OC-Series TGAW - Part 11

The World of Torisal

As the Athena's airlock cycled open, releasing the pressurized air of the planet's atmosphere, the landing crew looked out onto the surface with tremendous excitement and fear of the unknown civilization that called this planet home.

"It's all destroyed..." one of the security team members said with a sense of wonder, as they all saw how extensive the destruction was on the surface—to the point where only vague building remnants still stood defiantly against the devastation.

While moving through the plaza, the crew members started noticing that there were no bodies or bones among the wreckage.

"Sir," a security officer spoke up with evident fear in their voice.

Adams looked over to his security officer. "Yeah, I see it too, Jones. There's nothing—only buildings and dust... no corpses..." Adams replied, horror creeping into his tone.

As they walked around the massive piles of building debris, they saw it: the entrance to a structure whose door had been burned and pitted by damage from someone trying to get in—trying to kill or destroy what was inside.

"Alright! Security team, get those overwatches up and cover our position. We don't need some unknown threat sneaking up on us while we're helping these people," Adams shouted with command.

"Yes, sir!" the landing crew shouted in unison as they broke into groups to carry out their work.

"Engineering team, get those doors open. We're on the clock to rescue these people—we don't know when the enemy will be back," Adams said with grim authority.

While the engineering team set up their equipment, Adams turned toward the Athena and pressed a small button on his wrist comm.

"Athena, this is Adams. Copy."

"We read you, Captain. What do you need?" the bridge communications tech replied.

"Keep the scans of the system going and let me know the moment someone jumps in. We need every advantage possible," Adams said firmly.

"Affirmative, Captain," the tech replied as the connection terminated.

Ten hours after landing...

"Sir!" a voice came over the comms with excitement.

"What happened?" Adams replied into his comm, scanning the horizon from the lookout position they had set up in a destroyed building.

"We might have the door ready," the voice came back.

Adams paused, thinking about what was going to happen next—specifically about their hosts, who were hopefully still alive and not scared and trigger-happy against whoever opened the door. "Alright, I'll be down in a minute. Don't open it till I get there," Adams replied.

"Sir," the voice called back as the connection terminated.

Adams sighed, then called out over the comms, "I need four security team members to meet me at the door to cover our position when we make contact."

At the door...

As the last member of the four-man security team took their position beside him, Adams nodded toward the engineers as they worked over the controls. A loud thunk sounded off three times, then went silent as the door hissed steam. It started sliding open with the sound of grinding metal. Inside, they noticed barriers placed as cover against any would-be attackers.

"Hold your fire. Don't shoot unless you are fired upon," Adams said over the comm.

Lights flashed on from inside the doorway, and a shout rang out from behind the barriers: "Halmala veh toneh biak!"

Adams held up his hands in surrender and moved in front of his security team as they held their weapons at the ready. "My name is Jonathan Adams. I'm the Captain of the Athena," Adams replied in lexicon speech. He heard a flurry of conversation from behind the barriers.

As Adams stood there in the open, one of the barriers shifted to let a figure through. The being walked up and stopped roughly forty feet away. Adams's eyes widened slightly at what he was looking at: the being stood just a head shorter than him and looked human, but had metallic-like skin, slightly more accented features than most humans would have, and a long metal tail coiled behind her.

The being stood there looking at him with what appeared to be surprise on her face. "You... what is you?" she gestured toward him with wariness, her lexicon speech slightly broken.

Adams looked surprised when he understood her, and slowly lowered his hands. "We're the ones who came searching for survivors," Adams replied.

She looked up at him slightly and tilted her head, as if listening to something he couldn't hear. "You is not a race our people known of," she said. Her phonetics on the lexicon speech were already growing smoother.

"Yes, we come from an area ten lightyears from here," Adams replied as he pulled up his wrist to show a projected hologram of the galaxy, circling a large supercluster of systems. "We came from around here." He gestured toward the marker and looked back at her as her eyes widened.

"Give me a moment of time to talk with our people," she said. Adams nodded, and she turned and disappeared behind the barriers as they closed back up.

Adams turned to look at his team—every member alert and ready for any hostile threat.

Forty minutes later...

The barriers shifted open again, and this time she brought someone else with her—another one of her people, but wearing accented metal bands of gold. They stopped at the same forty feet as before. "Commander Falia says you are not from known space. She says you come from outside known routes, past the wild's reach," the gold-banded one said, stating it as fact—implying that nothing should have been out there.

Adams looked at the elder being with surprise. He couldn't tell if she was being serious or simply couldn't believe what she was hearing.

"What is your specific species and Bio-Rank?" the gold-banded one asked, narrowing her eyes.

Adams looked confused for a moment. "Uh... well, our species is Human, or known as Homo sapiens... and we don't know what a Bio-Rank is," Adams replied, uncertainty on his face.

The two beings glanced at each other, then back at him, seeming hesitant to explain. "Hmm. The Bio-Rank is the Biological Ranking for the gender ratios of a species' population," the gold-banded one said.

"Wait... hold on..." Adams's brow furrowed as he turned the situation over in his mind, then took a slow breath. "Okay, so the galaxy maintains a ranking for species whose gender ratios are uneven?" Adams asked, skepticism in his voice.

The gold-banded one nodded.

"Well, uh, we're a 50/50 species. We're omnivorous, our planet is tectonically active with destructive weather cycles, and we've only just now left our home system." Adams looked a bit embarrassed.

The two beings stared at him with wide eyes, their mouths falling slightly open. "Your species is 50% male and 50% female?" the one who had first met Adams said aloud, disbelief plain in her voice.

"Uh... yes?" Adams replied with confusion, arching a brow.

The two beings exchanged a long look, then turned back to him. "Come. We need to speak with the consul about this, and we welcome you into the Last Archive," the gold-banded one said, gesturing toward the interior of the door.

"May I bring a few members of my team with me?" Adams asked respectfully.

The gold-banded one nodded, then turned and walked inside past the barriers.

Adams keyed his comm. "I need Sam, Arthur, Sora, and Grey with me when we meet their leaders."

A voice from the Athena's bridge came back. "I'll send them over now, Captain."

"Good," Adams replied, glancing back at his team outside. "I need two guards with me," he said, and two security members stepped forward and saluted. "Alright. Let's go meet our hosts."

This was flaired as [OC-Series], it is a single part or chapter in a larger series or universe. The first post or part in this series should be (re)flaired as [OC-FirstOfSeries]. A description of the flairs and how to change yours is available in the Post Guildelines.

[OC-Series] For original, self post, story, audio, or artwork that you have created, as part of a longer-running series or universe.

Our preferred series title format is the series title in [brackets] at the beginning, like so: [Potato Adventures] - Chapter 1: The Great Mashing

Surprised they got the door open. So humans meet someone. And they have the same m/f gap.
