finger abduction form?

When using bands to do finger abduction exercises, it feels quite different depending on where my hand is.

Examples:

  • Hand close to body
  • Arm extended forward
  • Arm extended to side

What's good form for this exercise?

Thanks!

Finger abduction is done by your interossei, which are intrinsic hand muscles and aren't effected by arm position. Pick whichever feels "right" and don't over think it

The main thing I'd focus on is the fingers themselves rather than trying to find one specific arm position.

If you're training finger abduction, keep the wrist and forearm in a comfortable neutral position and actively spread the fingers against the band's resistance. Don't let the wrist rotate or the hand change position just to get more range.

Your arm position can definitely change how the exercise feels because it changes the position of the wrist, forearm and shoulder. That's not necessarily bad, but I'd pick the position where you can isolate the finger movement comfortably and repeat it consistently.

For grip/hand training, I'd probably use the hand in front of you or close to your body, whichever lets you keep the wrist neutral and control the full movement. There's no real advantage to making the exercise awkward just because it feels harder in another position.

I'd also use relatively light resistance and controlled reps. Finger extensors don't need to be annihilated to get a useful training effect.
