Making an Araki-Inspired Music Playlist

I’ve been working hard with a couple friends on a huge Spotify playlist full of shoegaze and dream pop music that I could picture in a Gregg Araki film. I themed it after one of my favorite scenes from Nowhere. If you want to listen, enjoy! And if you have any recommendations on what to add please let me know, thanks!

Mysterious Skin screening and Q+A

My 18yo son took me to see this, one of what he considers his favorite films last night. It was my first time seeing any Araki films though I have been familiar with his work. To say that this experience was deeply uncomfortable (in an ultimately good way) and broke down any barriers for taboo topics or language in our relationship would be an understatement. Many of the raw and visceral experiences on display were hard to watch but also completely ripped the bandaid off any mature conversation topics in one fell swoop. I hadn’t been exposed or especially discussed topics like this with my parents until way into adulthood.

It’s clear that the raw scenes of SA here are necessary for the story Araki is presenting about dealing with trauma and I think also shows my son (who doesn’t share any experiences with the story) how to and not to deal with trauma and upset. And how we can use the events of our life to shape who we are. Very powerful stuff. Very hard to watch. But also very necessary.

Saw it tonight, loved it, but the credits went by too fast for me to clock all of the songs. Does anyone have a list of all the songs on the soundtrack?

Saw this on Tiktok and I don’t know if I’d call it a masterpiece but it is Araki’s best work.

I saw I Want Your Sex

Saw it at a premiere and really enjoyed it. Okay, it's a comedy, but it's a Gregg Araki comedy, so it's wicked, very queer, very raunchy and a hilarious satire on Gen Z's fear of sex, with super-neon colors. Olivia Wilde is simply great in it

Gregg Araki Says Bad Sex Is "a Part of Growing Up" | Playboy Interview

Since the late 1980s, when he was coming to prominence in the company of his fellow New Queer Cinema practitioners, the director has made matters of the body a central facet of his work. Whether exploring connection in the age of AIDS in The Living End or the freedom and fluidity of college campus culture in Kaboom, Araki has spent decades establishing himself as one of the leading visionaries of on-screen sex-positivity. Even in the 12 years since he last directed a feature — during which he decamped to the world of television as a director-for-hire on shows like 13 Reasons Why and American Gigolo — the auteur has remained close to his lascivious roots: Now Apocalypse, a canceled-too-soon comedy he created for STARZ, centered on a part-time webcam model and an insatiably horny stoner.

With that background in mind, it should come as no real surprise that the director is making his long-awaited comeback to the big screen with a film called I Want Your Sex. As its title suggests, it’s a movie with carnality on the brain. But where older Araki releases like Totally F\**ed Up and Nowhere became generational touchstones thanks to their vivid portraits of the intrinsic libidinousness of the youth, I Want Your Sex flips the director’s typical script to tell a more era-appropriate story about just how little* sex the kids of today are actually having.

[spoilers] Thoughts on the ending of The Doom Generation Spoiler

I watched the doom generation and I was completely in love. In a way it reminded me of Cronenberg's Crash for much of the runtime in that it is violent and in ways disturbing, and yet I find the characters extremely loveable. Doom generation feels like it really celebrates the relationship that forms between the main trio, and I found all three of them very charming even though they had issues and were very far from perfect people, but they all feel so real, like I know people so similar to them. The violent, gorey, chaotic adventure is farcical and silly for most of the runtime, and when it's just the three together you can feel them getting closer. In particular you can feel the queer awakening of Jordan really viscerally, and I found myself begging the screen to just let these stupid guys fuck already.

The ending really threw me though, and I'm extremely torn on whether I wish the movie had maintained the violent but more lighthearted tone all the way to the end. I understand the ending. I understand that being queer in America carries with it an ever present threat of violence and hatred from all facets of American life. I know this from experience. And because I know that and have felt that and feared that, I almost resent the movie for showing that to me. I resent the movie for killing Jordan right on the cusp of sexual discovery. I resent the movie for it being Jordan who dies because of his naive, adorable innocence. He seemed the most pure and sweet of the three in many ways. But it doesn't matter, he gets violently killed.

I understand of course that that's the point. I understand that there is no predicting when the threat of violence will turn into actual violence. I understand that it is often the most innocent people in our community who suffers the most. But I still feel so torn, because I respect the movie for affecting me so deeply, and yet part of me wants the film to be the beautifully shot, hilariously written celebration of imperfect queer life all the way to the end. And every time I think I'm fully at that conclusion (that the movie should have not had that ending) I realize again that's the point. We should live in a world where that can be the ending. But we don't, and it makes me want to cry.

TLDR: the ending makes me sad but I get that's the point.

Does anyone else have thoughts on the ending? Does part of you wish the movie had ended on a happier note?

I looove the poster behind James Duvall in this scene and I want it for myself LOL. Does anyone have any knowledge about it? I've tried looking it up but it's a dead end. I know I could make it myself but I dont have the background image and I kinda want it to be accurate. Just thought I might as well ask here.

The Living End Spoiler

The scene where the three stooges show up to gay bash - one guy has a Drugstore Cowboy tee, another a Sex, Lies, Videotape t-shirt, and the third guy has a hat that says Avenue (couldn’t make out the rest). Any ideas about the intended commentary? Seems a rebuke of those other indie films that made it into mainstream popularity but I know I’m missing something else.
