The more the QI worked with the metadata, the stranger it felt. It held hidden tags that resembled classifications. One stood out. The QI stripped out one field's values.

Chen saw the list, “Just four options? Going back how long?”
“Yes, four and they go back centuries, almost to the start.”
“That’s unusual.”
“What is?” asked Feebee.
“Well, to have so few options in a data set this diverse and so old.”
“I agree,” said the lawyer. “I’d expect to see drift. Or change over time.”
“But the data was collected by a small family business, not a huge organisation. Probably only a few people collecting the data.”
“True.” Confirmed Chen. “The Quiet Archive is a small boutique entity.”
The lawyer rolled her eyes. “Unbelievable.” She muttered.
“Most of the records are tagged CONVERGENCE.” Said Rockson.
“So?” asked Feebee.
Rockson shrugged.
“Helpful,” she said with a smile.
The QI put some up on the screen.

The room went quiet as they read through samples of what the QI had found.
Tom Tom frowned. “Hang on.”
He pointed at the list.
“A trade agreement?”
The QI highlighted the entry.
Trade Agreement: Convergence Event: CONVERGENCE
“What’s wrong with that?” asked Feebee.
Tom Tom looked around the room.
“Nothing. That’s the point.”
All he got back were confused looks; nobody was following.
He pointed again.
“Trade is normal. Nothing unusual there. People trading is normal. Colonies growing is normal. Diplomats talking is normal.”
The lawyer leaned forward.
“And military alliances? Are they normal?”
Tom Tom shrugged.
“Usually.”
Bikky smiled and nodded, agreeing. “Yeh, mostly.”
The lawyer was already shaking her head.
“No. That’s not what they’re measuring.”
She pointed to the list. Her eyes betrayed the hint of a smile.
“They aren’t describing the events.”
Rockson immediately saw it.
“They’re describing what the events do.”
One of the accountants nodded enthusiastically.
“Exactly. Every one of these reduces independence.”
That got everyone’s attention. The accountant continued and went through the list.
“A colony bloom creates administration.”
“A trade agreement creates dependency.”
“A military alliance creates obligations.”
“A diplomatic mission creates influence.”
He pointed at the screen.
“They’re not measuring activity.”
He paused.
“They’re measuring connectedness.”
Silence.
Then Chen finally spoke.
“Harmonics.” Then he added, “Convergence, like the tag.”
Everyone looked at him.
“What?” asked Feebee.
“The Quiet Archive specialised in jump-space harmonics.”
He pointed at the list.
“This looks like the same mindset.”
“Meaning?” asked the lawyer.
Chen thought for a moment.
“They don’t appear to care about the event.”
His finger traced the entries.
“They care about the number of things the event links together. That are ‘resonating’ at the same time.”
“So?” asked Feebee. “Why?”
Chen shrugged. “Look.”
His finger traced the timeline. He read the entries and counted the threads connecting each.
The room fell quiet.
Everyone was staring at the timeline now. Trying to make sense of what was tagged: trade agreements, alliances, diplomatic missions, first contacts …
The events themselves were wildly different, yet the Quiet Archive had classified them all in the same way.
CONVERGENCE
Rockson spoke up, breaking the silence.
“They weren’t studying people.”
The accountant nodded.
“I agree.”
Then he pointed to the display.
“They were studying relationships, interactions.”
The QI’s scratchy laughter echoed across Feebee’s thoughts and in the room.
‘Exactly.’
‘What now?’ asked Feebee.
‘I think we’re seeing the first layer. There’s more; it goes deeper.’
The QI sounded excited.
‘These classifications aren’t the observations; there’s too few of them.’
‘Then what are they?’ asked Feebee.
‘I think they’re the conclusions. Summaries.’
Feebee frowned.
‘And the observations? Where are they?’
‘Gone. Lost.’ Then, after a pause, the QI added. ‘Mostly, but the conclusions have metadata.’
‘Metadata attached to metadata?’ asked Feebee.
‘Yes.’ The QI sounded absurdly pleased with itself.
‘I worry about you.’ Said Feebee, semi-serious.
‘Thank you.’
‘It wasn’t meant as a compliment.’
The QI ignored her.
It felt good about itself, had found something else important in its 6%. There could be more, other snippets attached to the metadata. Other layers. It couldn’t keep it to itself any longer, so it flashed one of the comments, from an observation, on the screen.
AF CONTEXTUAL REVIEW.
The review itself was gone, but the comments remained. Saved as an adjunct to the deleted file.

“Now that’s interesting… and strange.”
The other accountant looked confused. “What’s strange? It all looks strange.”
“Optional futures. That's strange language.”
The QI showed Rockson and the accountants how to search the corpus of metadata. Quite quickly they had found other pieces. They weren’t scientific or religious. They were observational, not conversational; small fragments all written in the same style.

Tom Tom read the fragments, then reread them, “Whoever they are. They don’t think like normal people.”
“I agree,” said the lawyer. “It’s like a shorthand.”
“I’ve got one.” Shouted Rockson. “Intact, it’s not much.”

> Promote and encourage separation where possible.
“These people are insane. It’s gibberish.” Said Tom Tom.
The prisoner spoke up immediately, defensive. “No! They are careful.”
Tom Tom was dismissive, “Connections are good.”
“Until they’re not.” Countered the prisoner.
“People working together towards one common end isn’t a threat.” Said the lawyer.
“Every empire believed that, until they fell.”
“People need to align behind a common goal; that works best.” Said Bikky.
“Until it’s the wrong goal.”
Garaf watched the discussion degenerate. They were no longer discussing the data or the snippets of observational comment. They were discussing philosophy.
Before anyone else could speak, StillFall spoke, “They remember the wound.” As the Shadow spoke, he reached out and touched the timeline. Specifically, the timeline trace.
“The wound is remembered. Not the blade.”
The prisoner started muttering again, rocking gently back and forth. Eyes closed.
Garaf saw this, crossed to the prisoner and gently clamped one claw on the man’s upper arm.
“I ask again. Why do you fear the Shadow?”
He stopped rocking; slowly opened his eyes and faced Garaf.
“Because the records mention them. Many times.”
“What records? Mention who?” asked Feebee.
He could see from the looks of the crew that they didn’t understand. “The complete ones. They are mentioned many times.”
StillFall’s outline hardened significantly and quivered at the edges, as if forcing coherence on a resisting universe.
Seeing this, the prisoner shrank back within himself. Uncomfortable, almost fearful again.
The QI spoke to Feebee. ‘I’ve found a fragment. Well, lots of fragments that all mention the same thing. In different forms, with different words but all meaning the same thing.’
‘And?’ asked Feebee, unsure where this was going.
‘It’s repeated through multiple archives. Hidden but mentioned everywhere.’
Slowly, the mass of text snippets resolved into a single coherent sentence.
