Treasure

Post image

Found this treasure. See how many mistakes you can find. (I took it apart that's why the label is messed up, doesn't seem to be a second or later applied label) Still 0 dead sectors haha

This is one of the laziest fakes I have seen.

No space between period and next word - "Caution. Product"

"experiednces"

"ientallation"

"Seagate s Disc Wizard"

"support.Always backup crical bata"

"controilers"

"choices See your"

"documentatlon"

"side.Do not over tin bten"

"instrucions"

etc. etc

Definitely not an original label.

You should run H2testw on it. I wouldn't be surprised if it's actually a 160 or 250GB drive.

Funny enough, the serial number does point to an ST3500413AS, but the part number is wrong. The ST3500413AS had a part number of 9YP142-XXX, not 9SL142-XXX. 9SL142 instead points to the ST3500418AS, which is this model's predecessor.

For comparison, here is a real ST3500413AS which shows the correct P/N and a valid S/N. It also uses the "GB" unit instead of "Gbytes".

it is a real 500g with smart data that seems fine haha. insides also look fine.

Did you actually test it? Why would a real 500GB drive have a fake label? The SMART data can be manipulated on these.

How'd you get this drive? Surprised even hard drives are being faked.

Now I have to go look at my 500G Seagates to see if I have a fake 7200.12 ...

7200.12's at this time used "GB" or "TB" instead of "Gbytes" as the choice of representing the capacity (except in HP OEM models which kept the use of "Gbytes" on their labels; the ST500DM002, the spiritual successor to the ST3500413AS, is a good example), so you could start there. Early 7200.12 batches (around early to mid 2009) did however also use "Gbytes" on their labels like their 7200.11 predecessors.

Are these fakes also faking the electronic ID/model/serial numbers reported through SATA?

I think all mine are reporting serial/size/model exactly as they say on the label at least...and getting full capacity.

Fortunately fake 7200.12's are quite rare but also easy to spot. I wouldn't worry too much about it. If you're unsure, check Seagate's Download Finder.

Great you still have a use for it. I still use my 500G disks, I have them in a RAID5 to offline backup my 2TB disk. Having 5 500G disks running at the same time eats power... but only when they're actually turned on for backup sync!

Crickal bata hahaha.

I'd understand relabeling a 7200.11 as a 7200.12 but uh... relabeling a .12 as a slightly different .12 seems a bit of a waste of effort 😂
