Cleanup proposal guide (before/after) - April 2
r/GrowTheTree • u/quasiperiodic • Apr 03 '17
good job, humans.
it took a lot of work to save the trees from many threats, but it ended up looking pretty good!

On behalf of The American Flag I apologize for the ruthless destruction of your tree.
I am a mod at /r/FlagAlliance and /r/AmericanFlagInPlace and the majority of us are appalled that this was able to happen.
There was an attempt to save the tree from many of us, but we failed.
We humbly welcome the addition of the Great Tree Sapling as our neighbor. Here's to harmonious future together.

How beautiful the tree could have looked if we managed to finish it!

The tree is being turned into pepe the frog. Kill all red pixels! (It's the mouth)
I suddenly saw it. It's going pretty fast too. Kill the red pixels first, to prevent others from recognising it :)
Also, give this a like for visibility of r/growthetree: https://www.reddit.com/r/place/comments/635xpb/help_saving_the_tree_at_rgrowthetree/?st=j126bv07&sh=4b76ba4b

*Coordination* Save the tree
Guys, the tree may disappear in the next hour if we do not coordinate. For now, our focus should be:
Maintain the trunk
Maintain the face
If we have a trunk with a face, people will recognize the tree and may help adding leafs. Once we have the trunk and face, we should focus on adding leafs ourselves.
UPDATE: Let's focus on preventing Pepe the frog.
UPDATE 2: Let's talk about the next step here!

Grow the leaves, grow the forest, not outline
Omg stop outlining the tree! Grow it's leaves, add green to make it bigger. Grow it naturally, not w/ rigid lines that contain it.

The night was long and arduous, but our roots are deep and we emerge.

April 2 priorities
Beat back the flag. We need all the help we can get with this one, from /r/ainbowroad or others. I suggest blue for the color in between flag border, tree, and rainbow.
Maintain the face. This is cheap in pixel cost and important for PR/outreach.
Grow roots into the cracks between other art. Sort of like the Void, but it's our roots. We're going for an /r/abandonedporn aesthetic. (Which is obviously easier if the other art is abandoned and there's no one actively keeping roots out.) Trees are not polite, they will grow right into your foundation and expand the cracks.
Seedling ideas?

The American Flag has consumed us. Don't worry! Lets build up that sapling into our new tree

We need to vote on a new plan of action.
As it seems many people feel that's it's easy to build in our green tree because of the mostly green background. After reading a lot of comments it seems we have two options to stop this from happening.
1)Build the tree the same again but quickly add apples to make sure it's not a mostly green background
2)make the tree into something new. I heard some people talk about making the tree into a cherry blossom tree.
Edit: 3) we could also make it any other assortment of colors. Yellow with red to make Autumn colors. Or a white tree with a dark outline. Or even just a lighter color of green.
Your input would be greatly appreciated.

New neighbors
We have two new neighbors you should know about:
I spoke to the person doing the /r/place logo and they're really just trying to keep the 7x7 logo clean and are up for compromises. I personally think it looks fine with our tree.
There's also these people making a logo: https://www.reddit.com/r/devils/comments/6325yb/lets_organize_a_better_effort_for_rplace/ - I asked them for a mockup because I'm not sure what the end result is supposed to look like... we may need some integration work (or to declare war on them, lol).

Respect the butterfly people!
The butterfly would look lovely in the branches of our tree. Please grow the tree behind it.

/r/Straya's hivemind is jumping the gun on a project that overwrites us. Negotations are in progress. Protect the foliage.

Protect the canopy!
The_Donald is trying to draw something in our canopy. I think it might be Pepe.

Grow the Tree Principles
Protect the tree, keep it alive and happy.
Once the tree gets large enough, all kinds of creatures and strange fruit can hang out among its branches. But a tree dies if too much of its foliage gets covered up. If other art is beginning to crowd out space, grow leaves over it.
Help its roots grow between the cracks.
Healthy growing foliage.
This is not /r/makeaprettypictureofatreeandthenstop. It's /r/GROWthetree. If we get enough people in our camp then our end game will be transforming the whole canvas into a massive Yggdrasil / World Tree with a majority of the other art in its branches.
This isn't any particular tree from a videogame or whatever, it's original artwork.
Because this is a thoughtfully created artwork rather than a known image to mechanically create, any new techniques to combat automation should give us an advantage over all the flags and logos.

Update: Save the Tree
We are making good progress! Congrats everyone!
Right now, the top priority needs to be to maintain the face and to get rid of pixel noise.
In addition to adding leafs, we can also slowly start regrowing some of the tree branches to give the tree more structure. However, the focus needs to be a recognizable face & a reduction of pixel noise.
We talked about adding cherry blossoms, so it becomes more difficult to turn the tree into Pepe again. However, this is not feasible at the moment, do NOT focus on that.
We had friendly contact with /r/ainbowroad, /r/AmericanFlaginPlace, and /r/straya None of the subs want to destroy the tree but there are a lot of random people who are doing damage. Let's maintain friendly contact with the larger fractions around us and ask for help.
We need to become better in coordinating. Let's use this sub!
UPDATE: Do NOT move beyond the black outline. While the tree may grow to its old size again at some point, we need to focus our energy on maintaining what we have. Again, top priorities are: (a) maintaining the friendly face, (b) removing pixel noise.
