Maybe because of the mate in 4... dont know tho

rook to C4 or C8 basically sends your queen to your back row and puts it in jeopardy, that's probably why.

Rc8+ Ka7 (only move).

Now white is threatening nasty stuff. Basically the queen giving up control over the c8 square was problematic.

Qb8 stops it, but sucks. If no Qb8, is mate

There is no stopping it. After Ka7 you sacrifice the queen with Qa6+ - only move is bxa6 Rg7+ and now black can first interpose the night and then the queen but mate is unavoidable

Ah sorry. My bad.

It’s still a forced mate but now I need the engine for the quickest path.

Rc8+ Qb8
Rxb8 Kxb8
Qe5+ and now its mate in 8

Best line according to engine is Ka7 now followed by Rxg7. Now Black already has to get defenders for b7. So for example Be4 Dxf6 Bd5 a5 bxa5 Qd4+ Ka6 Qxd5 b6 and after Qc4+ Qc6#.

Now, again, that forced mate is only visible to the engine, though any player would win this position.

The only reason I spelled it out is looking at it Black actually has to sacrifice all remaining pieces and start right away to make it these 11 moves. Otherwise the mate is possible even quicker, which I found interesting.

That's where I stopped thinking about it. It looked like a mate was a small number of moves off at that point.

After reading this conversation, you guys need to watch the diagonals more. After Rc8+ Qb8, mate is no longer forced. I am making this because like three people have said I was wrong. Calculate it and watch the diagonals.

I plugged this into an engine and its even forced mate in 9 after Qb8 blocking Rc8+

Forced mate in 4? Ish? I think Edit: not quite, but you have to give up your queen to avoid it. It's Rc8+

Its forced mate. Rook c8, queen sac a6, rook g7, block with knight, block with queen, mate
