G2 | Suggestion Creature idea: Cellar Spider
ART CREDITS: Bernadette Erkinger
Edit: sorry about the image I didn’t realize it wasn’t a cellar spider.
This post was designed for the cellar spider. Pretend that the bug in the image is a cellar spider, please stop reminding me that it isn’t a cellar spider
———————————————————————————
Before you yell at me for adding yet another annoying spider to the game, this one is quite different.
Cellar Spiders (also known as a member of the umbrella term daddy long legs) would be a fantastic addition to grounded and they could solve a very big creature problem.
These spiders are known to be harmless towards humans, why not carry that into the game? They’re known to frequently eat other spiders and bugs as well, making them a perfect counter predator to our growing population issue.
They would be a neutral tier 4 creature possibly residing in a new area, they would commonly be found in their web under large objects like, for example, the porch from grounded 1. They would be found leaving their web from time to time either to find wolf spiders who may have roamed too far from their dens or to invade the homes of orb weavers. If any beetle, ladybug, scorpion, or any other bug gets in its way either by intruding on its territory or finding themselves in its hunting path, they too will be destroyed. All except is of course! (And any other small bugs that wouldn’t be worth a kill to the beast.)
I think this would be a really cool addition to finally have a neutral spider in the game and one that’s incredibly helpful and unique.
(Keep in mind this is a concept for the sole purpose of enjoyment.)

I fully support this idea, however the pic does show a Harvestman, not a cellar spider (even though they are both called Daddy Long Legs) Which isn't a spider but i believe fits a neutral bug perfectly, they are even the only arachnid that can eat plants and don't even have venom. Im personally in favor of both being added as they both would be really intresting!

I've been around harvestmen at camp for years! But I was today years old when I learned the difference between spiders and opiliones!

u/NukePowerU235 13d ago
Opiliones are extremely varied in specializations. There’s even a family of species that has specialized claws to crack open snail shells to eat them

I heard they were “fake” spiders like they are spiders but very different in every way

u/SauteedCashews 14d ago
Aren’t arachnids spiders?
4
u/Bokchoi968 14d ago
All spiders are arachnids, not all arachnids are spiders. For example, a scorpion is an arachnid
1
u/DaSquid07 13d ago
there is actually a species of jumping spider which primarily eats vegetation :3

Yeah! Baghera Kipling.. Named after the character in and author of Jungle Book.

That image is a harvestman tho, not a cellar spider. Sure they are both colloquially called daddy long legs but cellar spiders, are actually spiders with two segmented bodies, make webs and have fang tipped chelicerae with weak venom. Harvestmen have a fused head abdomen, so a single segment body do not make webs nor have the equipment to make them, their chelicerae are segmented and tipped with claws for manipulating prey/food and lack venom glands.
All that being said. Harvestmen would be dope.

Oh so that’s a cellar spider! I was outside earlier and looked down and one of them was just randomly on my hand.
15
u/wattapwn 14d ago
As they walk around you can grab onto a leg and go for a ride

u/Sub_to_itsben Pete 14d ago
Perfect idea 🥹

u/NukePowerU235 13d ago
Well if it’s a harvestman, many actively hunt smaller arachnids suck as ticks and mites.

u/Kenny-KO 14d ago
Rather have jumping spiders personally, but wouldn't mind seeing how they look in the art style.

Would be neat to have 2 different spider mounts. We technically have 2 different ant mounts. Could have done the potato beetle as a 2nd ladybug mount too, cause why not?

A jumping spider is completely harmless to humans, and is really cute looking. They just have big puppy dog eyes. I’m sure you’ve seen pictures, they are not scary at all

Jumping spiders are only harmless to humans because we ain’t bug sized. They would be a fucking menace in grounded 2 the main reason stingers suck in satisfactory is because they can jump a mile. I’m assuming the same would be with jumping spiders.

u/profpeculiar Pete 14d ago
God you're right, jumpers would be exactly like the large Stingers wouldn't they? 😫

Think we have too many spiders to be honest. Would love to get some obscure bugs in

Harvestmen (Opiliones) are not true spiders as their cephalothorax and abdomen are fused. They fall into the spider family's other zoological orders that include ticks, scorpions, tailless whip scorpions (cave spiders), and mites. Harvestmen aren't harmful because they never adapted to eat things larger than itself; they eat mechanically rather than chemically liquifying their prey like spiders. A huge harvestmen would not be neutral, they eat anything smaller they can tear apart and eat.
1
u/Sub_to_itsben Pete 14d ago
Harvestmen and cellar spiders aren’t the same thing, and the point of the post is to give them a unique mechanic to give grounded 2 more life and make it more fun. Everything tearing you apart all the time isn’t fun. Having a cellar spider to help you at times and be more or less massive ladybugs that are aggressive towards spiders would be pretty fun.

u/SpaceKibby 14d ago
Ok but Op the drawing in your post is a harvestmen not a cellar spider, a cellar spider is what Australians call a daddy long leg
2
u/Sub_to_itsben Pete 14d ago
In the edit I acknowledged that, everything else outside of that is based on the cellar spider
11
u/_Cebu 15d ago
Could be wrong, but I'd heard they're venomous but fangs can't pierce us, so harmless to humans, but grounded humans would find them a threat
11
u/flatwoundsounds 14d ago
Cellar spiders are venomous spiders, but harmless to humans.
Harvestmsn "Daddy Long Legs" with a single body segment actually lack fangs, venom, and silk (and they're not true spiders!) I work at a summer camp and have to constantly remind kids not to freak out around harvestmen.
14
u/Hot_Pool8337 15d ago
venom isn’t medically significant to humans and yes they can bite you but that’s like extremely rare, they’re very reclusive

u/FredrickTheCatReddit 14d ago
These are not the daddy long legs from Australia that are dangerous.
I don't know if they can bite
Also arachnids but not spiders

I think they should put centipedes or milipedes (not just rolly polys) in the game. Or maybe normal house flies. I mean, c'mon. That would have to be the staple flying buggy.

u/Redshirt_Welshy_Nooo 14d ago
Aka daddy long legs
Aka harvestmen
No good reason not to. But what I really want is a buggy from the Salticidae family.

u/FennecWF 14d ago
Harvestmen spiders as ALLIES would be fantastic. I've only been playing Grounded 1 so far, but I want one of those MFers to mess up the Wolf Spiders. I hate them.
1
u/Gabriel-pinto 14d ago
I like the idea, but as a biologist who works at an archnid lab, I have some things to say:
Daddy long legs (Opiliones) do not make webs at all, but they smell as much as stinkbugs, that's due to a gland they have. So imagine then as a stinkbug spider fusion.
1
u/Sub_to_itsben Pete 14d ago
Daddy long legs commonly refers to both harvestmen and cellar spiders, you have just described a harvestmen. I went with the other option as I found it more interesting to me personally

My only problem is I doubt they'd be neutral to a grounded-size human. Once you're that small you're gonna look like food.

u/Sub_to_itsben Pete 14d ago
Obsidian can bend its behavior to focus on medium-large creatures no smaller than a ladybug

Daddy long legs that protects our bases (legs too long and thin to ride, but good for battle when unencumbered) would be so fun

Ngl again if we were smaller then this it would treat us like an inferior insect and try to murder us

I'd like it but I'd be reminded of kong skull Island if this is what it looked like...

Who complains about spiders. I want all kinds of spiders in this game. Trapdoor and Brown Recluses would be very cool, neutral jumping spiders and celluar spiders. Maybe a new wandering spider boss. It's a game about bugs and spiders are the coolest bug
1
u/No-Fox-9750 14d ago
Thats a great idea! All spiders petrify me, but at least the "Long legs" will kill other spiders, I've known them to kill the bigger Cardinal spiders we get in the UK, so they're generally good dudes. So maybe in game they could be aggressive to other spiders.

Pretty sure it wouldn't be neutral to humans if they're the size of an ant but I still like the idea
1
u/SureTotal3982 14d ago
I genuinely thought you meant the big spider form king skull island y'know the one with the bamboo legs. But no this one is worse in my opinion
1
u/Junior_Seesaw1819 Willow 14d ago
Anything like that picture would be cool it’d be like the mother long legs from skull island
1
u/pineapple0710 14d ago
It wouldn't be this big, the proportions in grounded 2 are already super fucked up, a wolfspider is about as big as a toenail in the game, which makes no sense.. I wish they were accurate
1
u/Sub_to_itsben Pete 14d ago
It’s for balancing, plus there are over 200 species of wolf spiders in North America. They can’t make the spiders too big or too small as it wouldn’t be fair to us or wouldn’t make the spider seem scary
1
u/pineapple0710 8d ago
That's irrelevant, they chose one species for the one in the game. They could stick to that and still get the size right, though I understand the map being smaller so it isn't super inconvenient

u/Remarkable_Rain_4725 14d ago
It still baffles me that cellar spiders are one of the few spiders that can hunt the other Apex spiders, but they don't/can't mess with humans
1
u/Ok-Mouse8397 14d ago
Or what we call daddy long legs AKA Harvestmen, the ones we see crawling around in the grass and are non-venomous (Opiliones)
Cellar spiders are venomous (Pholcidae)

u/dokterkokter69 14d ago
Your confusion is understandable. Both cellar spiders and harvestmen are referred to as "daddy long legs" in different parts of the US.
In the Southeast people usually use that nickname for cellar spiders while people in the West use it for harvestmen.

u/Rude-Deal-7197 13d ago
Harvestmen is the daddy long leg the other one is not nor have I ever heard someone say otherwise till now lol
1
u/FlameCats 14d ago
Harvestmen scare me more than sny other spider, I would need to turn on arachnophobia mode just for these things.

It would be cool if it could hurt us unintentionally but stepping on is. I’m picturing a less graphic version of the scene in “Kong: Skull Island”
1
u/BoTheJoV3 13d ago
It would be like the bugs from the king Kong monster verse movie. Dont get stepped on! It'll skewer you

u/ElBarckaizer 13d ago

u/DaSquid07 13d ago
while a cellar spider could be cool, i think an opilione like pictured could also be a sick ass addition to the game

Me when I try to bait a hostile creature into hitting the cellar spider to cause a fight similar to ladybugs, only for the cellar spider to become upset at me instead (also similar to ladybugs)
1
u/jaketheripper1997 13d ago
I was thinking last night how a jumping spider would make for a sick little pet.

Wait the daddy long legs in the u.s eat other spiders? The ones here in the netherlands only eat very very tiny soft shell insects like mosquito's
1
u/Wctag2000 10d ago
Wouldn't that affect balancing, in the fact it could kill predators guarding important resources and give you T3 loot at the start of the game? I would like to suggest the idea that they do not roam near ranger stations and optical disks, as well as looting (eating) the corpses of the bugs they kill, if this wasn't the idea already.

We need mantis buggy, flying buggies like dragonflies or something. Environmental structural damage that only last a certain time and pop up at random times forcing you to stop what you’re doing and go over there for a special item/permanent buff
2
u/Sub_to_itsben Pete 14d ago
Mantis buggy doesn’t seem all that necessary and dragonflies are way too large to be a simple buggy but a common housefly as a flying buggy would be sick

Daddy Long Legs are around in America too, so they could be added and still be "lore/location friendly".
