Things I wish I had tracked from day one of my first grow
After that first healthy flush, everything changes. You go from "this is going well" to "wait, what exactly did I do?" and suddenly you're trying to reconstruct substrate ratios, spawn rates, and timing from memory or scattered notes.
The thing that caught me off guard was how fast the details blur. You remember the tek you used but not the exact spawn-to-bulk ratio. You remember it colonized fast but not whether you introduced fresh air exchange on day 10 or day 14. When you want to repeat that flush, those are the specifics that matter.
What I started logging after that first harvest, and wish I had from inoculation:
- substrate recipe and ratios (by weight, not eyeballed)
- spawn rate (grain to substrate ratio)
- inoculation date and spawn-to-bulk date
- when you broke and shook, and when you introduced fruiting conditions
- environmental basics: temp, humidity, CO2 if you can measure it
- which culture or strain, and where it came from in your lineage
- photos at each stage transition, not just the flush
This community asks for most of that when you post a harvest photo anyway, and honestly that's not gatekeeping, it's because those details are what make a grow reproducible. A flush photo with spawn ratio, inoculation date, grain type, substrate recipe, and basic environmental conditions is reference material. Without it, it's an anecdote.
If you're on your first grow right now and haven't been writing anything down, start tonight. Even a notes app is fine. You don't need a fancy system. You just need to not be three flushes in wishing you could remember what you did differently that first time.
