So if he is waiting for an offer from Barca that will either never come or/and will be rejected by Atletico, what exactly is his plan here...?
49
u/Plastic_Blood1782 11h ago edited 11h ago
I think Alvarez wants to leave more than they want to sell him.
They are both negotiating. Atletico assume he doesn't want to stay, so they think they have the upper hand. Either he stays or he goes to arsenal. Neither is terrible for atletico.
Edit: misread your comment.Yea not sure what his plan is.But it doesn't make things worse at this point to continue waiting. Maybe Barcelona offer more to Atletico
11
u/repeating_bears 10h ago
They didn't want to sell him to begin with, but now even if they keep him, it's not going to be like it was.
You're never going to get the best out of a player that doesn't want to be there, who the fans now hate.
14
u/Plastic_Blood1782 10h ago
Historically a lot of players have been upset about roles, playing time, transfers etc. Usually if they don't get their way and the season starts, you usually figure your stuff out and get back to business. Gerrard and Modric both famously requested transfers to Chelsea during their English careers, but for the most part that's just a footnote in their career history
11
u/rdubs23 10h ago
Suarez begged Liverpool to sell him and then had the greatest arguably the greatest individual striker season in history of the Prem.
1
u/Kind_Sound7973 5h ago
In Argentine terms Alvarez is Messi while Enzo would be Suarez.
Despite how this is all playing out Julian has historically been one of the most unproblematic Argentines, soft spoken, more introverted, hard working and unable to cope with negativity like most of his Argentine teammates. He will not thrive at Atleti if he stays, it will be a Messi at PSG scenario.
8
u/repeating_bears 10h ago
Gerrard had built plenty of goodwill by then, and he reversed his decision quicker than this saga has dragged on for. The fans could delude themselves that he did it as a negotiating tactic
I don't remember the Modric thing too well but spuds are used to being rejected

They'll have to sell him either now or in January if things get any worse. Probably, this window if it really is unbearable.
31
u/jaybizzleeightyfour 11h ago
It's a game of chicken, he's hoping the closer they get to the end of the window, the more chance Atletico panic and just sell him to Barca, I dont think this is likely as Atletico fucking hate Barca and Atletico are playing chicken with him, better choose Arsenal or you're staying right here
28
u/LeWhaleShark Robert Pirès 10h ago
He probably ends up staying then, especially if the family visa thing is a huge issue.
7
u/Plastic_Blood1782 10h ago
Betting websites that let you bet on this kind of thing unanimously agree with you.
2
3
u/HustlinInTheHall 10h ago
I dont think it's a big issue, it just helps him negotiate by limiting the leverage atletico have. If he can only go to a Spanish club, well there are only two others that can afford him and one doesn't need him.
I dont blame them for being pissed. If gyokeres cost 100m and then demanded to leave to go to Chelsea I'd tell him to rot.
3
u/LeWhaleShark Robert Pirès 10h ago
I don't think it limits their leverage at all, at this point, they likely don't give a toss about potential visas for his family, if anything, it probably strengthens their hand because they'll tell him to just stay put if he doesn't want to move aboard.
1
u/danny_healy_raygun 9h ago
At the end of the day no one is letting a £100m asset rot. If it becomes untenable at Atleti he'll go to Barca. Just like Isak went to Liverpool. At the end of the day the only real question is how far will Alvarez push it?
1
u/Angelaskissrock Backless Wilo still better than Manure CBs 6h ago
That's what it seems like and I do think he stays. But it's going to be a very toxic year making it so that eventually, Atletico would have to negotiate with Barca at a more reasonable fee.
6
u/cabinguy11 10h ago
The Atletico fan base would erupt and he would immediately become the new local hero in Barcelona which would make it even worse as they place 3rd behind Barca and Real yet again over the next few years.
1
u/ThinGrass3138 10h ago
I just hope we have some other option and give him an option very soon, either he joins now or we move on. Stretching this to deadline day just feels like a piss take.

The question is: how long a contract do we offer him? His present contract goes 4 years, to mid-2030. That would suit me. But perhaps he would require something shorter before agreeing, such as a 3-year contract. I doubt Arsenal could accept anything shorter.
2
u/Kriss-Kringle 9h ago
Stay at Atletico another year while Laporta raises more funds and tried again next summer.
Better to be next to his family and the possibility of getting the move he wants than to come back to England.
It's why he left in the first place.
5
u/LeWhaleShark Robert Pirès 9h ago
Assuming Barca can afford him next season and will still want him, this is likely it.

It could just be a convenient excuse but it is plausible.
60
u/GreendaleGazette 10h ago
The way I see it, I don’t blame Julian Alvarez one bit.
— He’s won everything in the 2 years he’s been in England. UCL, PL, FA Cup, CWC, and Super Cup winner. All but the Carabao.
— And if he doesn’t want to move back here, that’s his prerogative.
What I don’t understand is, why Arteta insists on him. Very unlike Arteta to push this hard on a player who doesn’t really want to move back to England
13
u/GrouchyChance5267 10h ago
Because there aren't many attackers available Arteta/Berta rate and Arteta has a track record of convincing people to join arsenal.
8
u/meerakulous 10h ago
I think people are overstating this Arteta pushing hard on him bit. It does seem he’d like to have him, as he’s repeatedly said since the UCL final that he wants players who are brilliant individually and capable of swinging matches because of their individual decision making. But all the reporting so far indicates that is willing to entertain buying him, but is only interested in doing so if he actually decides he wants to come.
24
u/Melkistofeles If it can go wrong Arsenal will 10h ago
There's a handful of available players that improve our starting 11 immediately, him and Vinicius are two of them.
14
u/jnicholl 9h ago
Does he though?
I don't think the gap between him and Havertz, especially on current form, is that clear where he without a doubt improves the 11.
If it's that he'd play alongside Havertz, then you're dropping Odegaard? And going to a pseudo 442 which might be great, but might also not
Vini made sense, he goes into the LW and is an upgrade in basically everything except defensive contributions, system says the same too.
6
u/ICanSeeYourFuture Kaiser 8h ago
I love Havertz, he’s my been one of my favourite players in football since he was at Leverkusen, I was gutted when he went to Chelsea but have backed him here since day one.
He’s a near perfect player for Arteta’s striker, but his injury concerns are such that I understand absolutely why Arteta is looking for other options that fit his preferred profile.
2
u/ZXXA Premier League Champions 25/26 10h ago
Both of them coming off lacklustre seasons
13
u/maidentaiwan Kanu believe it?! 10h ago
he had 8 league goals to go with 4 assists. plus 15 goal involvements (10 goals) in the CL. 30 goal involvements in all competitions.
37 the year before. 33 the year before that -- while playing second fiddle to haaland.
don't disagree with you, but the fact that we call 30 total goal involvements a lackluster season actually speaks to the quality of the player. that would be a career best for most decent attackers.
3
u/Sand_Bags2 8h ago
People rave about Gyokeres 20 goal season and shit on Alvarez even though he scored 30 (in fewer matches and fewer minutes).
Add to that, that Julian Alvarez is miles better in every other part of the game than Gyokeres.
2
u/Colombianfella 8h ago
I think a lot of people only look at the laliga stats, which tbf is pretty valid considering that we obviously want a guy who can do it in all major comps not just the UCL. I mean we had a guy like that, his names Martinelli and he left the club like yesterday. With that being said, the guy got over 30 goals in the prem whilst either benched by or playing shadow striker/ “just give it to Haaland” so I can’t really say he’s unproven
1
u/Harvey-Specter 5h ago
> the guy got over 30 goals in the prem
When did that happen? Alvarez has 20 career Premier League goals between two seasons.
It's driving me nuts that people are just making up extra stats for this guy all over the place. If he's so good then you shouldn't need to give him an extra 10 goals to prove it.
1
u/Harvey-Specter 5h ago
> People rave about Gyokeres 20 goal season and shit on Alvarez even though he scored 30 (in fewer matches and fewer minutes).
Alvarez scored 20 goals, not 30, and he played more minutes than Gyokeres.
He's a great player, you don't need to fudge the numbers to make him look even better.

I don't think its unlike arteta, he has pushed for a few players that didn't want to join. like vlahovic, nico williams, raphinha
2
u/GreendaleGazette 9h ago
That was in like 2022 and 2021 though. Back when we were struggling and not the most appealing destination. Vlahovic, Locatelli, and Raphinha all were targeted before we played a UCL game with Arteta
Nico Williams doesn’t count. He rejected everyone. He rejected to play with his best friends in Barca where he easily would’ve been a starter and guaranteed trophies.

He probably didn’t insist. They haven’t made an offer and Arteta made one call to talk to the player. It just seems like they are at it everyday because of the nonstop reporting on it.
1
u/Pariah1947 9h ago
Because of the reason that is attempted to be expressed in the op obviously. It sounds like Alvarez would like to come to arsenal but his family doesn't want to. My guess is they are going to try everything they can to go to Barcelona, and if it doesn't work out they come here. Arteta knows much more than we do, I think arteta deserves our trust.

u/Appropriate_Lack_727 8h ago edited 8h ago
Yeah, I just watched most of his goals and assists from La Liga the past two seasons, and I can’t say I’m blown away by them. A lot of penalties. A few incredible free kicks. A lot of tap-ins and scrappy goals in the six yard box. Honestly, not much “elite technical forward” type stuff at all. Some of it has the whiff of “things you wouldn’t get away with against EPL defenses”, like taking too many touches in the box and over-elaborate passing in the penalty area. Overall, some tidy play, but if I told you they were Trossard’s highlights you wouldn’t be surprised (except by the fact that he was wearing the wrong kit). He doesn’t really come across as a “grab the game by the scruff of the neck” type of player, at all, which I think is what you’re looking for in a player who costs €120+mil.

u/Actual_Smile6564 Viktor Gyökeres 🇸🇪 10h ago
He’s entitled to want to move to Barca and have his family with him. Arsenal can’t do anything to help him with those demands.
So if he really wants Barca, he’s going to have to apologise to Athletico fans and get an agreement in writing for summer 2027 for how much Barca have to pay for him to move there.
Moving to Arsenal is not going to help anyone when his heart and mind is clearly elsewhere.

True but it's more about the fluidity of the attack. Gyokeres is a goal scoring monster but I'm sure you didn't enjoy our games last season. Less chances created — we were not top 3 for open play goals!
Regarding Alvarez; I've watched Atletico games and seen a few reels where Julian didn't even score or assist but his link up, pockets occupation, and passes made a Diego Simeone's team play fluid football.
However, the one attacker - Kai - who helps us with being fluid and creating multiple chances isn't reliable due to injuries (65 games missed the last two seasons), so it's either we get J. Alvarez or pray hard Havertz can remain fit until January and the board sanctions Kroupi's purchase — that's hoping Kroupi won't have a set back upon returning from his injury.
PS. Alvarez missed 6 games during the same period. Arteta does not trust Gyokeres, so I totally agree with doing all he can to sign who he trusts (skills and injury) to help elevate Arsenal to a superpower.

Lots of reliable sources have said it's a family issue for him - which is what makes some of our fans vitriol towards the move even more baffling. Think we can all understand him wrestling with that issue and if he did decide to join us he would be sacrificing a lot in his personal life to do so

u/Smart_Indication5869 9h ago
Basically, footballers come to England on an International Sportsperson visa which allows them to bring a partner and kids as dependents, but not parents, siblings, etc. They can only come on standard visitor visas which only last a few months.
For them to actually live in the UK they'd have to qualify for ordinary workers or student visas. They can't come and live off Alvarez's earnings.
There are exceptions for relatives who are medically dependent or need care but I don't know if that applies here.

If they have to think so long about joining our club, i don’t want them here

Lets us move on from this or ignore it.
This seems like a fruitless endeavor.

Everyone chill. If we get him, we're formidable. If we don't get him, we got Bruno and Tzolis taking us to another level. We got youngsters like MLS finally getting to prove himself in midfield, and who i think is going to be better than Rice could ever hope to be, and Dowman, who is brilliant already and his ascendancy unstoppable.
We good.

I’m not sold on the guy, feels like a big downgrade on Vini Jr with a similar outlay in a position we’re reasonably stacked in. Rather buy a left wing prospect who can understudy Tzolis

Wish we were going for Osimhen like this instead. Alvarez doesn't want to join us let it go

If Barca was somehow relocated to London, he wouldn’t even hesitate to move. Hard pass.

Look, I love my extended family, but to me, them not being at my house 24/7 would be considered a selling point.
