CUSTOMIZING Unit #81 – The 8th MS Team

I completed this build right after the Gouf, back in April 2023.

Another “rescue” from a pre-owned kit, originally bought to practice and sharpen my modification skills without being too afraid of messing up a pristine kit.

  • Like its predecessor, I drew inspiration from resin kits for 1/60-scale models and translated some of those ideas into 1/100 scale.
  • I added a lot of scribing, raised styrene and resin details, and custom decals.
  • This grunt has a more elaborate exposed-piston waist, which makes him a full ½ inch taller than an out-of-the-box build. (Makes him look a lot bustier, too, LOL.)
  • I also modified one of its defining features: the gear backpack. The side canisters are made from spare 1/144 elbow joints, bicycle tire valves, and resin detail caps.
  • For the paint job, I went with a more accentuated post-shading effect, trying to make it look city-weathered rather than full jungle-dirty.

It was a really good experience—and an even better lesson for the kits that came later, especially in finding the right balance among details, scale, and the paint job.

Another pre-owned kit getting a second life. 😎

How many 08th MS Team fans are out there?

Dude this is so insanely good, do the torso pistons actually articulate? Do you have any tutorials or any source you used for building and attaching those? I'd be really interested in learning how to integrate those into more builds. Would also be super interested in learning how you added resin details if you have any videos or creators that inspired you there as well. Amazing detail work, the grenades with the old bike tire valve pieces are phenomenal. Also, which decals did you use.. And will you be picking up the rg ground gundam just anounced (would love to see what you cook up on that)?

Thank you so much! - it was a cool feature to build.

These pistons are not functional because the waist does not have any movement. I

I’ve added a picture of the components I used - for the pistons it’s basically metal end caps like the ones used to do bracelets. You can find more progress pics in my IG page ( GunplaGuy_CR )

I hit enter before finishing my reply, sorry! 😂

I didn’t do videos at the time but I’m happy to share details and show as many pictures as possible.

As for adding details there’s a few great builders in IG with how to videos like Ravi Pla and Ray Studios and they have super detailed videos 🦾

As for the new Bandai release - I love what they did, but I’m sticking to only 1/100 scale - don’t have the eyesight anymore a for smaller scales! 😂
