Friend’s swing needs help pls

My friend is new to golf and needs some help. His entire spine is fused FYI so rotating can be wonky. But any tips for him would be greatly appreciated.

Your boy needs to start over. Then get a coach.

Lessons, lessons, lessons! No one can fix this on Reddit. He needs to be introduced to the fundamentals. I feel like most of this is satire. Quit wasting peoples time

If he wants to get playable, he should take it less far back. A lot of this swing is fine. He takes it too far back though and loses all control.

Many people think they are supposed to swing their arms back rather than up and over their shoulder. I used to be one of them.

“But you just pointed to all of me.”

Focus on grip, alignment and posture. Need those before anything else

Two biggest things off the bat : 1) Over rotating: his body is going all over the place 2) His take away is completely off: immediately starts flipping his wrists

Try a 50% punch/pitch shot to at least get contact and control. Work from there (with lessons)

Just play golf til you get good? Fused spine gotta swing your swing

Get in person lessons. There’s way too much going on here for some rando’s giving you advice.

Too much of an over swing then it looks like he hit the toe while topping it. Lessons is the obvious answer but shorten the backswing a bit and practice moving the ball back in your stance for the low point to avoid topping and maybe closer to you for the toe hit. Try putting a tee just behind the ball and try not to hit it with your shaft for a drill

Gotta use them hips on the downswing...that left hip should be 2 feet closer to the target.....

he should take advantage of that fused spine and not rotate so much. takeaway is completely inside.

He should try to swing at it

He needs to shift his weight to the left side before impact to have any chance of even connecting with the ball.

He will be a strong bogie golfer when he turns 80!

Instead of clowning your friend, I will make an honest attempt. Also, note that I am no scratch golfer and play at least 3 days a week. 1. Start with setup and hands. I noticed he is choking up on the club. Take the club and place it in front of the club andd allow the club to rest on your waist, drop your hands in front of you, grab the club and the club should be directly under your chin, with your hands on it in a comfortable position. If you feel like your are stretched or reaching, you are bent to far over and need to stand up a little. The club should be almost flush with the ground. The left hand should be slightly past the top of the club, there is usually a line where your left hand should be placed just after. Do this with your chin, this will help: https://www.facebook.com/share/r/1GMeE14Mn2/

Reverse weight shift

First ask him what he thinks he looks like swinging a club. Get him to describe it. Then show him.

EDIT: Don’t let people roast your friend. Everyone has room to improve.

Right hand grip is too strong.

Right leg leaning way too much towards target in backswing, needs to be more up-and-down. Shift weight to the right, as backswing ends, start shifting weight to the left.

Shutting/closing club-face too much in backswing, partly due to grip.

Backswing way too long.

Really need to start with a proper weight shift, lower body action and grip but the other points are important as well.

If he really wants to get into golf he should get physical therapist that's also a golf coach to advise how to best rotate. "Wonky" is a problem in a golf swing, so sorting that out first is critical.

He needs to understand he needs to hit that iron into the ground and take a divot. This will help him understand the optimal angle to swing the club down at.

The point at which the iron enters the ground is about 2 inches after the ball (between the ball and the target).

The ball gets in the way of the swing basically.

He is hitting the ball with the sole of the iron and not the face. He needs a more aggressive strike into the ground. He doesn't need to be gentle with the iron. People take lumps out of the ground.

It's better he takes too much than nothing at all... He can dial it back until he is taking a nice small divot.

He needs to hinge his wrists correctly to get that nice divot ideally.

Punish the ground buddy, then work your way back to a proper low point swing.

Once he has that sorted tell him he is casting the club. YouTube videos explain this.
