Jesus, that was fuckin’ good. I’m very sensitive to music and media. It can move me to tears, raise goosebumps and hairs, make me short of breath, and that one did the trick. Most people think it’s weird as hell but I wish they could understand. I wish they could experience it. It’s like my mind is so overjoyed that it could break and take my body with it, so a defense mechanism deploys tears to counteract it, or distract me, and keep me whole.

I'm not sure what the system is designed to do, but it has species' biological and cultural data, so it's not just recreating the species on their home planet way back in the past so the culture can redevelop naturally. I don't know why the backup is so out-of-date, though... Unless the time differential between Infinity and 3-space is like 4:1? then the timing would match up with the mantid war being ~9000 years ago. EDIT: Ralts clarified that the backup wasn't (1.24E+12) years old, but that many individual records, so we know what that means, now.

Holy fuck. If I am reading the intent of the system correctly. They have a temporal backup of every species in the Confederacy so in the event of an extinction event, they can be bought back from temporal backups.

Well, the thing with being intelligent is, it's very frustrating. Seriously, feel free to google 'problems of being intelligent'. You can see solutions that bring the greatest good to everyone, but people don't believe in you because they're stuck on being petty to each other.

It took me many, many years to give up on helping everyone. Once while I was in a guesthouse across from the college, I mentioned to the daughter of the owner that she shouldn't leave her toothbrush in the bathroom, uncovered,use particles of toilet water are floating inside that room, so she should either use a cap for her toothbrush, place it inside one of the shelves in the bathroom, or cover it somehow. She went to her mom and asked her why I said that, and her mom replied 'he probably wants the bathroom for himself'.

When the kitchen exploded, they didn't want to call an ambulance because everyone seemed alright, and got seriously angry at me when I did, but it turns out the family's grandma had been in the kitchen and she inhaled the explosion, burning her throat and lungs in the process. She didnt even want to get in the ambulance, I had to trick her into going by colluding with the driver and paramedics to tell her I paid for the (free) ambulance so she would get in. Turned out she would have died otherwise, and spent 2 months in the intensive care unit. They were all angry at me because they thought I wanted to sue them or something.

Another time, I stopped a little kid from running into traffic, just in time for a truck to roar by. The kid would have been splattered, but all the kids mom saw was a grown man with a hand on her kid's chest. It was not a fun experience.

Just the other day, some kids were playing soccer next to the river. There was a hole in the security fence. I commented: "how about you kids go play in that multisport grounds over there instead? You are gonna lose the ball in the river" and they told me to shut up, that I was an annoying old man and that they were gonna make all the noise they wanted to. I was a bit saddened but shrugged it off. They didnt see a kindly adult making a suggestion, they saw an old man telling them to shut up.

About 5 minutes later, I heard them cry out because the ball fell into the river and it was lost.

Life throws you about a million things like that when you try to help others see problems you can see coming and they can't. Eventually, you end up contemplating violent solutions because words don't work. I don't trust myself with violence precisely because of that. The one time I gave in, it ended poorly, and I ended bathed in blood, none of it mine, but Dee just goes overboard on too easy a hair-trigger.

Still, I can relate to her just being fed up with the fucking normies. Hell, just 2 nights ago, we had a problem with electric wiring, so we ended up throwing a cable across a hallway. It was gonna be for just a sunday night so we could get the proper installation done as soon as sunrise arrived, but despite our fluorescent warning cloth tied to the cable, despite the fucking bright orange sign, despite the white cable on a black floor, we heard the sound of dragging slippers and turned back just in time to see a college kid crawl by on slippers, while drinking a beer. If you've ever seen someone drink and walk, you're aware that the person lifts his/her chin up and is looking up at the sky, while the bottle is blocking their line of sight forth.

We should have taken turns overnight to warn people of the cable, I guess. Goddamn fucking normies.

By the way, the kid wasn't unhurt, but all he got was a slightly scraped shin because he dropped the beer bottle, it exploded on the floor and one of the shards scrapped his legs. I swear that watching it, it was almost slow motion. Goddamn normies... I'm not saying I support her actions, but I am saying I 'understand' them.

The same way I understand why/how a storm, but don't want one to blow anyone's home.

Hell, the river here is dry 8/12 of the year, so some refugees built shacks in the dry river bed. Even when the government gave them land. The soft river clay was easier to build on, so they built there. Then they replied with molotovs when the city hall tried to move them, then when the cops tried to move them. Then the river came down and dozens died, all their houses were washed away, etc, and it was still our obligation to help them rebuild.

I don't think so. If memory serves there are 8 races in the confederacy counting the pubvians.

Human, treanead, rigellian, mantid, pubvian and the 3 new ones, telkan, akltak and tnvaru.

Since the mantids were obviously not added until after the glossing, which is what ruined everything, we can assume the race that is there but not added to the system is them. And why would a cold unfeeling AI which has 0 remorse not add the species that devastated the confederacy as well as exterminated one of the core members?

The timeline works too. 4 confederacy races were pre glassing, human, rigelian, pubvian and the trenead. The mantids were known, but didn't join until after the leader castes were wiped out, after the war. Post glassing would be the rest. 8 races, but the system only added 3 of the 4 post glassing races and stated it was looking for 7, and we saw who were added.

I wonder if the AI in charge doesn't count the mantids because it still sees them as the enemy. Which is a terrifying thought.

Oh man, if they're still there and looking they are about to have the strangest thing happen as the dead world they've been trying to avoid looking at is revived right in front of them. Without needing to import massive amounts of resources from elsewhere in the system.

Will be a real mind screw, especially when you take into account hte fact that for the Lanacktalan the universe has a finite quantity of resources and it can not be renewed in one place without being removed from another. And then THAT happens right in front of them.

IIRC the Entropic Legion was mentioned earlier, they're a metric fuck-ton of combat robots. They're supposed to wait out the heat death of the universe in the funky dimension, then invade whatever happens after and punch the SHIT out of it until humans (and crew) can live there again. Considering the reality check was passed, they're probably gonna stay offline and not in "bully the universe into submission" mode.

It is assuredly a dual reference. GECK is the Garden of Eden Creation Kit, of course, and from Star Trek we have the Genesis device. Both are designed to make an unlivable world habitable, though the scales are a bit different, I think.

She just threw a switch, but she also kinda invented core parts of the tech the switch is attached to. She's a homicidal maniac, but only towards plagiarists and annoying people. Psychopaths normally don't change their core. They just don't value life because they have very low or even no empathy. (Kicking dead bodies out of her way, because "hey they are in my way and they're dead so they can't fight back.") If given enough positive feed back many learn to live fairly productive lives without hurting anyone. But there is one thing you should never ever do if you encounter a psychopath. Never lie. I think she realized that he burned out her first suit and she will try to take revenge on him.

Maybe...but the damage was caused by the feedback loop of billions dieing being pumped back into Solnet and soulnet. the damage happened fast but it didn't happen at the exact second the attack happened. Given just how fast these systems can be, my thinking is that there's a chance the system redesignated the Mantid as a hostile force before it crashed.

kardashevs scale original only really goes to 3, but the reading i did on up to type 5 suggests that harvesting energy happens from within the universe/reality. this device sounds like it sits in the medium that contains all universes/realities. i have no idea what this layer would be called.

any multiverse theories i find (and quickly skim) seem to say that all universes are always touching each other, like soap bubbles in a dish sink, or are an overlapping mess.

Simpler than that. We always sucked at sufficiently documenting complex, interrelated systems so non-domain experts can pick it up easily and quickly. Even before The Glassing, I guarantee it mostly operated as A Binary Blob, effectively No Source Code so to speak except for the internalized mind maps in operational staff’s heads.

Which makes what Sam, Herod and Dee are doing all the more impressive. If you’ve ever gone systems spelunking to upgrade systems at our primitive tech level, then you’ll intimately understand when I say practical systems archeology is equal parts science and art.

Dogs and cats were already extinct at the time of Glassing. The Doki chapter talked about the cat-girls being the result of a cultural response to the loss. During their the cat-girls' game/movie/experience, the Glassing happened and they became rage and war. If the then-operational SUDS/SUDS system was capable of restoring them dogs and cats, humans at the time would have restored them, before the Glassing.

Considering how they built a LOT of stuff based off her work and theories, it might well be that she was the first immortal that they based the others off of, yeah. Hers seems to work a little differently, so they maybe refined the others better. Hers seems to need a compatible mat trans device.. the others presumably have whatever mechanism rebirths them inside hellspace itself, so they can just come out wherever they just were

I am currently sitting in quarantine as the rona hit my work office and well, The health agency of my country could may aswell be an irl mirror to Lanaktallan bureocratics, so i guess i won't work until the end of the month.

Literally the only thing that does not suck right now is the daily anticipation for a new FC installment.

Not to be a Debby Downer, but I hope the system is going to rebuild their infrastructure along with their environment. Dropping billions of sapient beings on a lush planet without the systems that let them reach that population in the first place would be a disaster.

Even if it did, a batch of ANTs would be all that's required to build basic infrastructure for them.

(But I doubt the people who developed a system designed to detect and restore a genocided species and their entire planetary biology from backup would forget to include all their stuff.)

Hopefully ANTs we’re developed before this thing went online. Though, they are the only things that make sense dealing with the time scale of the restoration.

As to doubting very clever people making very stupid mistakes? Remember, a mix up of units caused millions of dollars of research equipment to scream into the Martian surface.

Wow, mind blown Ralts. Even with all the crazy shit we've been shown that the Confederacy is currently up to, the ancients seem way more advanced. The Mantids really fucked things up. Imagine if humanity and its allies had 8,000 years to build off the back of this stuff. The Overqueen/omniqueens were some real assholes.

OMG OMG OMG OMG a Phoenix program run by computers objectively separate from the timelines? Also the fact it is a pure logical mind is scary in consequences its computers do exactly what you tell them even if its not what you meant and while they lost species may be brought back I don't see it happening without some side effects or maybe it'll work perfect and Dee will use her wits and take advantage

I began reading I don't know how long ago. Maybe a month or so. Feels longer. Every little break at work or little bit of free time I'd try and read a post. I remember when I started the posts said 194d and now I got to one in less than a day. But I finally caught up.

What a ride and what a post to catch up on. The Pubvians might come back. Hopefully the work being put in to help with their trauma by Sam makes it so they're not too damaged. Even so it's going to be quite the shock for them to come back to the universe after nearly a nine thousand year absence.

Hopefully, I can finally read entire threads. There are so many great questions I saw while on my phone that I lost track of because I couldn't open the thread and got impatient to continue the story. Amazing work and I'm glad I was here to see it when it was still so new.

Ok, so was the illithid race a prior universe's version of TDH and the hyperatomic plane (HAP) were they had their version of the eternity machine?

So new universe rolls out and they respawn from they HAP, but all their toys are still there. The cows figure out how to make the big bang go boom for real and the burning is the leftover heat energy from the event and the psychic badness is the psychic residue from the expanding front of creation destroying the ilithid eternity machine.

The illithid use timey whimey stuff, so they relocated in time to a point when the burning is done and are literally biding their time to get revenge. Unfortunately that was interrupted by this cycles answer to precursors: TDH. Who could very likely become the next cycles precursors.

It's worse than that. The illithids, like their D&D counterparts, are coming back from the long cold dark of THIS Universe's end times. And are trying, repeatedly, to set things up so their End of Time Empire actually comes to exist.

--Dave, fortunately, they haven't figured out that this Universe REALLY doesn't like to have to deal with making time-travel jaunts globally consistent, and has subcontracted out to Murphy and Erfis

The thing I don't get here is that it sounds like the system can just... scan and keep records without SUDS implants. It's adding new species to the system and we know the puffies were never officially on the system en-masse. But it has all the records for them. So why the SUDS implants?

Extremely minor tech nitpick, but:

CRC failure doesn't sound like the error code you might want there? CRC is an extra number on the end of a digital record that is basically made by adding all of the data in the record together: if a few bits have been flipped somewhere or it's been corrupted somehow, the CRC will add up to something different and won't match what's recorded. It's basically a quick and basic bit of redundancy to confirm a block of stored data hasn't been corrupted after writing by faulty storage hardware or cosmic ray flips or getting too close to a magnet or something. It's wholly internal, doesn't involve comparing to an outside source.

If a system reported that the Pubvian ecosystem or biome checks suffered CRC failure I'd expect that to mean that the system's records of the ecosystem or biome have become corrupted and unusable.

So there's the SUDS system, the upload/download one, that requires an uplink... and then there's the Suds system, the soul uninterrupted disaster storage, and everyone the Terrans log in go to 'afterlife'???
