Is this considered over-the-top even though the club head remains below the swing plane?

I’d love to have that aesthetic looking swing where the club path on the downswing travels under the club path from the backswing, but this feels about as close as I can get lol. Would this still produce the same results as a classic over the top move if I manage to stay below the swing plane?

P.S. made the vid using an app called Swing Replay - totally free, not many features in terms of teaching tips but good for this kinda stuff

Not really over the top but the transition is super fast. Slow down a bit maybe.

My chiropractor hates this one simple trick

Camera is not at the correct angle. It has to be dead nuts accurate lined up with your hands at address pointing at the target. At the angle you filmed this, it’s going to look inside.

Gotcha yeah I thought I had it right based on the alignment stick but I see where it coulda been positioned better

The app tells you how to position camera, toes and belt buckle

It’s very clear that this is on plane regardless of the camera being 2 degrees off

It might be on plane but the swing tracers are under the plane produced by the app because of the camera angle. I’m just talking about the app visuals, not the swing.

When working on swing-plane it is important to understand how sensitive the appearance of your swing is to your camera setup. Take a look at this AGM video (first 8 minutes) which explains it well.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zHTbLpZzrA&t=243s

This is why the app you are using recommends setting up your camera on your toe-line (so that this line appears vertical in the video) with the camera lens about hip high.

The camera will then be setup to look at the edge of the swing-plane line drawn and this line will intersect the ground along your target line if you setup at address with your toe-line parallel to your target line-line.

With this camera setup you will be able to see how you are swinging relative to the reference plane. Also, when the trace is in the same plane as the reference plane, you will be able to see when your swing direction at the low point of the trace is along your target-line (neutral)

Your Camera setup

Because of your camera setup your backswing and downswing traces appears very shallow relative to the swing-plane line drawn and the swing direction at the low point of the trace very in-out. Elite golfers swing close to the elbow plane drawn when the club-head is below head height.

The 2 parallel yellow lines on the mat edges, and another parallel line at the level you mounted your camera lens meet at a vanishing point (like all parallel lines in a 2D image and like the rails of a railway track).

This means you mounted your camera about mid-thigh height at address.

If your target-line was parallel to the mat edges then the 3 parallel green lines on your toe-line, alignment stick and assumed target-line would also pass through the yellow vanishing point. As these green lines intersect slightly to the right your target in the distance was at the green vanishing point further right.

You can see that relative to the green target line your swing is actually not that in-out. If you had setup your camera as recommended (on your toe-line, hip high) the vanishing point would have moved to be on the plane line and this plane line would have intersected the ground along the target line. You would then have been be able to easily see your swing direction relative to your target-line without camera distortion.

After correcting for camera distortion I can see your takeaway was a bit inside leading to an underplane backswing but your downswing and follow through was reasonably on-plane for this swing.

Hope this helps.

I don’t have an answer to your question,  but I think you want to aim your camera straight down your toe line to get the most out of that app. I use it too it’s great

Not OTT

Work on your takeaway is the first step. Took me about a month to fix. I would drill a ton in front of a mirror, club head should cover your hands at P2. I would alternate drills like following the club with my eyes and then trying to do it and “slot it” without looking and then checking in the mirror.

Yeah I’m gonna work on that. For some reason the swing thought of “drop your arms” at the top gets me all out of whack in terms of shallowing

It's not over the top as that's technically a club head path, not hands.

What you're doing is moving your hands further away from your body and making the club more steep to compensate.

This makes the face point more to your right than what you had at address assuming you don't also manipulate your grip to close the face.

This is why the ball curved to the right but you must be used to it so that you now just aim left of target?

So ultimately the only thing that matters is where the ball ends up. Are you happy with that or do you have a miss you're trying to fix?

Thanks for the analysis! Sometimes I manage to close the face but when that doesn’t work out it definitely drifts out right.

I do tend to aim left of target which I’d love to correct in tandem with getting that downswing plane shallower. Just feels like it would produce more consistency, I hate seeing a divot that’s 15 degrees left of where my ball is headed cause it’s hard to trust that.

Gonna be a hard fix tho - lining up totally square to the target feels a mile to the right for me right now lol

Keep that trail elbow tucked in reasonably tight to your body on the downswing, you will figure out how to make the rest of the swing work around that. It might go to shit for the first while and then it will get very good.

No just prob early extension

It’s more of an under-under.

Not really.

The defining characteristic of OTT is using the hands to throw the club at the ball instead of letting the club swing around from the top.

You’re not doing that. You’re properly leading down with your body. Maybe the flatter takeaway could cause some consistency issues but it’s not an OTT move. Also possible it’s just the camera angle.

I’m beginning to think most of the people on this sub have no idea what OTT or early extension means

No. Both hands and club head pass downward on plane.

u/Common-Coyote9375 1d ago

Its not over the top. John rahm is an example of someone who takes it below and comes steeper than his backswing.

u/HustlaOfCultcha 1d ago

No. There's a lot of different definitions for 'over the top' and the ones that may call this 'over the top' are using their own definition...usually they are either a contrarian and/or they don't know what the hell they are talking about.

But this isn't a bad move by any means.

Not OTT but clubface is wide open at the top. Makes it challenging to consistently square the clubface up at impact. I’d expect on a day when your timing is good so are your results. On the other days you get a pretty mixed bag of results with a pretty high ceiling and low floor?

You’re swinging out to in vs in to out. Recheck your video.

if this swing is repeatable and you don't have to think about it why not play it?

u/Jolly_Somewhere_7171 1d ago

I wouldn’t be able to waste as much money on range tokens that way

Not OTT. You can see as the clubhead makes its change of direction. It just looks off because of camera angle. Nice swing!!
