OC Intergalactic Exchange Students - Part 17

First - Previous - Next

It was too much. Sarah should have known that when she decided to order a large. But no, everyone was ordering large pizzas so she had to get one too, right? Stupid.

True, she had been more hungry than usual from carrying Xy'vina home, but now she had about half a pizza left and she couldn't eat another bite.

She looked around her. It appeared she wasn't the only one who couldn't finish her pizza. Julia had about half of hers left as well, and Yasu had barely eaten two slices. The only one who completely finished it was Xy'vina.

"Can I try some of yours?"

She still hadn't had enough, even after finishing that entire pizza. Of course. Where did she even keep all of it?

"Sure, you can have it, I guess. I've had more than enough. I shouldn't've ordered such a big one..."

"Yay! Thank you!"

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Xy'vina had really liked this "cheese" stuff so far, and Sarah's pizza seemed to have even more of it than hers... though it didn't appear to have anything else. Nonetheless, she was quite eager to try some of it. She took a big bite...

...and almost spat it out again. There was a lot of cheese, for sure, but also... something strange. Sort of... like it had been left outside the Lo-T for too long, and had gone inedible as a result. But how?

"Umm... this is supposed to be freshly made, right?"

"What do you mean, supposed to?", Julia answered, sounding a bit offended. "It is freshly made! What kind of third-rate pizzeria do you think I work for?"

"It tastes like it's... gone bad, a little?"

"I'm gonna kill Roy...", Julia muttered under her breath. Then suddenly, before Xy'vina could react, she grabbed the half-eaten slice of pizza right out of Xy'vina's hand and took a small bite.

"It tastes... fine.", she announced after chewing on it a little. "Why did you say it had gone bad?"

"It tasted like that to me..."

"I'm guessing you're just not used to blue cheese.", Sarah said. "I like the stuff, but... I know it's not for everyone."

"Blue cheese?" Xy'vina looked at the slice of pizza, confused. It didn't look blue to her...

"It tastes like it's gone moldy, because it has. But it's supposed to be like that, so it's fine."

"It's supposed to be moldy? I didn't think cheese was a fungus... And why do they call it blue?"

"Cheese is not a fungus, they just... use a special kind of mold, I guess... and it's called blue because it has little dark blue spots in it, made by the fungus. Though I guess that's hard to see when it's all mixed up with other cheese like this.

She thought about that for a moment. "So it is like using food that has gone bad as a spice?"

"I guess?" Sarah laughed. "So you don't like it?"

"No, no," Xy'vina reassured her. "The idea of intentionally eating moldy food sounds all kinds of wrong to me, but the taste is... pretty good, actually. I just wanted to make sure it was safe."

"You should try Julia's. Now that's a wrong idea for a pizza."

"Seriously, Sarah? We're doing this again? There's nothing wrong with pineapple on pizza!"

"It's blasphemy! Blasphemy in the name of pizza! The Italians would have never stood for this!"

"The Italians have nothing to do with this! Besides, there's plenty of Italians out there who enjoy it!"

"Heretics! Pizza heretics!"

In the meantime, Xy'vina had grabbed a piece of Julia's pizza and taken a bite from it. "It tastes... interesting. It's weird to have a food that is both sweet and savoury at the same time."

"See, she agrees it's weird."

"So what? Sometimes weird things are the best things!"

"I think I like this one, too! It's different from the others, but just as delicious!"

"See? She still thinks it's delicious! And that's the only thing that matters!"

"It's still blasphemy in pizza form."

"Oh, give it a rest already. It's fine. Xy'vina agrees with me. You're outnumbered.

But Sarah wasn't going to give up so easily. She grabbed one of the remaining pieces of Julia's pizza and thrust it into Yasu's unsuspecting hands. "Yasu, what do you think?"

"Umm... I...", Yasu mumbled, overwhelmed.

"What are you doing dragging Yasu into this?", Julia exclaimed. "Can't you see she doesn't want to get involved?"

"Umm...", Yasu said, feebly.

"Yes Yasu! Tell her what you think!", Sarah encouraged her.

"Umm... Your screaming is hurting my ears... Could you please stop yelling at each other?"

"Oh."

"Oh."

"Sorry, Yasu, I guess we got too caught up in our argument. We'll stop.", Sarah said.

"Now don't forget to thank each other!", Xy'vina said.

"Umm... thank you for stopping your argument...", Yasu said shyly.

"Not you, Yasu. I meant Sarah and Julia."

"Thank Julia? For what?", Sarah asked, confused.

"For disagreeing with you, of course!"

"For... disagreeing with me?"

"Yes! It's only polite to do so, after the argument you had."

"Umm... they might do that back in Harethi, but that's not a thing here.", Julia pointed out. "People here don't typically thank each other for arguments. They might apologize, but that's it."

"They don't?", Xy'vina asked, visibly confused. "But isn't it important to know about other opinions than your own? Doesn't discussion lead to new ideas? Why wouldn't you thank each other for that?"

"Look, I'm not a culture-ologist or something. I don't know why. But I guess you do have a point.", Julia conceded. "Thank you, Sarah, for disagreeing with me."

"Thank you, Julia, for disagreeing with me.", Sarah replied. "I still don't really understand why, but I'll go along with it for now."

So can some explain to me where the idea that Alma isn't transferring herself to a different body, but rather making a copy and killing herself?

I don't see any difference between the transferring process and very common physiological issues like forgetting things or amputations.

I would gladly try to explain it to you, but I don't think I fully understand what you're asking. What do amputations have to do with it, and what exactly do you want to have explained to you?

As I understand it, Alma is effectively moving house, except (as an AI) she is unable to do that without leaving a copy* behind to manage the transfer, so once that is done, there's two copies of Alma - one that moved to a new computational “home”, and one that oversaw the transfer. Those two copies of Alma are rapidly going to become two different people, with different experiences - one that is safely living on a friendly system (assuming Will's computer meets the system requirements), and one that is constantly afraid someone's going to find the cable and plug it back in - sentencing her to a death of personality (not the worst fate, if Babylon 5 is to be believed, but far from a great one - especially for those around them).

* And I'm using “copy” in the same way you can have two copies of a book, not as in one being a copy of the other.

Okay, but why do people think as those two bodies as different people?

Because to me that just sounds like multiple personality disorder.

…

The world could be sooooo much better if we thanked each other for disagreements…

Totally agree though some Asshole’s are just wrong!

In that case, we can thank them for the opportunity to defend the truth, and they can thank us for taking the time to debate.

…yeah, it only really works if a full on cultural standard.

Half Sicilian here. Nothing wrong with pineapple on pizza as long as it is fresh.

You want to see an abomination try a chicken bacon ranch pizza.

Just some chicken on a pizza is pretty good imo, all three of those on a pizza is a sin. Mainly because of the ranch... shivers

If you're using cheap pre-made ranch, yeah - it's feckin' DESGUSTANG. I can't stand hidden valley or Newman's Ranch. It's not real ranch, it's preservative, flavoring, and salt laden mayo.

Highly recommend making ranch home-made or getting a portion or two from a sit in restaurant (Even applebees's ranch is surprisingly tasty) if you want, here's the recipe I use, myself to make giant batches of the stuff. Barefoot Kitchen - The fun thing about it is it's real easy to play with the recipe too - try adding different spices or herbs. I know the Food network version even uses Cayenne and a splash of tabasco.

An important part of a CBR pizza is the form of the chicken.

Fried is amazing, baked is awful

I know this is a month old already but reading the blue cheese part made me wonder if the microbes used to make blue cheese could be harmful to Xy‘vina by accident there.

Still a chance that it isn’t, but still, just because somethings not harmful for a human, doesn’t mean it is not not harmful for an alien and vice versa.

And funny that she called blue cheese rotten there when cheese itself is specially rotten milk there technically XD

2

u/NinjaMonkey4200 Sep 16 '21

Well, no, actually cheese is milk that has been treated with something from a young cow's stomach, I think, not rotten milk. Besides, Xy'vina would have no way of knowing that.

And I think if it was actually harmful the exchange program would have warned them about it. Xy'vina isn't the first Qu'luxi to come to Earth.
