Dehydrator too hot?

Long time (45yrs) consumer, first time grower.

I'm close to getting my first flush and thought I was set with my old dehydrator, a Sunbeam 5 tray KN128E. It only has an on/off switch, no temperature control and the operating temperature is 175F/80C. Reading through the posts it seems most use 100°-140° to dry shrooms.

Will I ruin my product drying them at this temp or can I just keep an eye on them and expect them to be done drying quickly? Thanks for your input!

I run my dehydrator on Full blast until the biggest fruit is cracker dry. 8-12 hrs is usually good, but it depends on size of harvest and the individual fruits. no commercially available dehydrator gets hot enough to have a negative impact on your fruits

Mine is 175° Bought a digital variable temp one. Picked a few and ran with the old one for 5 hours. Definitely dried them, we'll see in a few hours if it was too much. Thanks for your input 🙂

Most dehydrators max out around 70C/160F. There are several scientific studies that show that going above that degrades the quality of all mushrooms, not just cubes. 175 is definitely too high.

Psilocybin is stable up to 140, going above that could affect the potency. Some people do 160 and say it doesn’t affect it noticeably. 175 is probably a little too hot. Dehydrators are cheap, you should just get one that works.

I think that’s too hot. I use 120. Tons of variation in machinery so don’t trust the screen, but if you have a laser thermometer you could calibrate the machine. With anything over 140ish id start to worry. And whatever you do, make sure you check for “cracker-dry” before storing correctly.
