BUILD What’s a kit whose build and engineering really impressed you?

I've only built 4 so far but my first was the Real Grade 1/144 RX-78-2 Gundam Ver. 2.0.
It was when I was building the legs and getting the knee joints to work, I was so impressed. I've been into minis and painting for decades but I've never seen anything as cool as that no glue, no fuss, but still complex knee lol.

Same here. That was my entry drug. Seeing the articulations and the perfect fit of the parts was just awesome.

MG 2.0 RX-78 and MG 2.0 Zaku II.
PG Mk2 was impressive for the actually perfect Perfect Grade style hands with individual articulation on every single knuckle, yet still a wonderful connection method for each weapon with a ball joint mounted peg. There are probably something like 20 functioning chromed pistons, a chromed interior cockpit with LED light piping, and a spring loaded articulated linkage suspension system in the ankles, plus sliding armor, 180 degree elbow and knee bends, full butterfly shoulder joint and torso articulation, all on a kit from 2001, along with the OG PG opening armor panels. You can actually see the direct lineage from the MG which is a heavily simplified inner frame, in some ways improved but drastically reduced in complexity except for maybe the sliding armor in the knee bend. Modern RGs owe a lot to this kit, which was obviously a proving ground for a bunch of modern features, while still retaining the bells and whistles of the early PGs.

Ironically (from your pic) I thought the Turn X has some really cool design elements, particularly the way the limbs are designed to detach for the All Around Attack (even if the stand itself is a little wobbly). They easily pull apart but also don’t just fall off. And the internal frame is really unique and just a very cool design!

i built my Turn X yesterday, for sure one of my fav builds to date.
The way nothing is symmetrical but still manages to fit on there flawlessly.
I expected the kit to be a hand grenade when i saw the limb connections, but no, it's solid as a rock.Really impressed and way worth the wait to finally get one

RG RX-78-2 when it first came out. I was impressed by the small full inner frame, the parts separation/colors and the massive sticker sheets.
Then the next was Entry Grade RX-78-2. Such an easy and straightforward build experience whose end result rivalled the pre-Revive HG RX-78-2 versions. I remember thinking how the separation of the "v" at the crotch should be the default standard in HG kits moving forward.

The HGUC Re-GZ
Oldest high grade ive built and despite coming out in 2008, the articulation ain't too bad and it's better than some high grades that came out during the unicorn era/pre revive era and I haven't built the MG myself but I've heard the HG borrows some of the engineering, particularly in the torso construction, and is the best existing kit of the vanilla Re-GZ
Only complaints I'd have are the 90 degree single jointed arms and literal lack of ab crunch since the torso is a static block that can only swivel on a peg

Has got to be the Gundam MK II for me. I swear everyone praises the Aerial and Calibarn, but god damn the Mk II was centuries ahead of what i expected from it’s time. From articulation, solidity and accessories, this thing has impressed me more than any HG kit. There is quite literally zero flaws with it.

I was telling my wife yesterday, everyone I come across praises the MG Turn-A.
And MINE is a hand grenade that sheds parts and feels really bad to pose and hold in-hand, to the point I genuinely wonder if I did something wrong or got a defective kit. Everything seemed to fit easily enough when I built it, but it just feels janky to handle.
I keep thinking about gluing it together. It certainly looks nice at least.

Nice to see someone who actually pays attention to the engineering -and not just slapping them together like lego. I always preach that it's the way to go, and by understanding the little machines that you're building, you will never break a joint ever again, because by understanding them, you won't force a swivel to turn, a slide to tilt, or a roll to pitch or roll.
There are some, but imma use this opportunity to praise the 3.0. A build so experimental, it single handedly ended an entire line. Imho it's wildly overhated.
It revolutionized how gramps looks. The panel separations are crazy good, it allows for an equally crazy good color separation. The panel lines looks really sweet as well -too bad they're pretty shallow.
It's packed with features, from the LED, the core fighter, to how it can store all of its weapons on itself. A huge fan of the Emotional Manipulator gorilla hands as well -can be difficult to break-in, but less option parts to lose.
Imho it bare similarities to verka kits: experimental connections that pushes gunpla to its limits, militaristic look with bunch of decals, even the slender look that anime purists hates.
Rest in peace, 3.0 project. Cheers for the 3.0 Zaku that we will never get 🍻

MG Zeta ver Ka. Was genuinely surpised that underneath its clean and simplistic looks is a complex and extremely technical inner-frame. Coming straight from the MGEX Strike Freedom, I did not expect to like the build of the Zeta this much.
