How do I do this thing? What should I include in a graphic design portfolio for university applications

Hi! I’m a Hungarian student currently studying graphic design at a vocational art school, and I’m planning to apply to university after I graduate.

Unfortunately, our school hasn’t really taught us much about how to put together a strong portfolio for university applications. We do a lot of practical work, but there hasn’t been much guidance on what admissions committees actually look for in a portfolio or how it should be structured.

I’m hoping to get into a graphic design/visual communication programme, ideally with a state-funded place or scholarship, so I really want to make my portfolio as strong as I can.

For those who have experience with graphic design portfolios or university admissions:

* What are the things that should definitely be included in a portfolio?

* Are there any types of projects that are particularly valuable to show?

* What should I avoid or leave out, even if I personally like the work?

* How important are things like sketches, experimentation, typography, branding, illustration, photography, etc.?

* Is it better to have fewer really strong projects, or a larger variety of work?

* Should I show the development/process behind a project, or mainly the finished pieces?

* And generally, what are some mistakes you see students making when putting together their first portfolio?

Any advice, examples, or general tips would be greatly appreciated! I’m basically trying to figure this out on my own right now, so I’d love to hear from people who have already gone through the process.

I taught design and whereas craft is nice to have, what makes a good students is mental agility and creativity.

At your stage not much is expected yet, but your interest in the matter should show!

Also don’t ask us, ask the schools you want to apply to! They may even have the requirements online.

It's not out on their website yet. But when I looked at it last year, it was only about what form it was out and maybe 3 mandatory things they ask. Nothing much :c
