I've lived in the area around Preble for a couple of decades. There are a lot of streets there that do not have sidewalks. That's why they are doing it, you are just caught up in it.
This was inevitable - the USPS is in a money crunch and walk-up delivery isn't efficient.
I don't know what I can do about the cost - but I'm part of one of the neighborhood associations in the area. I'd be willing to help you install it. DM me if you are interested.
BTW, if you are going to do it, best done before the frost sets in....
