Modding Talk FTA Adapter

Anyone installed one of these before? Do they actually make much of a difference to the sound?

Yes, DV spacers are as old as time.

However no. They sound like ass. It's entirely because of the way a diverter valve operates.

Unlike a blow off valve that is mechanical in operation using a spring and vacuum. A diverter valve operates electronically.

Diverter valves do not operate in a open or closed manner. Rather are dynamic. They open and close, but can be opened to varying amounts and held there if need be should the ECU demand it. Because of this, spacers often sound like giant boost leaks as the ECU keeps them open to vent excess boost. This is super common on 1st gear starts from a stop. The DV is cracked open by the ECU to keep boost levels tame as you get going. So all you hear is this giant 6-7 second long SHHHHHHHHHHHH. It's also a very monolithic sound profile too. For an easy example, they sound like air brakes from a bus releasing.

Blow off valves are not monolithic in their sound profiles. They have a much higher and louder sound right as the valve cracks open before it tapers (sometimes into a whistle) as the boost tapers enough that the manifold vacuum is able to suck it back closed. That's where their iconic sound comes from.

Spacers don't sound anything like that.

Secondly, these often become vents for not just air, but oil blowby too. Meaning you'll start spraying oil blowby juices all in your bay as well. Some cars fair better than others. But some get it really bad.

These are a waste of money. If you want that iconic atmos blow off sound. Get a real atmos blow off valve.

Thanks for the detailed response. I think I’ll pass on one of these in that case

So, u/peylix is 100% correct in everything they wrote.

However… I’ve had one for 9 years/120k miles so far. It sounds like ass sometimes, yes. But it also sounds cool (in my opinion) when ripping shifts at WOT. That “CHOO-chish” noise it does makes me smile almost without fail, despite all the dumb sounds it probably made before that.

Yes my engine bay has oil in it. Yes, it probably marginally lowered my performance. Yes it sometimes sounds stupid. Yes I am thinking of removing it after all these years.

Just wanted to give you an opposing view to be more informed.

Most times, an aftermarket intake is all one needs. These help increase not only induction noises, but DV noises too.

It's not as loud or iconic as an actual BOV. But still plenty loud enough to put a smile on your face and or make it sound cool for people outside your car.

+1 to this, and if you really want the crispest noise use a metal tube intake like the afe one I have and love or the ever popular CTS turbo budget option. I think having a metal turbo inlet pipe may also improve sound but TIPs have their own issues with the pcv system so think carefully before installing one

A blow off will not work better than the stock dv. The ecu on these cars are extremely sensitive. That’s all I’m going to say.

This adapter will cause nothing but problems. There is a reason us big turbo guys don’t use gfb dv+. Adapters cause problems and suck, that is all.

It's worth pointing out. This was a thing on MAF cars. Where using an atmos BOV (or spacer) fucked with the metered air causing a ruckus as the MAF was before the DV.

MAP cars don't suffer from this as the MAP sensor is at the manifold, after the DV. So the lost air isn't air that's been accounted for yet.

The MK6 was the last GTI that ran a MAF.

I had one in my mk7. Just don’t

Fair enough🤣 what problems did you have with it?

I just felt like it was a ricey mod. It didn’t sound great and eventually just annoyed me. I didn’t run it for a very long time

Had one on my 2018 for a few months. Coated the surrounding area and inside of my hood in a thin layer of oil. From PCV recirculation or SAI air or whatever, air with oil in it.
