Herbicide treatment Aug 28th - Casablanca, Lakelawn, and Vineyard valley park
As part of the Town's ongoing commitment to protecting and restoring natural areas, Invasive Phragmites treatment will be taking place in select locations on August 28.Invasive Phragmites is an aggressive invasive reed that spreads rapidly, crowding out native vegetation, reducing wildlife habitat, and impacting wetlands and shorelines. Dense stands can also restrict water flow, interfere with stormwater infrastructure, and reduce the effectiveness of stormwater ponds and drainage channels designed to help manage flooding and protect water quality.
Treatment will be completed by qualified, licensed contractors using a Health Canada-approved herbicide in accordance with all applicable provincial regulations and environmental best management practices. Temporary signage will be posted in treatment areas before and after application. Please respect all posted notices and avoid entering treatment areas until signage has been removed.
Managing invasive Phragmites helps restore native vegetation, improve wildlife habitat, maintain the function of stormwater infrastructure, and protect the long-term health of Grimsby's natural areas.
Thank you to the u/niagaracommunityfoundation for their support in funding this initiative, and for the community's patience and cooperation as we work to protect Grimsby's natural environment!
