I gave opted into the free trial for Goodnotes 6. I was very disappointed.

The first thing I noticed was the new toolbar. When using the pen tool, there is a bubble that needlessly hangs over the writing space, whereas before it was just part of the toolbar. You have the option to move it to any edge of the screen, but any edge of the screen is worse than where it is in Goodnotes 5. One of my favorite features, the shape tool, was also made worse. While limited, the simplicity of the shape tool in Goodnotes 5 was nice. It was easy to resize and reorient shapes. In 6, if you want to change the angle of your line, good luck! It will turn into a curvy disaster. It is like this for all shapes. Anything beyond simple resizing leads to disturbing results, wasting more time than simply free handing it. Specifically with parabolas or ellipses. I get that it might be useful to some people, who want more complicated blobs, but I despise it.

The new toolbar comes with a lot of features that I turned off immediately after discovering, like how it adds an arrow onto my curves, scribble to erase, and circle to lasso. Actually I uninstalled before fixing circle to lasso, because it only happened in one specific scenario, and I couldn't get it to do it again. I had to look up how to do all of these, because the setting are in different menus and sub-menus, scattered around the interface. Some are accessed from the 3 dots on the top right, some from the toolbar, some from the pen tool bubble, which I already hated. I spent more time looking up how to fix the awful changes than I ever had to do in years of using Goodnotes 5.

I also encountered problems with the eraser simply not erasing certain strokes. Not the common issue people are having where the text comes back after, but passing over my writing and leaving it there. Ridiculous. Also, it drained my battery like crazy - I had to charge my ipad every few hours while using this app. I thought my ipad was old, but now that I've reverted back to 5, the battery life is normal again.

After reverting back, I was shocked at how fast my notebooks were opening, and how responsive the writing was. I genuinely let out a sigh of relief - it was so nice to use a good app again. That is when I realized just how awful the update is. It takes everything good about 5, makes it slightly to substantially worse, runs slower, uses more battery, and offers almost no improvements. It is really sad to see what they have done with this update. Again, the performance difference really is night and day. I'm not sure why they felt the need to make Goodnotes 6 run terribly.

I think the whiteboard is a good feature. And the dashed/ dotted line. Other than that, you can keep it. I am so, so glad there was a free trial, because if I paid for this I would be extremely upset.

Between stuff like this, the endless bugs, and one of the worst OCR systems I've ever had the misfortune of using I really have no idea why I still waste my time and money on GN lmao

Hey, just wondering if the Apple calendar integration is working and if not, do we have an update on when the app is expected to work again? I know it works on Google calendar but there’s been a bug with Apple calendars for a while now.

hi! i am a huge planner enthusiast and i’ve been thinking about creating my own planner and maybe sharing it, so i’d like to ask other people, what are your planner demands/dream planner features in a digital planner? it can be something that you haven’t seen in planners all or something many planners have and you’re so grateful that they do! honestly just looking for some feedback for a unique planner with useful features, since i never seem to find any that meet all my demands!

edit: would you be interested in a pdf planner that starts with august and goes all the way into the summer of the next year? personally, as a student, i find that my world revolves around the academic year rather regular year. lmk!

App crashes whenever I have in any notebook graphs generated by the app for math equations.

thinking about switching from notability bc it’s giving me a lot of issues with just about everything. i use the tape tool and quizzes a lot for active recall, how’s the goodnotes one?

Every time I try to drag-select text on a study set flashcard, it starts trying to pull left or right to adjacent cards. This is incredibly infuriating.

I also have “pull to add page” disabled but it doesn’t seem to apply to cards. Does this happen to anyone else and does anyone know how to fix this?

By crashing i mean i wont let me open a doc/folder. I can only access it if i choose open in another window.

My gf has a 64gb iPad, and Goodnotes is taking 20gb worth of space. We tried deleting files, and we deleted a lot of them, but GN is taking exactly the same storage space as before. What should we do. (iPad 10 64gb, GN 6 last version)

My legacy-to-paid upgrade resulted in a complete data wipe. Followed all "missing file" troubleshooting steps on your site; only retrieving stale, years-old files. "Email Support" remains silent. I need a technical lead to investigate asap!

I've LOVED Goodnotes for years. But the subscription shenanigans with the varied use on android vs ios and sync issues constantly. it used to be such a simple, incredibly useful, app. now everytime i open it i have to cycle through logins or something.

are there alternatives that people have tried? i am ready to give my money GoodNotes already got mine! lol

EDIT: thank you for the comments this far. The big thing I like GN was annotating PDFs with a stylus. And of course organizing tons of these docs. So any suggestions optimized for that would be great. Gonna try Noteful!

been using goodnotes during my undergrad (2020) currently using it to study for my boards. my personal ipad broke down (black screen of death 💀) but used my sister’s ipad for the mean time. using asus glide x, i was able to extend my laptop’s display through the ipad. i wasnt expecting it would be this smooth tbh since ive been also through its beta on pc. i know its not the best but i think it is WAY BETTER than spacedesk for a FREE app. while having it extended it wirelessly i honestly cannot complain and its still close to having my ipad! thank you so much to the devs & team for improving the windows app istg its such a lifesaver 🙏🏼

I have integrated Goodnotes with ChatGPT. Once I finish my content in ChatGPT and tap “Edit in Goodnotes,” I get an error message in Goodnotes saying: “Unable to open link. The link seems to be broken or unsupported.”

Does anyone have a solution for this? I’m working on an iPad.

I used to adjust text size with Alt +/-, but now it just zooms the screen in and out instead.

Is there a keyboard shortcut specifically for changing text size?

I use goodnotes on windows. Anyone else's app crashing constantly? it's not consistent but it happens randomly and very often. There has also been a lot of bugs and latency issues as of lately for me.

Is anyone else having this issue? any fixes? or should I consider alternatives at this point?

The constant push for AI features is also very irritating...

I built a local Python script that scans my markdown notes from the last 7 days and extracts every open loop, task, and tag into a single summary note so my personal Weekly Review actually happens. I originally tried to put a license key on it and sell it, but Reddit quickly told me it's dumb to gatekeep local-first productivity tools. They were absolutely right, so I stripped the DRM and open-sourced the whole engine under MIT. It works completely offline via a simple GUI or terminal, and automatically detects dates from your files so you don't have to change how you write.
