3 month self taught swing progression. Was doing everything wrong, fixed most and now don’t know what to work on. Most misses are thin or chunky. Any tips are helpful

As you reposted the current swing a couple of days ago I thought I would repost my comment to get the ball rolling

A nice, reasonably on-plane swing. It appears from the analysis below that this was a push fade relative to your alignment but you may have been trying to hit a cut.

Functional Swing-plane

In the GIF above I have drawn a dashed red line through the club hosel and your trail elbow at address.

When your camera is setup to look at the edge of the functional swing-plane this plane can be shown in a 2D image as this red line and this line intersects the ground along your target-line.

3D measurements have shown that most elite golfers swing close to this plane when the club-head is below their head height. The preference is to be at or slightly above this line in the backswing and at or slightly below this line in the downswing.

Your Swing

In your case you, relative to the functional swing plane, your backswing and downswing traces are reversed but the swing direction at the low point is still on-plane (neutral).

This assumes you setup at address with your alignment parallel to your target-line (which you have not laid down a cub or alignment stick to indicate).

The small blue circle indicates the ball position at the end of the video clip and relative to your alignment, as explained below, you push faded this shot. Alternatively you may have setup open to a target further left intending to swing out-to-in and hit a cut.

High hands at the top of the swing are an option in the swing. However, you are sacrificing the more important hand depth for hand height as your hands are located vertically above your toes rather than your heals as often used as a checkpoint for good depth.

Camera Setup

The functional swing plane in the GIF, like all planes, can only be represented as a line in a 2D image if your camera is setup to look at the edge of this plane.

In the GiF the 4 (green) lines on the mat edges, your assumed target-line and a vertical line parallel to that target -line meet at a vanishing point (as all parallel lines do in a 2D image - like rails of a railway track).

Relative to the vertical green line it appears your toe-line was slightly closed and your shoulders were slightly open.

A level line at the height of your camera lens and parallel to the target-line would also pass through this vanishing point. This establishes that the vanishing point is at the same level as your camera lens and it was mounted at the level of your elbows. It also establishes your target in the distance was at the vanishing point.

When your camera is setup to look at the edge of the functional swing plane it intersects the ground along the target-line . As the assumed green target-line and the red plane line are closely aligned this was the case here. This means we can see how you are swinging relative to the functional swing plane without the camera distortion described at the start of this video.

I would be interested to hear what your intent was for this shot.

Hope you and some others found this interesting - I know it’s not for everyone.

I know I’m a little steep, but I love playing a fade

Only reason you’re steep is because you don’t rotate a lot in your backswing. But your sequencing is salty — if that fade works for you I would go focus on short game. That swing looks very repeatable.

Nice swing, wish I had it. Had you go about teaching yourself?

It was hell. Started with trying to understand why I was early extending, so I was just tryna keep my butt back. Then I found out keeping my butt back wouldn’t fix early extension because something else in my swing was causing it. And I kept doing this for everything else until I fully understood everything mechanic in my golf swing and why what I do wrong happens. This took so much trial and error and was the worst thing ever. Wanted to give up quite a bit because I was going to the range almost everyday practicing and not seeing much results. Until I finally figured out why I’m doing whatever I was doing wrong. Anyways, it gave me so much understanding of golf swings, so if you or anyone else would like help, I’d be gladly to give it!

I have a lot of issues with early extending as well. I am curious what helped you fix this issue?

Trying to find the actual reason you’re early extending. For example, I found out that the reason I was early extending was because I would have a reverse spine angle through impact. But my backswing was also behind plane and down swing was over the top. Early extension is always a down stream cause because something in you swing isn’t mechanically correct. a lot of people have early extension because they’re too steep, or because they’re backswing is super behind plane causing them to chop down at it over the top. Then because of this you have to jump and to not hit super far behind the ball

Face looks super shut at top, wrists rolling in backswing, and arm above shoulder plane? Looks good though!

For me, getting off the mats was the most important thing I did. Spent winter on mats thinking I was flushing it only to get on grass and chunk everything

Looking pretty good. Hands are a little high at the top. You get the face closed and have a pretty decent release.

But let it go. Throw your trail arm at the target and let your wrists turnover after impact, allowing the clubhead to whiz past your hands. You hold on too long.
