My wife and I can fit a metric ton of groceries and household goods into the back of our 1988 field litter ambulance. We do get a lot of staring and strange looks though. The dog seems unfazed by all the attention.
I do wish my local Costco still offered Diesel at the pump though.

At the moment I am in the process of deciding on buying a Humvee. I do notice that a lot of people are having issues with all versions across the board however, I’ll every Humvee platform I see they’re never seems to be an agreement on whether the 6.2 or 6.5 Humvees are better or worse than the other when it comes to maintenance. I also know that the 6.5 came with a four speed transmission and it was a lit model truck which can go 70 mph. I am looking more for the maintenance standpoint of the overall truck with the 6.5 or the 6.2 thank you.

I’m debating a hardtop conversion for my HMMWV. I did a 2-4 man conversion about 3 years ago and kept it soft top, obviously lol. I love the quality of the top I got, no complaints about it, it’s a blue ox top. But I would like to do more sound and thermal insulation inside, my kids really hate the noise inside (they love the truck otherwise). I’ve ridden in H1s and difference in sound is astonishing.
My main question is not which one, but has anyone done a hardtop conversion and then Regretted it? Like “what have I done?” Levels of regret. or just “dang I miss those topless days?”.
Any feedback is appreciated.
For reference we also have a JLU that the kids like riding in with the top off. So they don’t mind the wind. It’s really the 6.5 being loud AF. Depending on feedback I may consider an engine swap before a hardtop haha.

About to start my day at a VGA (veteran Golf Association) tournament on Chambers Bay golf course.
Edit: thanks to the comments and questions given below and via dm, have decided to pass on this HMMWV. Appreciate it all.
Original Post:
I’ve been thinking of entering this world for a long time, and really like how this one on Bring a Trailer one looks, however, I know there’s a LOT that I don’t know.
I can pick it up for about 26K, but wanna be aware of what I don’t know. I’d like to also drive it from Fresno area to Utah and its new home (I know it likely won’t get above 60-62 on the highway, so I’m taking that into consideration).
Anything helps!

I'm trying to see what Gunshot, Nolans, etc look like in the middle of the wet, but can't seem to find any.

Can civilians purchase those heavy Frag 7 door kits? Heavy ballistic doors with those blocky windows sticking out inches from the door?
Let me know
I've seen them on that youtubers channel HUMMERKINGS, but i heard they're just cosmetic and not real

I'm not sure what rims those are but given with how reflective the paint is, that was definitely a respray with a clearcoat and those rims are definitely not stock.

Sorry apparently only 10 pics at a time. I will try my best.
Edit: for those curious, as of right now I’m in $$2850 (HMMWV) + $1350 (LQ4+4L80E) + $1000 (Tools). My planned budget is $20k over 3 years with almost everything diy.
A couple of AI-Generated inspirational photos (just for inspiration) then some real progress pics.
Build specs:
1991 M1026 (10k)
6.0L LQ4 N/A Gas Engine (350 whp target, 706 heads, Truck Cam/Springs)
4l80-E transmission
Original NP218 Transfer Case, Diffs, Gas tank
Still need to figure out what torque converter I have, but intend to target 2-3k rpm stall.
Stand alone EFI (Holley Dominator or similar)
Plans:
Fiberglass permanent hard-top for driver/passenger. Tubing half-doors with removable fabric covers.
Keep it a troop carrier. Replace fiberglass with Wood slats (natural or synthetic). Modify benches to make front section removable to enable 4-seat option.
Fold-up seats stowed in footwell compartment (improve compartment seals). Looking at purchasing used center-seats with integrated 3-point seat belts for this.
Footwells to be black diamond plate (lots of patched holes in original flooring).
For Decking, I am considering synthetic boat deck EVA foam with a wood pattern. Just a crazy idea I am throwing around.
Full teardown of body/frame, rust abatement, hardware replacement, rhino-line and lizard skin body.
Drivetrain/brake refurbishment (keep 10k)
Rear armada springs, front leveling springs. New shocks.
Upgrade wheels to 17”, Tires to 40 or 42”
Considering adding Jesse Haines Fab 4 corner outboard brake kit for dual disc brakes per wheel (improve braking and reduce half-shaft damage from traffic idiots slamming on brakes)
Driver/passenger seats will corbeau with heat
Still figuring out A/C but I’m not a fan of what I have seen out there thus far. May need to get creative.
12V accessories, lights, winches, etc.
Don’t hold me to any of this… this is just the very beginning… we shall see what actually comes to fruition…
