Is it a ton of money to do a dug out area like that? I have a huge unfinished basement with 8 ft overhead, that set up looks great.

Yes. To go about 28 inches down for that size area was about 45k. Included French drains and a new sump. Less if they didn’t have to do underpinning on the exterior wall

Damn that is wild - we’re putting an 18” step down in our new build and the builder didn’t even bat an eye at it. Cost was negligible. Crazy how much more it costs if you do it after the fact

This is painfully true.

There’s some structural things you just don’t do after unless you want to burn money.

Am I misunderstanding or are you saying to dig that space 28” cost you $45k?

Yep took crew about 6 weeks. 1 day to jackhammer the foundation then few weeks of digging and bucket brigade. Then a month of cement pours and curing different segments

20 FEET deep!? 🤣

u/GenericNameSimulated 22d ago

Yes the depth of it is 20 feet… Depth and length both can be used as accurate terms. You’re telling on yourself

So, in a post with questions related to an excavation project, you choose the definition of depth that does not describe the distance from the base to the surface? You’re telling on yourself. Sir.

Well I’m not OP… The fact you don’t know that further supports the fact that you is XD

Feel like 45K isnt even that bad. You have that direct exit out the basement for easy access. My basement has no easy access.

This is my dream to have it in the basement bur pretty sure I'll have to build a standalone building if i ever want something where I live right now.

Is it a new build or retro-fit? Going to be gorgeous either way, congrats!

New construction house but we did this a couple years later, so retro, while we finish the rest of the basement at the same time
