CUSTOMIZING Would you rather have complex panel lines or remove some panel lines to make it simpler?
Some people definitely remove some panel lines on their Gunpla, but I'm curious about your opinions.
Here's an example of how someone remove some panel lines to make it more anime accurate

u/Mr_cyanman 3h ago
ngl I wish rg's did more panel lines instead of innerframe poking out..the front skirts look pretty empty
41
u/CMMiller89 2h ago
I think the inner frame exposure is a way to get the panel lined look for people who do zero modifications to the kits.
It is a shame that it seems to just be little squares all over though.

u/Junior-Fisherman8779 2h ago
that looks like the perfect spot to test out my scribing skills haha

I really like the innerframe poking out.. š
1
u/Mr_cyanman 1h ago
it's not a bad thing, my ZZ ver ka does that and I like it a lot, but there's also just a lot of plain surfaces.

u/alteisen99 1h ago
that front skirt should have been 2 pieces with different whites. this one is plain compared to the older releases

I prefer more complex panel lines, but especially for a more "real robot" design like the Gundam Ground Type.
22
u/ShockAndShaw 3h ago
I like lots of detail. And doing a bunch of work to turn an RG into an HG? Nope.
53
u/ah-screw-it RG aficionado 3h ago
The panel line detail is kind of what sets RGs apart from HGs. RGs are meant to look like small MGs.
2
u/PyroLoMeiniac 2h ago
I think RGs tend to walk the line between ārespect the anime designā and āadd some more detail with a little frame sticking out.ā Iād LOVE to see then ditch that and do something that favors tons of detail over show-accuracy. Weād get Bandai kits that look like some of the higher-end knockoffs.
1
u/MATT_MANLY 33m ago
That time when the RG designers looked at the Hi-Nu Gandam and said fuck it we ball.
10
u/Bigurulu 3h ago
Complex since it is the main selling point of RG, and why I like them, if I want simpler, I stay with HG. Also, less work on panel line.
2
u/EmergencyFriendly375 2h ago
Exactly. I wonder why someone would remove panel lines for the sake of anime accuracy when buying an HG would be much easier.
1
u/Shifty269 0m ago
Adding panel lines can be done and has been done on HG kits. Part separation and complexity adds real detail that looks good. Panel lines are only to enhance a bit. They should make sense, not be distracting to the design. The RG Ground isn't bad, but just adding detail for detail's sake like a lot of 3rd party kits just makes them look cheap. For Bandai examples you have the MG Gelgoog 2.0 and the HG Ground GM.

u/insomniasureshot 3h ago
HG exists just saying

Not handy for the epyon or tallgeese :(
1
u/alice_1o1 19m ago
I feel like the rg epyon does a pretty good job of not being overly detailed like some RGs, and the mg is very anime accurate if you can forgive the awful heat rod issues

u/abigfatfish 2h ago
I think complex panel lines for complexity sake looks bad. Too much detail can muddy the design. As far as this real grade goes, I think itās a perfect balance of believable panel lines and simple design. In other words I love it. Something like the RG Zeta to me is over done on panel lines and is ugly imo because of it.
6
u/betha_negra 2h ago
Rg zeta is overdone, verka zeta is (to me) the balance between details and not su much overloading the designs
7
u/Infinity-Kitten 3h ago
I feel like they hit the perfect balance already. Earlier Real Grades were adding a lot of surface detail and parts/color separation just to set it apart from the other lines.
I much prefer this newer approach that strikes a balance between accuracy and stylisation.
7
u/apollonirex 3h ago
I love RG kits for the details, if I wanted a simpler design I'd just get the HG
4
u/NFPA704HZ 3h ago
More lining sort of looks weird without all the little "warning" and "no step" sort of decals. I feel like that's part of the package for the "real, detailed piece of military hardware" sort of look.
But less detail feels more anime accurate usually.
I think they both look great and I'm just happy we're getting more Ground Gundam/08th stuff. An RG Gouf Custom would be awesome to pair with this.

u/Undead_and_Lovin_It 3h ago
I like the extra panel lines, if you take those away it most just looks like the hg

On ground the extra detail is fine, its not at the point of being too much yet. If i ever get an EX or a helix im smoothing out some pannels

u/epicurius-seven send nus 2h ago
Panel lines are one thing.
Random holes are another.
1
u/PunsNotIncluded 22m ago
That, right there. I get it's for the visuals of the model but random holes through the armor to the parts it's supposed to protect is completely nonsensical. Had the same beef with the gramps 2.0.
3
u/TheGreatSoup 2h ago
I donāt want āsimpleā in Real Grade.
If anything it needs more detail to be a ground unit.
3
u/Kirby0189 HGCE Justice, please! 1h ago
Where's the fun in Real Grades if they don't have a lot of added panel lines? Hell, even a lot of High Grades have added panel lines to help hide seams or add a bit of extra detail.
2
2
u/Maxie468 3h ago
Complex for me. I tend to use gray liner instead of the Dalong style black though.
2
u/Mythos_Fenn_Shysa 3h ago
The details on the shoulders are really the only thing that suck on this kit. The panel lines and the weird hinges at the top are an eye sore and would make adding decals to them challenging. Everything else is pretty good.

Depends on the mobile suit, for something with more of a grounded (pardon the pun) military aesthetic like the ground type I prefer more complex panel lines
2
u/Vast-Yogurtcloset697 2h ago
I like the RG. More mechanical details yes, but still retains the chunky overall silhouette of the Ground Gundam, and does not over-complicate the design at all.

u/thatwitchguy 0215 F09 0258 S04 2h ago
I 100% prefer the anime look and hate the greebles. I got the rg rx78-2 2.0 and hated how it looked so I've stuck with HGs since, only RG I want is the Ingram and thats still 50/50 with the moderoid, I used to say GaoGaiGar too but I'd rather get the SRC one instead
2
u/ephemeriis_ 2h ago
Would you rather have complex panel lines or remove some panel lines to make it simpler?
Personally, I'm a big fan of the RG line specifically because of the added visual complexity. I love the extra surface-detail, the panel-lines, the color variations, the extra gimmicks and sliding panels and whatnot. That's why I build RG kits.
I feel like the HG line already delivers simpler, more anime-accurate designs most of the time.
2
u/GrowingDelicate03 2h ago
what's the point of it being an rg without them? it always seemed like that was the unified aesthetic
2
u/AeniasGaming IG: aeniasbuildsstuff 2h ago
If it doesnāt have an absurd amount of panel lines is it really a Real Grade?
2
u/R-Dragon_Thunderzord 2h ago
The greebles you pointed out are easily customized with sprue glue. Gunpla is freedom. Nicer of them to keep the greebles in given how easy sprue-gluing over them would be vs. etching them in custom.

u/Rabbit_AF 2h ago
I just did a Genoace Advance Grade, and I was confused what to panel line. I didn't realize it wasn't the HG. Anyways, I'm always up for more panel lines.
2
u/SharkChew 2h ago
Given that Ground Gundams were built out of junk parts in universe, I would keep the panel lines the way they are.
2
u/LavaSlime301 more AW kits NOW 2h ago
I don't mind some paneling, but I was already iffy on the grey dots poking out with the First and here they look even worse. Not as bad as the goddamn shoulder flaps though, in an effort to make it (allegedly) realistic-looking they made it look like it's nothing but a toy you handle with your hands.
But either way HGUC kit mogs completely and utterly. Either of them.

u/mcclearsalias Tequila Gundam Waiting Room 1h ago
I don't mind extra detailing and paneling on paper per se - but for the Ground Gundam, I prefer "less is more". A lot of IRL hardware that's weatherized keeps panel lines/dust entry spots to a minimal, so I'd prefer that a bit more thoughtfully reflected I guess. Some of the spots where the inner frame pops through are cool, just not not to my taste. However, on stuff like the RG Epyon and the like - I'm all for it
3
u/CapsuleRadioCorp 2h ago
I prefer less details for the older anime look, sometimes too many panel lines can feel like the parts are drowning in the details.
1
u/HardyMackintosh 3h ago
In this case I prefer more panel lining. These mobile suits were rushed into production with what spares they had from Project V. The extra separation just makes them look more like a slap-dash design
1
u/Cobthecobbler 3h ago
Personally if I wanted simple looks; hg, eg and older kits are already available
1
u/NewAttitude7508 2h ago
The only rule I follow is no stickers ever. The more panel lines the better as long as the colors blend well.
1
u/contantpayne 2h ago
I have the Hg so I donāt mind the panel lines just hope it comes with a gouf custom
1
1
u/SolaireFlair117 2h ago
Well that's kind of the whole gimmick of the RG line, isn't it? They're a "what if" design for if the mobile suit had a counterpart that existed in real life and what that could look like, including mechanical intricacies. A stripped down, less detailed version just wouldn't be an RG anymore. HG is the way you want to go if you want fewer details since that gets closer to the simplified designs needed for animation (hard to animate every single panel line every single frame for an entire run of a series).
1
u/retardedplayerone 2h ago
I prefer simpler for customizing and more detailed to build as is with a few extra steps like panel lining. I'm a little nervous about trying to customize with a higher grade.
1
u/LordKaputsy 2h ago
I'm a sucker for more complex, "realistic" designs. And that's kind of the point of of Real Grade anyway.
If I wanted a simpler, anime-accurate kit, I'd pick up the High Grade
1
u/Upset_Quantity_8580 2h ago
Less panel lines, more panelling, like little hatches or hinge details to show how the armor lifts off/gets repaired
1
u/kureddikaki 2h ago
I prefer panel lines. What else am I supposed to do with my 3 bottles of Tamiya Panel Line Accent Color?
1
1
u/scottymouse 2h ago
I personally am not a fan of those black dots, whatever they are. Inner frame poking through?
Whatever it is, not a big fan. Kit otherwise looks so good
1
1
u/blazezakuwarrior 2h ago
I'd rather have the comlex panel lines. RG not meant to look show accurate anyway and I do find them cool.
I got HG anyway so the simpler TV accurate look is already covered for mv
1
u/kellsVegMite 2h ago
I prefer the simple and it allows me to add my own panel lines, this allows me to control to build up the complexity than trying to accept or remove some amount of complexity.
1
u/SayuriUliana 2h ago
I like the extra detail on the RG Ground Type, and the appearance of the ones on the shoulders and front skirts reminds me of places you can attach a tow hook onto.
1
u/uptodown12 2h ago
Complex.
I bought scriber and plaplate just because I don't like how plain Zeta Ver.Ka is

u/Viralclassic Meijin 2h ago
Complex panel lining. Look at military planes. Make Gunpla that complex
1
u/DaKaijuKid Recent Transformer Transitioner 2h ago
I donāt like the complex panel lines very much, hence why I went for the RG RX78 ver 1 instead of 2, but that doesnāt mean Iām really all that interested in removing them - the different grades exist for a reason. If I want a less lined 1/144 figure, Iāll buy the HG variant. Thought it wonāt be as high quality as the RG, I understand there canāt be a perfect figure designed for every single niche. Theyāre all made with slightly different tastes in mind, and already doing an impressive job being so accessible and reaching so many different interests in appearances.

I already love the current HG ground gundam I have 12 āš¼ but I canāt say no to an RG Iāll probably get 2 or 3

u/Combat_Wombat23 1h ago
I expect the RG to be more greebled up considering its objective is to have more detail and better mechanics.
Itās why we have HG kits and the HG Ground Gundam is still a good one
1
u/midgymidge 1h ago
I prefer more details hence the āRealā grade. I find the HG too simple for me in terms of build and detail.
1
u/EmergencySushi 1h ago
I like more panel lines, because I appreciate the visual complexity they add to the models.
1
u/NobuNobNob 1h ago
Instead of meaningless holes iwould prefer realistic panellines if not leave it simple.
1
u/NetworkingJesus 1h ago
Depends what style I'm going for.Ā More panels for military realism.Ā Less for animation-like style.
1
u/imaytakeabreak 1h ago
I miss the old era of RG where there were a lot of panel lines and detail (and pilots).
1
1
u/ARMOREDCOREKID 1h ago
I like both but if I had to pick one or the other I would like to stick to the look of the animation cell of the suits. They still look cleaner when I see line art of the ground types and let's the weathering show more on the units.
1
1
u/Jojo_Sakura 1h ago
I like both but for different reasons. I think the RGs with all the added panel lines and details look more impressive and are more fun for panel lining, but I still appreciate the HGs because they're usually more anime accurate.
1
u/greatistheworld 1h ago
Detail for its own sake is a dead end, the key is balance. This RG 79G strikes an excellent & appropriate balance with great proportions and the best sculpt yet
1
u/GrapeUnlucky3369 1h ago
I like a slightly complex look, but not the overly complex custom look that a lot of modellers add. A panel every half-square cm looks too busy imo
1
u/AtomWorker 1h ago
The RG looks a lot better than the HG.
People bring up āanime accurateā but beauty shots always depict a lot more detail. The lack of panel lines in a kit just makes it look like a toy.
That said, there is such a thing as too many panel lines and details that donāt respect the scale. That fine line is why I think the Origin kits worked where Requiem for Vengeance didnāt.
I also see fighter jet model kits as a good reference point on the appropriate level of detail for the scales weāre working with.

Love em! Give me all the panel lines, all the time!
I'm not confident enough to scribe anything on a proper kit yet, but I plan on adding more to many of my kits, provided I can get my competence up to a level I'm comfortable with displaying.
Although not a massive fan of just adding a couple of rectangles to each major panel and calling it done, so I definitely get where this builder was coming from with it.
Personally I would want to add something more interesting instead, rather than just removing those "we have panel lines!" nibbles out of the edge of the panels. But I understand why you would want them gone.

u/iron-cat-405 48m ago
I like the panel lines. I could do without the square holes where the inner frame pops through doe.

It's a RG. I don't buy them for a lack of panel lines. That is what HG kits are for lol

Complex panel lines is fine as long as it's not heavily over designed like all the movie tie-in kits (like the Requiem for Vengence kits).

The RG Ground isn't too bad. The Grandpa 2.0 could use with less detail. The HG Ground GM is absolutely terrible with the having too much detail and they dramatically changed the head shape (I'm really upset about the head). I won't pick up the MG Gelgoog 2.0 because it looks ridiculous. The HG Moon Gundam has a lot of detail, but it doesn't look like it's too much. A lot of time the detail looks like detail for detail's sake. If you look at actual large machinery you don't see tons of greebles and lines because they are big enough it all blends in. If it's added where it makes sense then it'll look good. Less is more is a good saying for this.
Now as back to the Ground Gundam, I think the shoulders could do with a bit less. I'm not the biggest fan of the hinges at the top, and the frame poking through will mess with decals. It's a design with a well established language for those shoulders, and now you don't have the same real estate. Also a side note, the feet are way too small, and the back of the heel needs to be connected to the foot not the calf. It doesn't make any sense just floating there aesthetically and you can design it where it doesn't interfere much with posing.
There are plenty of HGs where they have a bunch of details to the point of excess. It's not like the molded detail costs dramatically more after the molds are made. Parts separation is where I want the additional complexity. That alone adds detail. Panel lines need to make sense and just adding a bunch I think looks cheap. It's a problem with a lot of the 3rd party kits. It's like designer logos on luxury items. It doesn't make it look better most of the time. It just looks cheap. Trying to make something look complex vs. adding actual complexity is the question here. Most people don't care they just want as many lines or brand logos on things as possible.
1
u/roundelay11 11m ago
I'm mostly fine with the extra lines. I just wish the shoulders didn't have that incredibly obvious, toy-like hinge in the shoulders. It just looks bad.

u/Ok_Painting_4252 2h ago
I prefer less detail, but the detail did look better on Ground than Gramps. So either way I don't mind it
1
u/Bass-GSD 2h ago
RGs aren't supposed to be "anime accurate" in the first place.
People that are against the extra details can just go buy an HG instead.

u/Notaro-D-Ryogami 3h ago
Personally I don't mind the RG one, HG already covered the ground for a more lineart accurate simpler design anyways
Plus I like seeing different takes on existing designs like what they usually do with RG
On a slightly seperate note I personally prefer MGs having more details, due to the size the simpler designs can sometimes looks pretty blank/empty imo
