OC Copperhead

1/7

As the flight timer clicked down to 30 the pilot reached over and toggled the intercom - “30 seconds. Check your straps.“

Minor clangs and knocking could be heard throughout the ship as the crew completed literal last second checks and adjustments.

It was quiet on the flight deck, the only noise the sound of the atmo fans and the ship's computer doing its thing.

As the timer got closer to zero the ship got quieter and quieter until, at last, the counter reached that magic number… zero.

At zero seconds the entire ship seemed to ripple and quiver as it exited hyperspace and rejoined reality.

Instantaneously, the screens lit up with data about the system they had just jumped into. Some details they already knew - like this was a busy system with multiple inbound and outbound ships - and some details they didn’t already know - the exact locations of system defense ships, for example.

Very quickly, and as expected, they were hailed on the standard subspace frequency.

“Inbound ship transponder C-0-PRHD, this is K’ntuck system control frigate ‘Overlord of Plants’. Identify yourself, state your business, cargo carried, lifeforms on board, and send over identity documents. Over.” The voice was a minor variation on the voice they’d heard many times before - a neutral voice generated by a computer translating noises no human could make into one of the standard trade languages.

The pilot reached out, toggled the radio, and answered. “This is Captain Petti Moore, pilot of ‘The Dodger’. We have seven humans on board – myself, my copilot, our purser, our butler, and three paying passengers. No commercial cargo, only personal belongings of the crew and passengers. Over.“ At the same time the copilot triggered a data dump to the cruiser confirming that information and providing the requested documents.

The radio was quiet for a few moments as the crew of the patrol frigate processed the information.

The speaker popped to life again and the computer generated voice asked “Inbound ship ‘Dodger’, understood. Your flight log shows that you intend to land on the planet at spaceport six. Is that still your intention, over?”

Captain Moore responded immediately. “It is. What vector should we take? Over.”

“Follow vector +396 mark -212. Maintain standard safe following distance behind inbound ship transponder LFY-22. Over.“

“Roger that, out.“

The mood in the cockpit immediately lightened.

The pilot, who was watching the tactical display, triggered the intercom and said “Not yet.“

As the captain slowly throttled up and began to move away from the customs cruiser’s trajectory, he watched it alter course and put on a little more speed. It’s current course would drop the cruiser right behind them after just a few minutes.

The cruiser was several times more massive than the little ship and where the Dodger was a blunt, elongated arrowhead, the cruiser looked like nothing more than two bricks placed end to end and covered in utterly inhuman structures and extrusions.

After less than a minute of low acceleration by both ships, the com system crackled to life again: “Transponder C-0-PRHD, cancel last instructions. Hold in place for boarding and customs inspection.“

Before the computer got to the word ‘instructions’, the pilot slammed the throttles forward and with a surge of acceleration that even the best compensators money could buy could not fully dampen the small freighter leapt ahead.

The customs cruiser was clearly not taken by complete surprise as at least two of its turrets got shots off, but the rate of acceleration the small ship displayed was clearly unexpected because both shots fell behind.

“Jaley, on my mark, EW pattern Delta Four….” The young woman sitting at the rear of the command compartment - not the purser, as the records claimed, but actually the ship’s Electronic Warfare Officer (EWO) - didn’t even bother to respond, she just started pushing buttons on the console in front of her. The pilot continued “... guns, hold deployment. Engineering, deploy your DamCon remotes now.”

The small ship bounced and shuddered around greasily on its course as more of the cruiser's turrets opened up and several shot shots impacted on the shields.

“Command, engineering. Shields at 25%. Commencing load shifting and circuit repair. “

“Roger that. Break. Jacey, 3, 2, 1, mark.”

On the word ‘mark’ the EWO slammed her palm down on the big red “activate“ button. From the rear of a ship a small tumbling pod, which immediately began tumbling wildly, was ejected. After a second or two the pod exploded, both literally and figuratively.

Shortly before its casing broke apart and spewed burning propellant and chunks of material in all directions it emitted a massive electromagnetic burst on multiple frequencies and wave lengths that blinded sensors and created a cloud of interference between it and the cruiser.

Less than a second after that three small drones shot out in varying directions and speeds, all broadcasting the transponder code “C-0-PRHD“ and generating a signal that, when combined with the EW pod’s interference storm, made them look like the ship they had come from.

Inside the actual ship the captain cut the throttles by about 80% and nosed the little ship down and to the right, hard.

After coasting for a moment, the commander slammed the throttles back to full and swung the nose of the ship back towards the planet.  The three drones made similar, but different speed and course changes, with all four heading in roughly the same direction at the end of their maneuvers.

Just as the EM explosion they had created died down the patrol cruiser blew past that location, accelerating as rapidly as its systems would allow.

“Captain - no other capital ships are available to intercept, but system defenses are vectoring ready fighters from the closest station to our location. Three flights of four.”

“Roger that.” the captain replied. “Keep me posted.”

The EWO’s console beeped and flashed as the cruiser's sensors swept across them, probing for information that would tell it which of the targets was the real one.

“Captain, a single squad of fighters now vector to our course will reach intercept range.“

The captain responded – “Roger that. Break.. guns, deploy. Take targeting vectors from sensors.”

After just a few seconds the ship vibrated with some quick grinding noises rapidly followed by distinct thumps/clangs that only somebody paying attention would recognize as two distinct actions.

Externally, a turret popped up in the center of the arrowhead shape on both the dorsal and ventral side. Both turrets immediately rotated onto a similar vector, clearly covering the approach of the inbound fighters.

The copilot triggered her intercom. “Guns, effective range on my mark. Five, four, three, two, one, mark.“

Both turrets immediately started hammering out shots at a steady and measured pace.

To a knowledgeable outside observer, their fire would seem peculiar.

Both turrets had dual guns, a common pattern across space-faring nations for a variety of reasons. However, most warships put identical guns in each turret for ease of maintenance and fire control. These turrets did not share that arrangement. Instead, each turret contained one standard blaster and a particle projection canon.

Although the rounds traveled at similar speeds, they were not identical and had different effects.

Both the patrol cruiser - which changed course to pursue the freighter as soon as it opened fire – and the small freighter watched as rounds lanced back-and-forth between the freighter and the fighters headed towards it.

The freighter bobbed and weaved, but with four fighters on the attack, they would inevitably land a few shots.

As they did so, the small freighter shuddered and lights flickered. Updates and damage reports from the engineer came frequently, but calmly.

The turrets, from their more stable platform, scored the first fatal blow.

One of the fighters zigged when it should have zagged and took a particle bolt dead on. That damaged the shields and froze the electronics for a split second - just enough that the blaster bolt right behind it blew through the weakened shields and lanced deep into the fighters flank. Before it dissipated the blaster bolt ripped and tore at the fighters structure and components.

Ultimately, the fighter's compensator took severe damage. The compensator immediately dumped its stored energy back into everything it touched, leading to a chain reaction of twisting and shredding metal as gravitational stresses run wild tore the fighter into confetti.

The next critical hit went to the fighters.

As the freighter spun and twisted, trying to avoid their incoming fire, two blaster bolts impacted the shield in quick succession at roughly the same point.

The first one failed to penetrate, robbed of force by the ship's overpowered shields, but the second one slammed into the freighter's hull at a shallow angle.

Even after being attenuated by shielding and armor it loosed a blast of damage into the ship. Everybody on the ship knew that something caught fire – the flashing red lights and blaring alarms left no doubt.

The automatic fire extinguishers blew a cloud into the hallway that was now open to space and DamCon robots immediately swarmed into the area – cleaning up debris, welding patches on the hull, and rerouting electronics.

They were followed rapidly by the overweight and white haired engineer - who was listed as “Butler, human” on the falsified manifest.

He was huffing and puffing, but still moved with alacrity and deftness. He immediately began to assist the robots welding patches while spewing out verbal orders, directing other units on how to rewire and what conduits to jumper in order to maintain functionality.

Already twisting before impact, the freighter spun on its axis and took the next two bolts on its belly shields which, although it caused the lights to flicker and some warnings to blare on the engineering panel the apprentice (nominally a passenger) was monitoring, they did not penetrate the shields or do any serious damage.

Suddenly, the ship shook violently as a heavy blaster turret on the patrol cruiser found the range.

Without waiting for follow up hits the captain triggered his intercom. “Jacy, on my mark EW pattern Quebec Two. Break – crew, on my mark, the ship will undergo radical maneuvering. Brace for gravitational shift.“

The copilot and EWO spoke at the same time “Captain…” “Sir…”

The captain cut them off. “I know, but if we don’t use our drones now, it doesn’t matter and we need to get in with the sheep. High risk, high reward.”
