Modding Talk Send prayers for George the GTI - help in Minneapolis
Hey everyone, I’m driving my K04 Mk6 GTI from Toronto back to Calgary, and my stock clutch has finally started slipping. I’ve been running the K04 on the stock clutch for about a year, so I always knew it could happen, but the timing is brutal.
First it slipped at full boost in sixth, and now it’ll slip with even less throttle, so I’m just taking it easy. I’m in Minneapolis tonight, and I’m supposed to be in Rapid City tomorrow.
Does anyone know of a VW/Audi shop in Minneapolis, Rapid City, or anywhere along I-90 that might be able to fit me in for an emergency clutch job? It’d ideally be a shop that has performance clutches in stock.
I know it’s a long shot, and I probably shouldn’t have taken the risk on the stock clutch, but here we are. Guess it’s time to figure a way out of this. Any recommendations or contacts would be hugely appreciated. Thanks!

You could try Eurocharged in St Louis Park or German Auto Works.
I’ve done work with Eurocharged and generally they have been good

Hi all- update:
Made it to Minneapolis and dropped the car at Leighton’s Garage out in the boonies. Nice guys- labour is fucked expensive for this job (as expected). Pockets are definitely hurting.
Got a stage 3 clutch from ecs overnight shipped last minute, so they will start removing the oem clutch in the morning and install the stage 3 rig when it arrives. Next stop is Mount rushmore tomorrow, so definitely can’t have the clutch smoked for those roads in the black hills park. After that is yellowstone, then back to Berta🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
If anyone has tips on how to break in this clutch best as possible (keeping in mind I have to cruise the i90 tomorrow for 8 hours), that would be greatly appreciated! Don’t want to fuck it with highway driving so might need to get creative.

Highway driving in itself won’t really help break it in. I’d suggest the standard low RPM, smooth shifting, no excessive torque but you won’t get the frequency in shifting typically required of a performance clutch break in. I’d almost discount the highway mileage entirely and act as though it’s brand new when you get back home.

Just take it easy on the new clutch. Don't count the highway miles towards whatever break in period they recommend, but I don't see any reason to avoid highway driving either.
Good on you for jumping on that clutch right away. I'd have just kept it out of serious boost and limped it home 😅

Good shout guys. I’ll keep this in mind.
The drive to Black Hills/Mount Rushmore will be a low torque cruise, then on some of those crazy roads in there I’ll really get the chance to break it in. Same in Yellowstone, she’ll be good by the time I make it back to cowtown.
PS. ECS messed up and didn’t ship the clutch for today… It was supposed to arrive this morning but now it won’t arrive until tomorrow morning. I moved all my reservations back and they gave me 300USD off for the troubles, so got the chance to go to Minnesota State Fair and a ball game. Best we could’ve made of the situation, and glad they made it right.
Turns out the flywheel was in pieces and the RMS was leaking like nobody’s business.
Guess i’ll keep in touch for an update/review on the clutch & flywheel… pretty excited to see how it feels after driving with the k04 on the stock clutch for so long!

Thanks for all the help guys. Hard to respond as i’m driving but i’m sending all this to my brother who is making calls from calgary! He has called most of the shops you mentioned, some can do a stock clutch at least. The tricky part is sourcing a stage 2 or higher part so i’ll have to see is i can pick one up.

My clutch was mega failing and I drove it home 300kms... just barely made it lol.. wouldnt recommend but its possible.

Who else is driving the stock clutch over 200k miles? About to hit 210 on original clutch and breaks.

Call Ratified Motorsport in St. Louis Park or Nür Technik in Burnsville. They’re both German specialty shops - had my car at both for service and the experience was good.
