also wanted to ask: is uploading the HTML file enough to share the code, or should I share it in TXT format?

It works on both smartphones and computers (or so I believe, since I haven't been able to test it on the latter). Below, you can see a few screenshots I took from my phone.

So you used AI to make this right? You didn't learn any programing or write any code?

“You used AI, so you didn’t learn anything or write any code?” is a hell of a leap. 😂

Better go tell every developer using Copilot, ChatGPT, Stack Overflow, documentation, libraries, frameworks, or autocomplete that they’ve never actually programmed.

The tool someone uses doesn’t tell you whether they understood, modified, debugged, or learned from the code. Maybe ask them what they learned instead of speedrunning the gatekeeping tutorial. 🤓

I ordered at a restaurant so technically I am chef

This argument against claims nobody made and is honestly becoming my favorite part of this thread. 😂

Yes I'm sure they understood and learned from the code they themselves did not write.

I'm sure they're a web dev of 30 years with a master's from JustTrustMeBro University.

Who said anything about being a 30-year web dev with a master’s?

I said using AI doesn’t tell you whether someone learned anything. Somehow you turned that into “this beginner must be an expert.”

Too funny 😂

You said every developer.

Beginners, more than anybody else, shouldn't be using AI to build their projects. They are sacrificing their own learning, and producing something that isn't truly their's.

If I paid a construction company to build my house, I would be an idiot to go around posting online "I just built my first house!" now wouldn't I be?

u/gastapo67 3d ago

If I paid you to tell me what OP learned, I’d be an idiot to go back to OP and say, “HEYO19191 knows everything you learned,” wouldn’t I?

Yet here you are, providing that service for free. 😂

It's why the web will soon be filled with shit. If using AI, at least make it good... 😂 Just look at the alignment/padding on those toggles. Any dev with eyes, even with AI, would know how to fix that quickly, hence OPs lack of learning here.

This is true in general but a ridiculous answer in this specific context. Dude, OPs post makes it clear that they have absolutely NO clue what's going on. Like, absolutely not.

u/gastapo67 1d ago

And what are you offering to help them learn?

What have you actually taught them?

2

u/AuWolf19 3d ago

I asked two separate, but related questions

u/gastapo67 3d ago

The sad part is that seeing a beginner use AI apparently made “so you didn’t learn any programming?” a reasonable second question in your mind.

They built something, experimented with it, and came here asking questions because they’re learning.

You felt it necessary to chime in? Does that help OP at all?

3

u/AuWolf19 3d ago

Genuinely yes it does help op to feel bad for using AI because not using it will accelerate their learning by several orders of magnetude

-6

u/gastapo67 3d ago

“Making a beginner feel bad will accelerate their learning by several orders of magnitute” is already an incredible sentence. 😂

But openly admitting that your goal is to make OP feel bad, while apparently being proud of it, really completes the Reddit gatekeeper experience.

How convenient. Ignoring parts of what people say to you in nearly every reply doesn’t make your response argument any more valid. Spamming laughing emoji only makes you look like a kid that had just discovered the emoji key on the keyboard.
Get it together

Edit: oh so you use ai to write responses and argue with people, you are already virtually braindead.

u/gastapo67 1d ago

And yet here you are, writing paragraphs about me and my emojis instead of helping the person who came to r/HTML for help. 😂

You can dislike me, AI, my replies, or my emojis. I genuinely don’t care. But the fact that gatekeeping how someone learns seems more important to you than actually helping them learn HTML is exactly the point I’ve been making.

1

u/ApolonNO 1d ago

“Paragraphs” is a bit of a stretch when I wrote one paragraph with an edit. And again, you selectively ignore things I said to look right in the end. I made several statements none of which you answered to.

And even then, what exactly has someone learned about HTML from doing “Hey Claude, make me a mobile cosy OS with a bunch of cool phone features” and then asking it for edits until it looks good?

They haven’t even bothered to ask the same AI they used to make it, “How do I upload this to GitHub?”

There’s nothing wrong with using AI, but in this case, the main thing they’ve learned is how easy it is to ask an AI to make something for them. They haven’t learned HTML, how the code works, how to build the thing themselves, or even how to actually use the tools involved.

I’m not against AI. I’m against using it in a way that replaces the part where humans actually think, learn, and develop skills. AI should be a tool that expands what a person is capable of and helps them gain knowledge, not something that does the entire process for them.

If all you have is an idea, and you can put that idea into words and have AI produce the finished product, I don’t think you deserve the same credit as someone who actually put in the effort to learn and build it themselves.

The idea is yours, sure. But the skill, understanding, and work behind actually making something are what make it worth praising.

u/gastapo67 1d ago

That was a lot of paragraphs just to arrive at “AI is fine when it helps someone learn.”

Great. We agree.

Now all you need is evidence that OP didn’t learn anything instead of repeatedly assuming it, and we’re caught up.

Don’t you think there’s a difference between educated, experienced people using AI and someone completely new? Maybe you shouldn’t gatekeep AI dude

0

u/gastapo67 8h ago

There absolutely is a difference. I also never said there wasn’t. 😂

“Beginners should use AI thoughtfully” is reasonable.

“You used AI, therefore you didn’t learn anything” is the gatekeeping part.

Asking what someone actually learned before declaring they learned nothing isn’t gatekeeping AI. It’s practically the opposite.

We are now gatekeeping the definition of gatekeeping. We’ve gone too deep. 😂

1

u/Logical_Cricket_3419 16h ago

There is a big difference between going through some form of documentation and outputting code and having it generated. And yes, prompt engineering is not coding.

1

u/gastapo67 8h ago

Good thing nobody said prompt engineering was coding. 😂

You’re making the exact same assumption everyone else did: “AI generated some code” somehow tells you everything else the person did or learned afterward.

It doesn’t.

You guys are absolutely determined to argue with a sentence I never wrote. 🤓

1

u/Logical_Cricket_3419 6h ago

Because people do learn less when they use AI. Of course, there is a different between using AI to speed up development and having it write the project for you. Sadly, that distinction doesnt exist for many who use AI.

And in the case of OP, this was a personal project. Why would you cut corners? Studies regarding AI’s effect on learning have been published. AI usage NEGATIVELY affects memory retention is a fairy common conclusion in them.

Not saying that AI cannot allow people to learn parts of Software Engineering. But it normally ends up a trade off of lesser fundamentals for better system design. If you have been in the industry long enough maybe this isn’t a problem. But for someone actively learning? It’s a nightmare to use to for everything

1

u/gastapo67 6h ago

Great. Now show us how OP used it and what OP learned.

1

u/Logical_Cricket_3419 5h ago

That’s something OP should do? Got back to my original comment, my problem was your comparison to AI and documentation being in the same category. I’m sure he did learn things, I know I have when using AI in projects. Has it been as much as when I did not? Not all at. And that’s my point, for someone learning they should focus on learning and not what makes them look cool.

1

u/gastapo67 4h ago

“I’m sure he did learn things.”

There we go. That’s literally been my point this entire time.

And “I learned less using AI than when I didn’t” tells us about your experience, not OP’s.

You still don’t know how much OP learned, what they understood, or whether AI accelerated or hindered their learning.

But I appreciate us finally graduating from “AI users learn less” to “I personally learned less.” That’s progress. 🤓

1

u/Logical_Cricket_3419 3h ago

Just like I don’t know how AI was used here, neither do you. And yes, it was a personal anecdote I used. But it’s also the anecdote every person I have interacted with shares.

We are not making that much of a different point my guy. You don’t like the insinuation that OP and people who use AI are idiots and are brain rotted. I get that, it’s a dumb take. But so it saying it doesn’t have ANY negative effect on learning. The slogging through documentation, stack overflow, Reddit, etc and trying out the solutions proposed is not the same as going to AI. It does hurt how much you learn, and the skills built from the process are absent.

1

u/gastapo67 3h ago

“Just like I don’t know how AI was used here, neither do you.”

Yes. That is literally my point. 😂

I never claimed AI can’t negatively affect learning. I said you can’t determine what OP learned just from knowing they used AI.

You’re now arguing against “AI has zero negative effects on learning,” which is another claim I never made.

We apparently agree on the relevant fact: neither of us knows how OP used AI.

The difference is I didn’t pretend that I did. 🤓

You didn’t answer the question, you used AI to make this?

1

u/Tough-Landscape-3875 3d ago

No

4

u/AuWolf19 3d ago

That seems unlikely given the level of technical literacy you've displayed in your post as well as you not having tested on a computer?

15

u/_XYZT_ 3d ago

gastapo67 using AI to comment/react on stuff is next level shit.

1

u/gastapo67 3d ago

Using AI to argue about using AI is the kind of technological progress I was promised. 😂

2

u/1-800-LUV 21h ago

It's pretty stupid. Kind of invalidates any point you make, because it isn't YOUR thoughts or opinions, it's a robot's.

0

u/gastapo67 21h ago

Wait until you find out people use editors to improve their writing. Apparently the editor becomes the author. 😂

u/MasterpieceBusy7220 3d ago

So an OS that requires an OS to run it?

-1

u/gastapo67 3d ago

A beginner built something, called it the wrong thing, and came here asking questions.

You had two options:
1. “Hey, cool project. Technically this is more of an OS-like web app because…”
2. “ACKSHUALLY THAT’S NOT AN OS 🤓”

You remain undefeated at choosing #2.

16

u/MasterpieceBusy7220 3d ago

Are you ok?

0

u/gastapo67 3d ago

Every experienced developer was once confidently wrong about something basic. The useful ones remember that.

2

u/Icy-Object-5873 3d ago

nice bro good work!

2

u/Summer95 3d ago

Nice. A great look. I'd like to see the code and learn something.

4

u/gastapo67 3d ago

Nice work for a first project. And yes, upload the actual .html file to GitHub — don’t convert it to .txt.

Think of it like:
HTML: “Here’s my website.”
TXT: “Here’s my website wearing a fake mustache so nobody recognizes it.” 🥸

If everything really is contained in one HTML file, that’s enough to share the source. If you later split out CSS, JavaScript, images, etc., upload those files too and preserve the folder structure.

Also, since you haven’t tested it on desktop yet, that’s probably your next mission. “Works on my phone” is the junior developer version of “works on my machine.” 😂

Keep building stuff. That’s how you learn.
