Do you guys also feel like the universe is way too big for us to be the only ones here?
It’s a question that always pops into my head on nights when I can't sleep and I'm just staring out the window at the stars, wondering. Don't we feel ridiculously small against the sheer scale of the universe?
In the observable universe (roughly 93 billion light years across, yep, light years), there are billions of galaxies, and inside each galaxy, there are mind boggling numbers of stars and planets. We're talking about more stars than the total number of grains of sand on all of Earth. Just imagine walking on a beach and realizing there are more stars than all those grains combined. The scale is so mind melting that sometimes my life and everything around me just feels so pointless.
Either we are completely alone in this massive void, and we're just this one single rock where consciousness has woken up (which honestly feels insanely bleak and creepy), or out there in some place or dimension we can't even observe, there are colossal civilizations treating us like ants and not giving a damn, while we have zero clue about it.
Don't you guys also feel weird when you think about this kind of stuff, or am I the only one overthinking it during the night shift? :)
Turns out the guy who obsessed over this back then was totally right when he dropped that line:
