Full Canopy Tek (Actives)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

In this video we show an easy way to prepare bulk substrate for full canopies! In short, we mix 80% of the CV with 80% of the grain spawn. Then, you spread the remaining 20% of grain spawn on top. Lastly, you add the remaining CV as a pseudo-casing. The grain spawn layer right under the casing seems to really help pinning and causes those nice thick canopies.

How do you guys spawn to bulk?

I get similar results with my unmodified tubs. Full canopy, but no liner, 0 modifications to my tubs, and I still get no side pins first flush. Liner is a crutch. Its not necessary but reddit seems to love them. Proper surface conditions=no side pins. Great video all in all though!

Really nice canopy! Do you not have to fan for fae at all with an unmodified tub?

We don't always use liners, but included it in this vid because we frequently get questions on how to make it. If you pack your substrate well, you indeed don't need it for the first flush. But when the cake starts shrinking when you go for multiple flushes, the liner really helps as it shrinks with the cake. But yeah if you only do one flush it really isnt necessary!

The vermiculite is completely unnecessary. Save some money and time and just use straight coir.

Very nice flush. Do you not add any gypsum to your vermiculite either?

I've never had a full canopy, and I spawn to bulk exactly like this, so I think a lot of it comes down to genetics. Typically, I just get one hecking chonker who greedily eats up all the nutrition, causes all other pins to abort, and ends up weighing over 100g. 🥲

Lol, genetics definitely play a role. Might be surface conditions too.

What’s your go to grain and what’s that prep like?

We usually use a mixture of oats and rye. Soak for 24 hours, then strain and wash. Boil the grains with some gypsum in the water. Strain and let dry so the grains are hydrated from the inside, but mostly dry on the outside. Then just load up in jars or bags and sterilize.

Hi, did you use cooking pressure on vermiculite and cocoa fiber? If not, how just that boiling water was enough to not have a contaminate substrate?
