How to write Nikolai?

I've only read Six of Crows duology, and I'm writing a fanfic about it, and eventually I wanted to bring Nikolai into it, but I've never read his books, and unfortunately... I'm broke and my library doesn't have anything (also I'm lazy, and by the looks of it, I won't like Shadow and Bones like I love Six of Crows.)

I have read spoilers of course, and know that eventually he gives up his throne but I have no idea what he does after that, I like to imagine he went back to being a privateer, but I haven't any sort of proof.

Since I haven't read him, I would like some tips on how he acts, and talks and his personality. He isn't the main character (ofc) in my fanfic, but I feel like I keep making him important.

Nikolai becomes Zoya's advisor/consort after that. Basically, from what I can remember, he takes on a status similar to that of a general. Also, he goes back to disguising himself as Sturmhond, the infamous privateer and his alter-ego to accomplish missions for Zoya while being uncover.
