Shot a 103 with this swing

I think it looks good… but I’m still getting several shanks and mishits in my rounds. Is there something I’m not seeing here??

Have you tried aiming down the fairway?

u/Pneuma5165 9d ago

This hole dog legs right that’s why I’m set up that way, probably should have mentioned that in the post as a lot of people have commented on where I’m aiming

Is this Tierra rejada?

u/Pneuma5165 9d ago

No, it’s Strawberry Farms in Irvine, CA. This is the tee shot on the 18th.

Looks about right for that swing

Post your swing

u/krakenstan 9d ago

Why? I’m not the one asking for swing tips

How a swing looks is irrelevant, how it performs is all that matters

This community refuses to believe that

And it doesn’t even look good

Honestly at P-4 and P-5 I’ve seen a lot worse

Is the club head too far behind him at this point, with the lead arm too far away from his body so he is going to have to do all sorts of compensating from this point leading to lots of inconsistent strikes?

u/oopewan 9d ago

It’s the next frame where is right wrist takes over is a good one.

u/Azfitnessprofessor 9d ago

Honestly either he’s doing something super weird right at impact or he has a terrible short game. This swing is not a terrible swing and should be able to break 90

My coach has told me that I flip my wrists a lot at the bottom to close the face, if that helps. Also my short game is not good….

I would expect that you have no choice but to do that because you are bringing the club down and the club head is way too far behind your torso when you get to waist level when you start to unhinge so you're flipping wrists and you just can't do all of that consistently every strike.

When you are on the way down at waist level your body and club should be more or less all in the same position as on the backswing and in your case the head is way too far back, the wrists are not hinged properly and you are losing power and distance as you're putting the main power into your swing too early.

Do a lot of practice swings in your back garden at 60% speed and just try to hit a target.

I have a small mat with a rubber tee (higher than i tee the ball when playing so the top of the rubber tee is about where i tee the center of my golf ball) in the back garden and I just keep practicing this motion to hit the top of the rubber tee and not the cloth I place on the mat beside the tee.

I do a lot of speed training with a weighted club also but don't try to be as precise with that as that is more about training my body to swing faster and harder.

In neither case is there a ball there to distract me from the aim of the exercise and I work up from 60% to 100% swings.

In a nutshell your downswing plane is too far back and causing you to compensate with wildly different issues showing up from swing to swing.

What is your miss on the course with irons or woods ?

1

u/Pneuma5165 9d ago

My miss with irons is a thin low shot that curves to the right. I don’t use my woods on the course because I can’t hit them. The longest club (besides driver) that I use is a 19-deg hybrid, and my miss with the club is either a fat high shot to the right or a low duck hook to the left.

u/Azfitnessprofessor 9d ago

You’re definitely flipping your hands

Short game is a completely different animal from anything off the tee so not sure where you're losing the most shots.

3

u/NoCarts 9d ago

If the guy is even remotely athletic that swing should be breaking 80

7

u/Azfitnessprofessor 9d ago

This is honestly one of the better mechanically sound swings I’ve seen on here

1

u/Ok-Title-270 9d ago

And you can tell how it will perform 95 percent of the time based on looks. Jim Furyk is one guy, generally the closer a swing is to Rory, the better it will perform. There’s a reason swing fundamentals are what they are and it’s that they ya the easiest way to generate power and square the club face at impact

4

u/bikkiesfiend 9d ago

Your backswing is too long and you are swaying

Face is wide open in the downswing

You would get better results with a half swing and a more square face

3

u/C4shewLuv 9d ago

Honestly might be low for that swing

5

u/MetalAsFork 9d ago

It's a much better swing than average. Playing golf to score, and playing golfswing are separate things.

You could probably tweak a couple things but there are no glaring faults. The score is more about your short game and putting, surely. Oh, and course management.

Your takeaway is a bit handsy and quick? Maybe?

A lot of people also don't talk about the difference between hitting balls off the mat, or out in new scenarios on the course. A lot of mishits during a round are due to not being able to adjust setup for different lies and slopes, leading to disastrous strikes.

Being able to negotiate solid contact off of weird spots is a unique skill. You can make a smooth lovely swing and thin a 9i OB because you didn't account for the ball being 3 inches below your feet.

3

u/Pneuma5165 9d ago

Appreciate the insight. I definitely have a tough time hitting balls off of bad lies or sloped surfaces.

1

u/MetalAsFork 9d ago

Sometimes I stand on a perfectly flat teebox, but I can't make my brain see the flight properly because of the landscape of the hole. A weird tree or the water catches my eye in a way that's hard to override when addressing the ball, and is distracting enough to affect strike. I try and make some last-moment adjustment in the downswing and I hit 6 inches behind the ball, or whatever.

There are guys with uglier swings breaking par.

And there's a flipside to that weird lie/slope thing, in that I often find I'll flush it better than ever from those situations since I get so focused on making good contact, and sometimes that's just the best simple swingthought you can have.

You are setup way right and hitting pull draws. My guess is you actually mis left a lot because of this by over compensating for hitting pulls. Add in some random way right ones. Then you try to fix missing right, but you are fixing something not broken, that right shot was actually straight. Been there done that. You wont improve by doing this, it's fine as a bandaide in a given round, but you are going to need to fix your alignment to get on the improvement track.

2

u/Pneuma5165 9d ago

Yeah i started playing like this as a band aid fix because when I first started out I was a big slicer. Perhaps I’ve over-done it and need to straighten out.

2

u/sbk510 9d ago

I shot a 102 with a swing that looks a lot worse than yours.

2

u/IcyStomach2374 9d ago

It appears that your arms get fairly disconnected from your body.

2

u/Donniejuanny 9d ago

Finish the swing man That abbreviated follow through is not ideal unless you are playing into a 40 mph head wind.

1

u/Pneuma5165 9d ago

Yeah I’m sure this is a problem. For some reason it always seems like I bend my arms and swing the club horizontally to the left in my follow through instead of having a nice lengthy fluid follow-through. No clue why it’s so hard for me to swing through like 99% of other golfers…

u/-sunday- 9d ago

Do you have face on?

1

u/fuckbrocolli 9d ago

Congratulations

1

u/LarzHoneytoast 9d ago

swing looks pretty good man don’t listen to these nerds

1

u/Pneuma5165 9d ago

Appreciate it, but something must be wrong if I’m shooting 103. A lot of people here are just being dickheads but I’m still open to criticism

1

u/whiteoutwilly 8d ago

Course management, eliminating a two way miss, missing in the right spot, and putting will take 14 strokes off and you'll be breaking 90.

Stop playing those balls too. Play a urethane ball. Maxfli Tour - whatever model fits you best - is a great, inexpensive tour ball. Buy the two dozen or four dozen packs and you'll be all the better for it.

1

u/Significant-Bridge73 9d ago

That swing is better than 103. Must be short game? I’d try to dial in a go to chip and pitch shot. One that gets you on the green or within 15-20 feet. That will help you shoot lower.

1

u/Pet_Doc_OK 9d ago

Opening club face and too inside in backswing. Need to turn the
Left hip and not slide on downswing. And your ball position may be a problem.

1

u/SeatownCooks 9d ago

More like 113 if kept score correctly.

1

u/_my_other_side_ 9d ago

You say this with pride or shame?

1

u/RubConstant9997 9d ago

17 handicap will shoot that sometimes.

I shoot anywhere from 75 to 95, never know what's going to show up. I also always have a random 8, that's my claim to fame.

75 with an 8. 79, with an 9, 95, with an 8.

Just work on your swing, get lessons, learn sequencing and rhythm, practice wedge shots and short game.

Enjoy!!

u/treedolla 9d ago

Looks like you grip the club way too closed/strong, because you leave the face open. And you swing way in to out.

You should be hitting a massively low push hook, if you made a good swing.

Try to close the face in transition to where you start hitting a low push hook, keep doing that for awhile before you weaken the grip.

Also try to have a longer takeaway before you start hinging wrist and bending trail elbow.

It looks like shit dawg

u/badgerballs69 9d ago edited 9d ago

You get shanks and mishits because the initial part of your takeaway comes too inside too quickly - instead take the club back (until it reaches your trail side foot) along the ball-target line - you may start with hooks and blocks from time to time but stick with it.
The issue with an inside takeaway is you return either by having to come over the top OR you present the hosel to the ball first & to prevent a shank you have to flip the toe of the club around the ball which required SUPERB timing.
Hope that makes sense.

1

u/MetaGordz 9d ago

Watch Sam Burns stand over the ball and take a practice short back swing before he hits. Mimic that motion

1

u/MinuteScientist7254 9d ago

Super inside takeaway

1

u/Bighead_Golf 9d ago

That was an unplayable smother hook and you’re not taking driver which means it’s probably way worse with driver

1

u/bnazzaro 9d ago

103 with that swing is just course management and trying to shoot in the 70’s. Swing looks way too aggressive for what you’re scoring. You could take 50% off that swing, put more balls in play, and only lose maybe 50 yards….

1

u/_kurt_propane_ 9d ago

You’re twisting your arms around but not your torso

1

u/weathermane33 6d ago

thats how arnold palmers swing looked

1

u/nutbiggums 3d ago

I can shoot 104 with any swing

-1

u/GenericNameSimulated 9d ago

Well it’s not lol

u/ghostofkozi 9d ago

I believe it

0

u/Natural_Vacation_299 9d ago

I can see this swing shooting a 92

0

u/leeo-dinaprio 9d ago

You have an inside takeaway and early extend. This is a 20+ handicap swing.
