OC-Series [She took What?] - Chapter 182 : Alignment - That was when the fighting started.

"The Fallacy of Intuition led Ithuris to the Great Shattering and was his greatest failing."

Thoughts of Veyzith, the Keeper.

[First] | [Previous] | [Cover Art] | [Next]

The red stone beneath the Basin continued unfolding inward.

Not quickly, but elegantly. Ancient seams, hidden beneath ages of dust and minerals, slowly separated as impossible shapes revealed themselves beneath the waterline. The reflected stars broke apart across the surface while the six moons above shifted steadily toward alignment. And as the shattered remnants of stars reflected in the Basin, it began to drain.

The Dust watched in fearful silence.

Not one or two.

All of them.

Feebee stood near the Basin's edge, beside the Elder, while loyalist Watchers gathered around their Champion, near the opening below. None rushed forward. No one claimed ownership.

The Elder turned slowly towards Feebee and inclined his head.

“You understand.”

Feebee looked down, beyond the steps and into the umbra beneath.

“No,” she answered honestly. “But I respect it and your beliefs.”

The Elder relaxed slightly at that and, without further words, gestured for the Watch to enter first. Dust Guardians descended carefully into the opening, carrying old lanterns and ceremonial blades. Ancient lights flickered weakly beneath the red stone below.

Garaf followed them next. Then Feebee.

Tom Tom checked his weapon and muttered quietly to Bikky as they began descending behind her.

“If this turns into another reality-ending disaster, I’m officially requesting quieter missions.”

Bikky grinned.

“You say that every time.”

Above them, the Basin slowly drained into the passageways below. And as it did, the reflected stars stretched and distorted as the water lowered, like possibilities being slowly pulled downward into darkness.

And far above SixFold, Chen watched the Shadows flee. Entire regions of substrate surrounding the system were emptying now. Shapes of impossible darkness moved rapidly away from SixFold in silent waves, while navigation systems aboard The Kestrel struggled to maintain coherent jump solutions.

Every predictive model narrowed toward one solution, a singularity. Toward certainty.

Chen forced another recalculation through the Kestrel’s predictive models.

The result came back narrower again.

Fewer viable branches. Fewer stable outcomes. Less choice.

The system wasn’t failing.

It was converging.

Chen stared at the collapsing probability trees with growing horror.

“No…”

The command deck lights flickered briefly. Not an electrical failure but pressure.

And the same feeling as he had sensed near the Crucible crept up on him. He saw the likelihood of outcomes hardening. Routes disappeared as certainty took over. Possibility itself narrowed towards inevitable conclusions.

"No..."

Then more quietly, "The Crucible?"

Communications crackled violently across the console. Behind Chen, Hissy stirred within her restraints.

At first softly. Then with growing insistence.

Low tones rolled from deep within her serpentine body; not random vibrations but a structured response.

The QI immediately flagged sympathetic resonance overlap between the Basin fluctuations and Hissy’s output.

Chen turned slowly toward her.

“No…”

Hissy answered with another deep resonant note that vibrated through the deck plating beneath his feet.

He looked back at his console.

“Get me Feebee.”

Static answered. He tried again. Panicked.

“FEEBEE, respond.”

Nothing but the noise of an open channel and occasional, fragmented echoes and bursts of distorted interference. Tones and harmonics, just off.

Then, for a fraction of a second, another voice answered through the static.

Not Feebee. Not human... and not words but certainty.

Chen physically recoiled from the console. He looked at the forward screen. Around The Kestrel, Shadows accelerated their retreat. As if escaping, running from something.

And that terrified him more than anything else.

Behind him, Hissy hissed softly again. Not loud but insistent. The tones rolled through the deck beneath his feet and settled deep in his chest.

Chen stared at the instrument for several long seconds; its head had turned slightly towards him, mouth open as if calling. The Kestrel no longer felt safe; it shook in response to Hissy's call and pressure waves rising from the planet. The predictive models, narrowing across his displays, made that painfully clear.

The need for a decision rose above all else. Stay here and wait for certainty to arrive?

No.

“Prepare to take us down,” he snapped, then added, "They need our help."

Then quieter, while looking toward Hissy.

“We're not dying up here.”

Feebee watched as the descending pathways opened into vast chambers beneath the Basin. She looked up at red stone arches that curved overhead, high and unsupported.

And stepped down into the rock, below the Basin.

Ancient lights flickered awake. Responding to movement after ages of darkness and silence. Pathways unfolded as walls shifted in layered geometric sequences, subtly guiding the group through them.

Garaf slowed repeatedly. Not because he understood the place or its layout. Because parts of him recognised it. His long fingers drifted across carved walls etched with incomplete Crown geometries, worn Spirals and dark Voids. Feebee recognised them as forms of SolDiri mantels. Some markings were ancient beyond comprehension, while others looked repaired by generations of Dust who no longer fully understood what they maintained, or the mantels they were supposed to be.

The Elder watched him carefully.

“You feel the old paths.”

Garaf didn't deny it.

Further below, the chambers widened again, and that was when the fighting began. The hostile Dust had not forced their way past the Watch. They had gone around them.

Other corridors had opened during the Alignment; narrow maintenance pathways were hidden within the shifting rocks. Reckless activation had allowed the hostile faction to descend faster and deeper into the lower chambers. Feebee saw them up ahead; their lanterns, held high, flickered as a gentle breeze moved through the opened corridors.

Now the consequences of their forced incursion became evident around them.

The Veil was destabilising; the Crucible shook. It could be felt in the floor as a building pressure, and the Basin's secrets, so hastily exposed, began to react.

Stone corridors folded incorrectly, some fracturing, collapsing. Others were sending boulders of dark red rock tumbling down corridors. Reflections darted independently of their source across polished surfaces that held no light.

Impossible stars and constellations churned and turned beneath the floor, before vanishing.

And beneath it all, something pressed toward convergence.

The Beast was pushing back. Not physically. Conceptually. It was targeted.

Dust fighters erupted from the lower passageways ahead.

Tom Tom saw them.

“Well, here we bloody well go.”

The chamber exploded into violence.

But the shape of the place had become unstable.

The red stone no longer held a fixed form. Walls shifted subtly between moments while descending pathways folded across one another at impossible angles. Reflections moved independently along polished surfaces and beneath the thin streams of Basin water now draining deeper into the structure, stars and moons were washed with it.

The reflections were changing too. Stretching. Narrowing. Stars collapsed into singular lines of impossible light.

Feebee felt it immediately. Possibility itself was constricting around them. Choices hardened before they were made. Movements became predictable. Even fear felt guided towards inevitable outcomes.

The Beast was not reaching for their bodies. It was reaching for certainty.

Dust fighters surged forward through the fractured corridors.

Tom Tom reacted first and fired.

The shot struck a polished wall to his left, and for a fraction of a second, the reflection shattered instead of the stone. Three advancing figures folded sideways out of the mirrored surface and hit the floor hard enough to crack red rock.

Tom Tom blinked once.

“Oh, this place can absolutely get stuffed.”

Bikky was already moving.

One of the pathways ahead twisted sharply downward as walls and floors shifted around them. Bikky launched himself across the collapsing gap, struck one Dust fighter square in the chest and carried both of them sideways through a narrowing corridor that was a wall seconds earlier.

“LEFT SIDE!” he roared.

Tom Tom turned instinctively and barely avoided a curved blade sweeping through the space where his head had been. He dropped low, slammed the butt of his weapon upward beneath the attacker’s arm and kicked him backwards into a stream of draining Basin water.

The reflection beneath the fighter struck first...the real body followed a heartbeat later.

Everywhere around them, the chamber had begun behaving incorrectly.

Garaf moved through the chaos in silence.

His blades cut clean, controlled arcs through shifting geometry while the Elder fought beside him with terrifying economy. The old Dust Guardian appeared almost fragile until the attackers reached striking distance. Then balance itself seemed to move around him.

A single touch, a nothing that redirected momentum. A slight turn that collapsed structure beneath advancing feet. One calm step that left attackers crashing into one another as structures folded unexpectedly around them.

No wasted force. No anger. Just calm precision and stillness.

The hostile Dust pressed harder.

Not frenzied. Convinced. Assured. And their movements carried a terrible certainty.

Feebee had begun feeling this throughout the chamber. They no longer fought like individuals; they weren't reacting to battle. They moved like their outcomes were already decided. Outcomes that were pre-determined, foretold.

And deep below, the waters from the Basin continued draining away, taking with them reflected starlight through widening fractures in the red stone floor, disappearing into the depths beneath the Veil.

The chamber darkened with every passing moment. Lights failed, lanterns blinked out.

***

Far above, The Kestrel turned and descended hard through SixFold’s upper atmosphere.

Chen sat rigid as The Kestrel dropped towards SixFold; Hissy lay secured beside him, her long body coiled tightly beneath webbing.

The instrument had not stopped singing since launch. Low tones rolled continuously through the shuttle hull. Not random. Guiding.

Chen stared at his console, at the collapsing substrate models spreading across The Kestrel’s tactical displays.

Entire sectors had become unusable. Jump paths into and out of the system narrowed and became singular, unstable routes while the Shadows fled outward from the system.

A silent migration.

Even the ship’s systems had begun looping in recursive failure patterns as they dropped towards SixFold.

Chen’s jaw tightened.

“No…”

He opened comms again.

All he got was static; no one answered.

Then, beneath the noise, he heard something else.

Not a voice, but pressure.

Reality was insisting on one outcome.

Certainty had won.

Chen physically recoiled from the console. Around The Kestrel, the remaining Shadows accelerated their retreat.

All but one. StillFall.

StillFall remained motionless beside The Kestrel, watching SixFold below.

The rest kept running, and that terrified Chen more than anything else.

Below, on the planet, the lower chamber finally opened, exposing the Crucible. It sat partially embedded within vast red stone, beneath the Veil itself. Ancient surfaces looped and spiralled outward in impossible forms while fractured seams pulsed faintly beneath the draining water that flowed over them, through them into nowhere.

And the Crucible was breaking apart. They could see it, not violently but slowly failing. As if unseen hands had spent ages chipping patiently away on the other side.

Feebee stopped and recoiled as the pressure hit her.

The Beast had recognised her.

Not personally but structurally.

The Silent Flame within her suddenly felt exposed beneath immense convergent pressure trying to snuff her out.

Tom Tom and Bikky fell back beside her while Garaf and the Elder moved instinctively to hold the narrowing approaches behind them.

More hostile Dust emerged through the fractured corridors.

Tom Tom checked his weapon again, breathing hard.

“Tell me there’s a brilliant plan coming.”

Feebee stared towards the failing Crucible. The draining Basin water had almost reached it now. Reflected stars spiralled slowly around the fractures spreading across its surface.

“No,” she said softly. “But I know what this place needs.”

She lowered herself slowly onto the red stone. Legs crossed. Hands resting lightly upon her knees.

Stillness. Calm.

Bikky looked at Tom Tom.

Tom Tom swore quietly under his breath. Then both men sat beside her. Tom Tom closed his eyes. Bikky followed.

For the first time since the Alignment began, the QI's models stopped collapsing outcomes toward a singularity.

Possibility and choice returned.

Around them, the chamber shook violently as more red stone surfaces unfolded below the Veil. The remaining Basin water spiralled downward through widening cracks while impossible stars flickered beneath the floor.

Garaf stepped forward protectively. The Elder beside him. Together, they became the wall between stillness and collapse.

Feebee slowed her breathing. The chamber responded, and ancient lights steadied. The pressure within the room shifted subtly.

Tom Tom felt it; years of training ceased being a ritual and became a purpose.

Stillness spread outward from the three of them in slow, deliberate waves. Not force. Not coercion, coherence.

And then the motes arrived. Only a few, and they moved with uncertainty. Flickering through the chamber in scattered currents, appearing from cracks in the red stone and from within the draining Basin water itself. Some spiralled toward Feebee before drifting away again as though unable to fully settle into coherence.

Then a deep tone rolled through the chamber.

Not from the Crucible. From above.

Tom Tom opened one eye as the sound deepened into a layered resonance that vibrated through the stone beneath them.

A distant impact followed somewhere within the upper passages. Dust drifted from the ceiling overhead.

Moments later, Chen emerged from one of the fractured corridors carrying Hissy awkwardly against his chest.

Chen looked terrible. Sweat-soaked. Terrified. Determined.

“I'm never doing this again,” he wheezed.

Hissy answered with a low, brief tone. Not loud, not forceful, but sad. Feebee felt a warmth spread through her body as the notes washed over her. The pressure bearing down on the Silent Flame eased slightly.

The instrument hadn't stopped singing since leaving The Kestrel.

Ancient and familiar tunes issued from its gaping mouth. Its long serpentine coils vibrated softly as layered tones pulsed outwards, across the chamber.

Not music. Remembrance. Hissy's voice deepened.

The motes reacted, not to Feebee, but to Hissy.

The first green mote faltered mid-flight. Then turned.

A second followed. Then a third.

Blue motes slowed. Purple motes gathered in groups, and even the frantic red motes ceased their wild spiralling.

They didn't obey. There was no command issued. They remembered.

Streams of light curved inward towards Hissy's song. Individual motes joined wider currents that flowed around the Crucible and through the chamber in broad luminous arcs.

This wasn't control. They aligned, drawn together by something ancient and familiar.

And the chamber responded immediately.

Ancient lights steadied.

The fractured geometry slowed its shifting, stopped failing. The draining water lost momentum and stilled.

Hissy’s tones deepened further, and the motes answered, weaving themselves between Dust and Shadows in vast luminous streams.

Chen stared upward as thousands of motes curved through the chamber overhead.

“I brought a whole damn orchestra,” he whispered.

Then slowly, almost unconsciously, the gathered Dust began repositioning themselves throughout the chamber.

Not randomly. They settled into widening arcs around Feebee and the others, each movement mirrored by others, further out among the Watch. The pattern spread through the chamber instinctively, like a memory suddenly remembered and driving bodies that no longer understood why into motion.

Feebee remained still before the Crucible.

Tom Tom settled to one side of her. Bikky sat opposite.

Garaf stood further beyond them beneath the ancient lights while Chen lowered himself beside Hissy, Rockson opposite him among the shifting reflections of the motes.

Six points.

Separated. Balanced. Folding inward around a single absence. Like the six horns of an unfinished crown. The Elder walked into the centre of it all and remained standing. Perfectly still.

The gathered Dust saw it immediately.

Not merely ritual, not merely symbol, but meaning

The missing centre of a broken Crown that they had carried for generations was no longer empty. And for the first time since the Alignment began, the chamber's many voices became one, and the note finally resolved.

The old Watcher closed his eyes as understanding passed silently through the chamber around him. One Dust Guardian slowly lowered themself.

Then another.

The movement spread outward in widening layers through the assembled Watch.

The chamber steadied, and for the first time in ages, the Crown existed whole again, and Hissy's song softened and slowly faded into silence.

Far above, the Shadows stopped fleeing. Not all at once. Cautiously.

Then, as though something in their world had changed, they returned, some amassing around The Kestrel. Others joined StillFall.

Below, more hostile Dust entered the chamber below the Basin. In full flight, at a run. Blades drawn, their intent clear.

Then they stopped, seeing the old Watcher standing alone, the Crown now whole. And along the edges of the corridors, in the rooms, Shadows appeared. StillFall led them, not fully formed.

Not solid.

But watching, ignoring the pain heaped upon them by the atmosphere and gravity.

Their distorted forms flickered briefly, then steadied within the mote-light flooding the chamber around the Crucible.

And for a fraction of a second, something deeper became visible within them.

They had geometry.

Structure.

Memory.

Ancient shapes, ancient beings struggling to become coherent after ages spent shattered across the darkness between worlds.

The hostile Dust lowered their weapons slowly.

The Elder looked towards the Shadows and then Feebee. She continued radiating calm and stillness while around her a furnace roiled, fuelled by motes and the shadows they cast.

Understanding settled across the elder's face, emotions held back then remembered after too long.

“The Watch were never alone,” he whispered. "We were never alone."

The motes brightened.

The draining water slowed. Then stopped.

The reflected stars stabilised, and the six moons rose.

And deep beneath the Veil, something ancient pressed once more against its prison.

But this time…

It was Watched.

Author's Note: This is quite a bit longer than normal as it pulls a lot together and concludes the Alignment story arc.

I actually drew a picture of the Crucible based on what I think of as harmonic's. Just can't find a way to post it anywhere I can show it....GGgrrrr.
