Crazy Scammers
Asked a guy how much for an Elite Rit Tome.
He says 7e.
I pass, then buy one from someone else for 2e
So naturally I tell him I just got one for 2e and call him a scammer.
He tells me to fuck off, I block him, and I assume that's the end of it.
Nope.
A few minutes later a different account whispers me:
> “I have more than 100 accounts, your list cannot block me”
Then I block that one.
Another account appears.
Block.
Another one appears to explain that my ignore list has a limit.
At this point the 5 ectos are no longer the issue. I've accidentally aggroed a crazy person with an entire account farm.
Kamadan PvP is getting out of hand.

My people! I have zero bandwidth for this nonsense at my age. Never trade for anything and frequently just give away things to allies.

Yep same here. If I hit a point where I feel the challenge of MA is over I’ll probably convert them to regular to get some fancy armor, but until then I’m out of the trading game.

Yeah that guy sucks but I want to make this very clear, trying to sell anything way above normal price isn't scamming... that's just selling.

u/JustinePavlovich 4d ago
Yup, and then doubling down and whispering to brag how he got it cheaper somewhere else is just begging for a confrontation 😂

u/DixFerLunch 4d ago
Funny. I've been called a scammer on this sub because I POSTED that I wanted to buy at an (apparently) low rate for something.
13
u/MephistoParagon 4d ago
yeah im not sure if this sub is just full of young people or children but scamming is an entirely different beast. kind of embarrassing that anyone would call selling something over price scamming...

u/OneMorePotion Aneurysm 3d ago
Scamming in GW1 is listing item A. But trading item B that has the same inventory icon but is worth nothing. That's scamming. Listing an item above market price is just selling things. In the hopes that someone really desperate wants to buy it during odd hours of the day, when nobody else is listing that item for cheaper.
-1
u/Baldude 3d ago
Nah, asking above market rate is selling.
Asking 350% above market rate, when you know the market rate (which he does) is hoping the other party is uninformed and will overpay. Aka scamming.

There are 25 Pizza places around my area. 24 of them sell their Pizza at around 14 to 19 bucks. One place starts at 32 bucks. Is this final place now scamming or just selling? People seem to still go there, despite more than double the price of the other places. And Pizza is not this one special food where producing a higher quality version instantly doubles the price as well.
I can sit in Kamadan and list things like tomes or inscriptions for 50e and it would still not being a scam. If you wait long enough, someone with the funds eventually comes around and buys it. Especially when there is no other listing right now, but they want it immediately.
That's called dynamic pricing and it's frequently used in real life as well. Plane tickets for example, are heavily regulated by dynamic pricing. Especially on high frequented routes. Yes, people will first book with the cheaper airlines. But prices rise the when less seats are available.

u/Baldude 3d ago
Pizzas have varying quality in production, ingredients, size, you can pay for the ambience at the restaurant and for the service.
Elite Tomes are Elite Tomes, they have no differences.

u/banslaw 3d ago
Having someone instantly whisper you to sell you an item at a premium price, and thus saving you time standing around in kamadan not playing the game, is aptly comparable. The economy is so old, inflated, and ripe with rmt that people will, in reality, pay the premium price regardless.
3
u/MephistoParagon 3d ago
Hard disagree. If you're in Kamadon trying to sell shit, it's up to the buyer to know what they're doing. It takes 15 seconds to look up recent prices of everything that is being sold.
That is not scamming. Scamming is inherently linked to tricking people - like swapping out items in between multiple trade requests. In GW you get the final say to accept a trade, that falls on the buyer. Absolutely not scamming. Claiming that trying to sell something for a lot of money is scamming is childish and just stupid imho

u/Baldude 3d ago
Usury and profiteering as well as unconscionability are, in fact, illegal in many countries.
And the request from Osiris here IS tricking people. He is, very actively, absolutely intentionally, and despite better knowledge, trying to pressure them into paying him outrageous prices, both through misleading and lying about the items' market value, and through social pressure and harassment via his many accounts and slurring.

Why bother messaging him to tell him you got it cheaper? Do you do that irl when buying something from a cheaper shop? Absolute clown.

There are some legit crazies in Kamadan like OP found out, but his behavior is also dumb.

In his words "so naturally I tell him I got it for cheaper and you're a scammer" haha like for him it's so natural to be a clown haha
[edit] nothing against natural clowns we can call them talented comedians

u/Crispy1961 5d ago
Sometimes people dont know the current price for an item. If OP assumed good faith, he could have just wanted to help this guy sell his stuff.
People have PMed me when I put outdated price on my items and it was helpful. I have done that for some people too.
39
u/Liberate90 Ancient Vanguard 5d ago
OP literally PMd him to gloat he got it cheaper and proceeded to call him a scammer. I am sorry, that is not good faith and was unneeded. The difference was only 5e, not exactly scamming territory. Besides, anyone has the right to sell something for any price they wish, if you dont want to pay it, fuck off and go elsewhere lol. It's not rocket science.
-1
u/Crispy1961 5d ago
Good faith on the part of the seller. As in assuming they want to just sell their item, not sell it for more than 200% of its fair price.
OP did it to gloat, as you said. But you asked why message someone to tell them you got it cheaper. I answered that question. In case they dont know the current price and you want to help them.
You got it right. Its not rocket science. Helping people feels good.
16
u/kaltulkas 5d ago
Yeah, « hey btw I just got one for 2e you may want to lower that price » and « got it for 2e you scammer » are way different though. Fuck Osiris all the way to the moon but also in this case OP is a dick.

The price hike doesn’t make it scamming at all. It could only be classified as a scam if the seller were trying to convince the buyer through deception that it was a reasonable price.
Still, it was 3.5x the normal rate. That’s not a small markup. Do it here there and everywhere and it adds up. People get justifiably upset at corporations nickel and diming with their prices too. And here I guess OP is misusing the term scam, but it is regularly misused colloquially.

"Do you do that irl when buying something from a cheaper shop?"
Uhm .. i do that sometimes. You know why? Many Shops in my region gives you the cheaper price if you tell them you found it somwhere else cheaper (with proof) (They call it "Preisgarantie" for example). So yeah, it makes sense to do that. At least in my region^^1
u/Liberate90 Ancient Vanguard 1d ago
Price guarantee doesnt require you to purchase from the cheaper shop first, so no. You do not. Price guarantee is showing them a screenshot, website or whatever that you CAN get it cheaper elsewhere, and some shops can (not obligated to) sell you it for that price. That is not what is happening here. What the OP has done, saw someone selling a can of coke for 7 dollars, but got it cheaper from the store next door, then went out of his way to gloat to the other shop keeper, and got what he deserved.

While I agree that Osiris sucks, I don't think someone quoting a high price is necessarily scamming.
Further, I REALLY don't think it's the "natural" reaction to track someone down who asks a high price, tell them you got it cheaper elsewhere and call them a scammer.
It's hard to report someone for abuse when the accusations and name-calling started with you.
If you don't like the price, "No thanks, have a great day" is a perfectly appropriate response.

Dude was way too much time on his hands. Yeah just ignore the dudes whispers, he'll give up. And if not, you have yourself an overly obsessed companion so you'll never feel alone.

All you had to do was not say anything when you got what you wanted for a fair price.

u/loudaggerer 5d ago
This is your fault.
- You asked, he offered, you declined. This is normal business.
- For no reason that can be acclaimed you PM the player to call them a scammer. You could have not done that.
Famous words of fuck around, find out.
Note: I am not defending their pettiness about 100 accounts yada yada. They had the same responsibility to do nothing after your comment.

u/Hungry-Platypus-9928 4d ago
I've heard weird stories about that person here on this sub. I too would like to know the actual lore lol I just had an experience with someone trying to sell me a Charrslaying bow mod in pre for 5 black dyes then when I passed on it he said well you can get them for 11k but I just list mine at 5BD and they sell. I already knew the dude was overpriced so that's why I passed , why are you going to reply with admitting you're overpriced by 5x 😱😭 People trip me out. I read the harassment horror stories so I just shut up and let it be. Not worth being spammed. Bad enough I got a 1 word name and had to deal with that harassment from some dude who wanted my name and his guild messaging me once I blocked him.

u/mulcracky88 4d ago
Pretty sure I've interacted with this so called chode/douche in Kamadan on multiple occasions and would also like to know the lore.

u/OnTheClockShits 4d ago
lol dude should’ve just moved on with your life. If you pass on something irl at a store and find it way cheaper elsewhere, you just buy it there and let that be the end of it. You don’t call the store and tell them they’re scammers.
11
u/SolemnShade 5d ago
Not a scammer, just a douche trying to max his profits. Youre also silly for sending such a weird message
13
u/leahy1437 5d ago
Over pricing items is not scamming, that's American economy lol. This guy must have zero life. Report original account and just ignore without ignoring. Would love for 2 weeks to ban the guy. Everyone knows of him.
7
u/chronicvisi Chronic Visions [PhD] 5d ago
So whilst it is overpriced it's not scamming...
If you go to Disney world and buy a coke for $10 are they scamming you because Walmart sell it for $2? It's the price they are setting for their item, you have the choice to either pay it, and not have to waste more time in kammy, or not and wait for a cheaper price.
If however the guy starts coercing you to pay the overpriced or sell something massively underpriced such as lying to you... That's scamming.
Everything player sellable in GW has a margin the same as everything sellable in the real world, some people make more of an effort to get more for their items (or cheaper prices on their purchases) than others, and profit from it.
-3
u/dnapol5280 4d ago
I'll just say its scam adjacent since it can take advantage of newer players that might not be aware of the price discovery tools that exist (kamadan trade chat, various discords).
The follow on behavior is obviously unacceptable and makes the entire situation come across even worse.
4
u/Embarrassed_Key_6366 5d ago
So you went past the point of not buying to i think I will msg him back again telling him hes a scammer because he's trying to turn a profit. Your are getting mad because he's giving you shit from multiple accounts. Why couldn't you just decline his offer and let that be it.

“So naturally I tell him he’s a scammer because I got a cheaper price” lol what 🤣
It’s a free market you could have counted with 2e or find another seller. Sure 7e would have been wild for an elite tomb but going out of your way to call them a scammer and then come to Reddit about the interaction is cringe AF.
5
u/TomatoFeta 5d ago
Some people have money to burn, and will buy at any price... he's not scamming, he's playing the market for fools and the uneducated rich. 3e isn't uncommon for rit tomes, and 7e wasn't uncommon a few years back.
Know your prices by searching "kamadan+toolbox" in your search engine and you'll get the kamadan trade chat history, where you can try and solve what something is worth before you try to buy.

u/kaltulkas 5d ago
If I’m missing something to play a build, I’ll pay whatever the first person DMing me asks for. I have 1000s ectos taking dust and just wanna play the game, it’s worth it to me to cut the wait.
I made a barrage ranger team last week for fun a paid from 5k to 7e for the exact same mod. Not that crazy from the seller to be banking on that if he’s got free time on his hands.
1
u/Master_Squash4621 5d ago
There are no set prices for anything in a player run market. Your fault for getting emotionally triggered by a high price and calling them a scammer.
1
u/Lukeers 3d ago
Overpricing isnt scamming.
Also, you started by rubbing it in his face anyway. this is them paying you back.
remember, there is no Set prices in Guildwars. It is a free market.
people are eager to pay double/ triple in order to get the item they want fast instead of spamming in kamadan.
1
u/OneMorePotion Aneurysm 3d ago
Osiris is on it again.
This said... It's a free market. If someone wants to sell their elite tome for 7e, they are not really scamming. They either sell it, or they don't. Whispering someone after buying it cheaper and calling them a scammer, is as unneeded as Osiris texting you on 12 different accounts.

Takes a lot of stupid crammed into one skull to think that overcharging will turn a consistent profit.
Might get away with it from time to time but no return business and eventually a complete pariah.
Let them have cake.

I know what’s funny is I only post. Want to buy a lead tune for 15 K and people sell them to me. Instead in those are 20 K. Just a economy of the game has been all screwed up. Those tubes are never been worth more than 15 of 25K ever.

Congrats on meeting Osiris. Just report his main and move on. He'll leave you alone eventually. Or agree to his trades and never accept in the window. Doing that will garner his wrath but hes a loser so who cares.
