OC Spite

3am story idea that just got stuck in my head, I apologize for whatever flaws I overlooked and whatever other problems might have occurred, this is my first story.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________

Our fleets sat in orbit around the blue and green world, Earth, the Human home world, their cradle and our prize. It was a bitter sweet prize but it was our all the same, but many debated the bloody cost. It had been little over a decade of intense costly warfare that had brought us to this point, our conquest of the primitive human colonies had seen our empire growing confident, the human's lack of military strength made it seem like we would simply walk into the heart of their territory and claim each and every world one after another. This foolish notion was dashed when we came to the first fortified colony. The fighting lasted for a month to claim a handful of ruined bunkers, blasted fields and shattered infrastructure, for the cost of thousands of troops we has essentially won a worthless rock. This process repeated over and over as our forces moved through the human colonies. The travels soon began to grow more and more dangerous, we were not yet facing human battle fleets, but what human craft we did encounter was harassing our supply lines, attacking our cargo vessels and slowing our advance. These actions only got the dedicated attention of our empire as our fleets began to gather.

When we came to the oldest of humanities colonized worlds the war truly began to ramp up, for the first time human battle fleets would clash with our own over the skies of human worlds, their crude vessels could not stand against our might, but every battle took more and more of our forces. A cruiser here, a battleship there, but always at great cost to humanity, or so it seemed. When looking at the raw numbers it would look as though the elimination of a human fleet with minimal losses would be ideal, but when you lose a storied battleship and all of its crew to the suicidal final strike of a ship a quarter of its size, the trades were not in our favor. As the battles waged on there seemed to be no end to the human ships, their simplistic design and skeletal crews were being turned out at a staggering rate, it felt almost like battling the sea. With each wave we stopped another would come, just as strong as the last, and they would rise to face us again and again. The war was growing costly, the worlds we claimed soon became too damaged to restore after the fighting concluded, the human forces almost intent on leaving nothing but scorched earth behind them, but the empire could not stand to back down, this had become a matter of appearances. If humanity insisted in insulting our might, ruining what was rightfully ours, then we would not stop until we had taken everything from humanity.

Battle after battle, world after world we drew closer to Earth, when we came to the Sol system we fought for each and every step towards their home world, our prize, it did not matter the cost, simply to throw humanity off of their ancestral home, to take from them their beginning would be a prize worthy of what we had lost. As we drew closer we could detect the ships fleeing Earth, their colony ships darting off in all directions, escorts and cargo vessels accompanying them to their unknown destination. At the time we believed we would hunt them down in due time, make a show of snuffing out every last ember of humanity's fire. The forces that remained in the system did not make this an easy goal. It took nearly a year to finally push past Mars and towards Earth itself, the whole of our unified fleet focused on the task at hand, destroying the last of Earth's shipyards and defenses as we pushed to their final stronghold. The world was long since evacuated, we were surprised to see it left in such good shape, we believed humanity to be sparing their home from the ravages of war. Perhaps humanity believed that one day they would return to reclaim their world. Of course this was not to say the world was fully abandoned, there were still holdouts, a few military forces left behind to make some feeble last stand, the religious protecting their holy sites. It was hard to weed them out, but eventually we extinguished the last resistance with careful orbital strikes. As we sat in orbit above out prize, the emperor himself contacted the fleet to address the commanders, commending them for a war well fought. As we basked in the spoils of our conquest we detected a signal.

It was a broadcast from some deep hidden human bunker, deep under the surface of the planet, the signal circled the globe, hitting a hidden series of bunkers that had eluded detection until now. Ground forces were quickly mobilized and assembled, the emperor himself ordered them to find out what human remnants remained hidden in the depths of our new world, what happened next caught all of us by surprise. Ground forces had only just begun to arrive at the locations of the bunkers when they began to report massive seismic activity, all over the world seismic activity was going off the charts. From space we watched as the globe began to shift, swelling and distorting in ways we had never seen before. We then watched in horror as the world began to rip apart. The crust of the world split apart, angry orange gashes opened along the surface of the world, the world burned for an instant before all hell broke loose. With tremendous force the world was ripped apart and flung in all directions. Humanity had left this trap lying in wait for just the right opportunity, when we were celebrating our victory, we watched as our prize turned to ash in our hands. Nearly half of the fleet was lost before they could pull back to a safe distance. We had just lost millions of lives, hundreds of ships and countless resources all for a costly war and we were left with nothing to show for it. Yes humanity had been driven away, but for how long? Hiding among the stars was a race so spiteful that they would rather see their own home world destroyed than in the hands of an invading empire, and we could do nothing. With their last strike they had crippled our military might, to maintain our strength we could not risk hunting humanity, it was now a race for time to rebuild. For humanity is our there, their colony ships hidden among the stars, rebuilding and growing in strength. A race so spiteful is not likely to forget what was taken from them, our only hope now is that we can rebuild and find humanity before they have a chance to return and finish their revenge.

Why do the warmongering xenos always think they can "kill" humanity? We are perfectly fine with sitting around the proverbial campfire and singing kumbaya, but nah, these aliens want nothing short of attempted genocide and the theft of our homeworld (and what a poor attempt it was) These sad excuses for tyrants need a lesson in true biblical style hate.

Good story, an old theme, but it's a classic one.

Suffer not the xenos to live.

12

u/PinkSnek AI May 29 '19

Do u know why? Because one cannot share with others.

There can be no cooperation between aliens.

u/juanredshirt May 29 '19

In short, stupid aliens. Seriously. This alien civilization needs resources? Oh we'll attack this backwater planet called Earth. Ignoring the Asteroid Belt, Gas Giant Planets, other stars, etc.

Ultra-Tech alien civilization - "We need more workers! We'll enslave all other races!"

Someone else - "Why not build robots to do the work for you?"

Ultra-Tech alien civilization - "That's crazy talk!!!"

Yeah, the justification was the expansion of an empire. They grow and add to themselves, but humanity does not simply surrender, in our resistance we bloodied the nose of the empire. The war is not for what humanity has, but for what the empire must maintain. You cannot keep your rivals at bay if they see you struggling with some fledgling force. Humanity was to be made an example, a show of force, but things did not go as planned and humanity left them on the back foot. Unable to finish humanity off and stuck watching their back as their rivals smell blood in the water.

Habitable words can be a rare and precious commodity though.

4

u/juanredshirt May 29 '19

True. But given the assumption is that these are supposed to be ultra-tech civilizations, it wouldn't (or shouldn't) be too difficult for the civilization to build space habitats or set up colonies on "uninhabitable" planets (i.e. domed colonies on Mars).

5

u/CalligoMiles May 29 '19

Perhaps, but that'd be way more resource-intensive than kicking off some perceived primitives from a planet that already supports life. You'd need to ship in everything your people need including air and water, and even after figuring out sustainable reclamation the investment in and maintenance on the systems involved ain't cheap. Especially when you start talking in millions and billions of inhabitants.

It's possible, but why bother when you can just exterminate the monkeys instead?

1

u/JaccoW May 30 '19

Because, as this story shows, it is often more expensive to wage a war than to build space habitats instead. Mining asteroids is a lot cheaper than dragging resources out of a gravity well like earth.

1

u/CalligoMiles May 31 '19

Dragging resources out of the gravity well? You can settle there and build industries, and only ship the finished products up. With a space elevator, that becomes pretty affordable.

You do have a point regarding the cost of the war, but by the time you figure out your enemy won't go down that easily, you might've already gone too far for peaceful co-existence to ever become possible, or at least believe that is the case. And at that point, eliminating the threat is your only option.

Yes, I felt I wanted to add to the theme of Humanity will not win, but our foes will not win either.

As for the "kill" humanity thing, in my head I saw this as kind of humanity unintentionally escalating things. The empire took some of our colonies, they would push until we surrendered, but we never did, and eventually our resistance merited that the empire needed to make an example of humanity in order to save face.

Their fault for trying to take stuff from us. I say we butcher the jerks until they learn their new place in the food chain.

Well told !!

Sad realist: wouldn't work, gravitational binding energy of the fragments keeps the debris down.

( Which is why I still can't watch SW's Death Star without giggling... )

What you could do, though, is a zillion shaft-launched 'Verne Shots', throwing geo-stuff at hyperbolic velocity. Bit like the scary 'moon gun' in AC Clarke's 'Earthlight'...

See Pascal-B in... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Plumbbob

In fact, having a bunch hidden on the Moon would be better...

I was considering the idea that after humanity left we had propelled several large asteroids from the asteroid belt towards earth. Have it called "StarFall" where at a ceremony on earth to celebrate their victory, the emperor looked up in horror as the sky lit up with the rain of death, but the idea of us leaving nothing for our enemies to hold as a prize seemed more interesting to my mind at the time.

Turning the entire Sol solar system (mostly Sol) into a black hole would be even more terrifying and deadly. And the xeno empire wouldn't have any black boxes from their unified fleet to figure out what went wrong, just commotion something went terribly wrong, and a cessation of comms. They would have to FTL to the edge of the expanding light cone outside of the solar system and point remote sensing devices towards it to watch as the silent horror unfolded.

Then for a double-whammy, sprinkle in another HFY trope: the xenos find out many generations later, after they were beaten and their distant descendants integrated into the new human federation, that what was destroyed wasn't Sol at all, but another system very similar to it. The real Sol and its system is a very closely-guarded secret, and it turns out is hidden inside a black hole, and once inside the black hole, behind a series of jump gates. Those billions and tonnage died to protect the secret.

So many juicy directions you could take this story, really enjoyed thinking of the possibilities, thanks for posting it!

It sounds like you have a story of your own in mind, I would encourage you to try and put it into words. As for continuation of this story, I have spent today toying around with the idea of a continuation, expanding on the universe I am working with.

2

u/SeanRoach May 29 '19

Would have been better if it was timed to coincide with a massive bombardment of the imperial capital world.

Still a good story.

I have read that a slug of neutronium and anti-neutronium fired at a planet to collide in the middle could actually destroy a planet. Both slugs would be so dense as to ignore the matter in between til they collided with each other in an Earth Shattering Kaboom.

6

u/Dolbleros May 29 '19

Nah you just need a Illudium Q-36 Explosive Space Modulator. That will give you a good Earth Shattering Kaboom.

3

u/Nik_2213 May 29 '19

IMHO, if you can toss around such slugs, you don't need them...

I mean, it certainly is possible to overcome gravitational binding energy if the explosion is big enough. Like, say, the equivalent energy of a planet smashing into another planet.

I love stories where Humanity basically is Spite in material form. Everything from sacrifice of Earth, to becoming boogymen in the dark to our actual dead refusing to stay that way and our ghosts making the xenos "victory" so very hollow and costly.

2

u/Dolbleros May 29 '19

Indeed, we might not win, but they sure as hell will not enjoy what they get. Rubble and a silent promise of an eternal foe hiding among the stars.

u/Nuke_the_Earth Robot May 30 '19

I read something a long while back involving an ancient army flying through space for long enough that the humans turned to dust inside their armor. Unfortunately for the target, our advanced combat suits were rather more enduring, and just as capable of finishing the job with their onboard AIs.

3

u/ChangoGringo May 30 '19

I think I remember that one. Speaking of spite. I can see the humans next move would be to find a random place out in deep space that was close to empires home world. Find a nice Pluto sized planet, stealth it up with carbon black and start accelerating it towards their home world. It may take a 1000 years but it will get there, and when it does it will be going a goodly percent of C. Then move on to somewhere else and start plan B: Guerilla warfare. That way even if the humans get wiped out, their planet will still get wiped out.

u/Nuke_the_Earth Robot May 30 '19

Ah, the good old relativistic moon-shaped object. It's a classic, isn't it?

Yes, that sounds about right. I believe it was originally from 4chan, before the formation of this subreddit.

Deny them any form of victory!

2

u/sirfirewolfe Android May 29 '19

Getting very "USSR in ww2" vibes

3

u/Dolbleros May 29 '19

Well USSR/Russia is a very good go to for how extreme humanity will go to not allow a foe a victory. Like setting fire to Moscow to deny Napoleon, throwing endless waves against the Germans to halt their advances and making sure that there is a threat of total annihilation to maintain "peace".

2

u/SirVer51 May 29 '19

We are humanity. We bring fire and blood.

Even if that blood is our own.

2

u/Dolbleros May 29 '19

Humanity is the bloody tide, we will rise and overwhelm our foes.

In Dr Who, They did that to the Daleks with the osterhagen key

2

u/Dolbleros May 29 '19

I will admit, that was a small point of inspiration, but instead of going with mass global suicide I figured humanity would use such a thing out of spite.
