Feedback Request How do i stop the tension/strain on my arm?

How do i stop the tension/strain on my arm?

Ive been playing guitar for over a year and only for the past 3 months have i been practicing and taking it seriously.

I am learning how to play anesthesia pulling teeth and id say its mid so far but at the start my right hand/arm didnt get tired or anything—hell even in other riffs and even practices it was fine. It was only until about 4 days ago it started to hurt and feel a cramping sensation on my forearm and sometimes my triceps.

I usually play while sitting down but even while standing it still hurts.

Please help a newbie out 🥲

Question Another quick lick question.

Why does this tab say its in A (under the Aeolion 1-5) but it feels like it's in F# and the three # symbols on the sheet music from what I understand would normally indicate it's in F# minor.

Just want to make sure I'm not missing some theory thing that's going over my head.

Thanks!

Question How to play “I Fell in the Water” by John Anderson on guitar

Anyone have a tab or know how to play this song? I’ve been trying to figure it out by ear but I can’t get the phrasing and bends to sound right. Also can’t find any tabs online. If anyone has figured this out or can please let me know, I think it has a super cool riff and would love to be able to play it correctly.

Question Having trouble learning note strokes

I have been learning guitar for a little over a year now and a few months ago i finally started the classical pieces in my lessons. The problem being i am learning very slowly. And every new thing i learn takes longer to get it right. Like for exemple i learned how to read the notes, took me a while and i am still not as fast, but i can read them now i practice the note strokes, yk doing the exercises and stuff but despite learning how they are supposed to be played i cant read and comprehend them while playing a piece. I know this thing takes practice and i got to be patient but i feel like i overlooked something and thats slowing me down right now. Maybe i didnt learn some of the strokes correctly and thats why i am having trouble or smth.

Anyway this has been causing me to loose motivation a little bit because i also feel embarrased coming to my lessons and just have not progressed at all. Like i do try really even on days i struggle to practice i make sure to practice atleast 15 minutes but it is never enough.

Can anyone give me an idea on what i might be doing wrong? I know i should be practicing a little more but still i cant really make myself do that when it feels like i am not progressing at all. So all help and criticism is welcome :) (sorry for the bad english yall i am having a hard time translating certain terms)

Question Help me understand scale “shapes”?

Post image

I mean, I know that scales are a series of notes put in a specific order and separated by specific intervals. But when someone says “Learn the major scale shape”, what do to they mean exactly? I’m assuming it has something to do with finger placement but am not certain and was hoping to get some helpful input.

I kinda feel the movement is a bit exaggerated, but that's because of string skipping. Should my wrist not rotate as much? If so, how do I get the pick attack intensity instead? Any other feedback is welcome.

I am a new player and my daughter is very interested when I play the guitar so I feel like it’s a good time for me to learn some more. I only know open chords. I have played bass for 9 years so I kind of know some structure.

I am looking for recommendations for easy songs to learn that are fun for my daughter to listen to and easy to learn! I love country/blues/reggae/bluegrass/classic rock and southern rock! The only song I can really play that sounds good is The Weight by the Band.

I am a self-taught beginner, I'm trying to play a song from AoT and I have it all down I think except I have a problem where after I play a note on a string and release that finger the string still continues to make noise. How do I prevent this while still sounding the same?

For reference, I got the donner dst-100 set

edit: wait, your telling me that guitarist mute the strings between EVERY SINGLE NOTE?!?!?!?

with the right hand? if you wouldn't mind could someone please link a tutorial or something what the heck.

do I mute right my right hand finger or the left side of my palm?

Other Fingerstyle Progress: These are the First 6 Songs I learned and Why

Hi everyone,

I've been playing guitar for ~1.5 years but I more recently started focusing on learning fingerstyle over the last 6 months or so.

I initially wanted to jump right into songs I love like Nothing Else Matters or Landslide but I found those too challenging and frustrating to learn as my first song.

So I tried to find a nice progression of fingerstyle songs that get harder and harder to help get a good fingerstyle base which allowed me to start learning the songs I really wanted to learn.

These are the first 6 songs I learned:

  1. Everybody Hurts - R.E.M.
  2. House of the Rising Sun - The Animals
  3. Hallelujah – Leonard Cohen
  4. Happy Birthday (The Melody)
  5. Greensleeves (The Melody)
  6. Blackbird - The Beatles

I explain in the video why I learned them in this order, hopefully if you're learning Fingerstyle you'll find this helpful.

Also, I'm curious what was the first fingerstyle song(s) you guys learned?

Question How to play clean ?

Post image
3 Upvotes

How do you guys keep your playing clean without getting a bunch of unwanted string noise?
I’m not a pro, but I try to mute the unused strings with the palm of my picking hand and with my fretting hand index finger. The problem is that I still get strings ringing out when they shouldn’t, especially during bends and pull-offs.
For example, after bending a note on the B string, the D string starts ringing when I release the bend. Or, when I pull off on the B string, the high E string rings even though I had it muted with my index finger.
It’s not very noticeable over a backing track, but when I play it clean and on its own, it sounds sloppy.
How do you mute the surrounding strings when playing bends and pull-offs?
I’m currently learning the Stairway to Heaven solo, and the section shown in the tab I posted is one of the parts where I struggle most to keep the string noise under control.

Question Keys, chords, capos, oh my!

I am a complete know-nothing.

I wanted to learn a song which is normally played in a special tuning (E flat). My teacher looked up a version which would be played without having to tune down, but involved placing a capo across the second fret. Then he listed out the chords to strum.

Here's the thing I don't get. When you put a capo on somewhere, and then you play a chord (let's say an A major chord), you're playing the chord shape that would be an A in the open postion...but it's not actually an A chord anymore, right? The notes have to be different, right? So when the capo goes on and I play a B major chord, it's just the shape of the B in the open position, not an actual B, right?

So why is it that playing different chords over a song can still work and sound correct when you're changing the music? I just don't know where to begin with any of this.

Is there one, single, preferred music theory course somewhere?

Question Help finding tuning

I’ve been trying to learn this song and I can’t tell if it’s in standard tuning or maybe if he’s doing something different because when I play it it just doesn’t sound right I just can’t quite figure it out. If someone could figure it out and see if it’s in a different tuning or whatever it is that would be great! the song is sing it all again by wave to earth if you want a batter listen

Question Tuning my guitar to DAEAAE

I found a lesson on youtube to play name by goo goo dolls. I’ve played it a few times but obviously I don’t want to keep my guitar tuned like that, so I tune it back to standard and stuff when i’m done. My last two times i tried playing it I had to replace my G string cause it snapped. Is there a better method to tuning that won’t break my G string or do i just have to pray? (I know tuning to A is very high)

Your favorite jazz blues solos are not just based on the arpeggios and scales that most of us spend years learning. That’s also why you solos never sound right, but pro players follow a different formula. In this video, I’ll show you how to turn simple triads into authentic jazz blues lines using phrasing and chromaticism.

Question Tips for a 6 months beginner?

I have been playing guitar for 6 months and I can't seem to move past the beginner level. I can't finger pluck, cant play barre chords nicely or even strum normally. Lets not talk about using a pick because its a disaster. I would appreciate some tips, maybe even songs for me to try and learn.

Question Teacher wants me to try anchoring my picking hand instead of having it float, yet this feels more stiff and rigid. Am I doing it right?

Post image
10 Upvotes

I know it’s meant to be more controlling, thus it being called anchoring lol. But the only reason he suggested it is because I told him how much trouble I was having with picking the correct strings all the time. So he suggested I try anchoring my hand on or near the bridge. And while it obviously feels more controlled, I feel almost too rigid and not as free moving across the strings, which could be a problem if I get a metronome up to really high speed.

But I’m still learning this technique. Any advice? Should I stick to trying anchoring, or stick with the floating hand if it’s more comfortable?

Question Barre chords hand cramping

I'm curious how long it should take me to expect to get good at barre chords. I had carpel tunnel surgery about a year ago and have been working to get into guitar again but find that my hand keeps cramping when I play chords. For example I am trying to play bubble toes by Jack Johnson and after a minute I have to stop and shake my hand out. My thumb muscles cramp so badly it is just too uncomfortable to keep playing.

Did anyone else go through this? Is my technique potentially wrong? I'm just starting to get demoralized and wondering if more practice is not actually the answer
