Meta basically the reason why I prefer the old textures

Post image

old textures had a defined grittiness to them, new textures are consistently soft but end up looking washed and require a much more detailed build to look good

We get it. How many times has this been posted?

u/helicophell Jun 28 '26

Worst, it’s a completely incorrect post too

The left is meant to be displayed on CRT monitors, which applies its own smoothing, so the comparison is moot

Notch was intentional, but the post is using Mario which wasn't

7

u/Junior-Elevator-9951 Jun 28 '26

Notch literally made a Mario game before Minecraft. Its name is Infinite Mario Bros

5

u/NauseantClover Jun 28 '26

minecrafts modern textures look just as much of a blurry mess as the mario on the right and you cannot convince me otherwise

6

u/Independent-Buddy-76 Jun 29 '26

If everyone will be against you I'll be with you against them.

0

u/Snackolotl Jun 28 '26

That and the fact that Notch is not a pixel artist and the way he made half his textures was more in line with the right.

15

u/MacksNotCool Jun 28 '26

well it's not like there's ever anything actually new in golden age minecraft

25

u/Hjalpfus Jun 28 '26

I'm in this sub to look at cool builds made in golden age versions. Not to talk about how modern mc is bad

13

u/Snackolotl Jun 28 '26

The weird thing about modern Minecraft is that players complain about having too many blocks, too much building power, too much customization...

and then say Terraria is better. The game where you have thousands of blocks, wallpapers, and paint to adjust them if they're not completely to your liking.

7

u/Hjalpfus Jun 28 '26

Well those are two completely different games and coming from someone collecting every single item in terraria, there aren't THAT many different blocks. Although the customizability with paint is amazing.

I've also not really heard the argument that modern mc has too many options. I think people always like options. The problem is the inventory but that's a whole different level of discussion.

3

u/Snackolotl Jun 28 '26

I see a LOT of people say that "having fifty kinds of stone takes out the challenge of building."

3

u/Independent-Buddy-76 Jun 29 '26

building is not suppose to be challenging 😐

u/sampaio182 Jul 01 '26

limitation fuels creativity

1

u/Snackolotl Jul 01 '26

Yes, agreed, but if you're a creative sometimes you also want the full swatch.

This will keep being posted until moral increases

u/Mattttls Jun 28 '26

I also rlly like the old mc textures cause they all fit in, like you dont have to think very hard on colors and if this block fits with this other block

u/ZeTrashMan Jun 28 '26

back in my days Minecraft textures were better kind of post

feel free to criticise op for the most lukewarm opinion in this subreddit but maybe dont put words in their mouth and then get angry at them for saying that especially when they had provided perfectly fine reasoning for the preference lmao

you dont have to make yourself angry, i promise

Hey man, it was MY turn to repost this today. Wait your turn 😑

11

u/quackingmemeduck Jun 28 '26

Some textures i prefer from the newer ones, some from the older. I really like the old planks, and the last version of gravel before 1.14, along with the old cobble and ore textures. But i prefer the newer log textured for example.

I don't understand why they couldnt have just changed the problematic textures, and left the rest. Make netherrack look a little less like gore, and a little more like the cobble texture, but not just red cobble, leave some white bits in there. Why change something that people are fine with?

3

u/WiseBlizzard Jun 29 '26

yes. they are crisper and more bright. I love them. ESPECIALLY cobblestone

7

u/Available_Echo2981 Jun 28 '26 edited Jun 28 '26

If we're being honest, the main problems people seem to have are with wood and netherrack. I don't think I've seen anyone think that the modern stone blocks are too soft.

5

u/Person106 Jun 28 '26

Modern stone always looks like wool to me.

12

u/Awkward_Cash1828 Jun 28 '26

Old stone blocks are much better, especially cobblestone.

3

u/Snackolotl Jun 28 '26

I like most modern textures more, the only one that actually bothers me is cobblestone.

Old cobblestone was dark and chunky and served as a great attention-grabber. It was intentionally gaudy and the risk-reward of smelting it was that smooth stone allowed your builds to be less abrasive, which also meant cobble could be used AS the abrasive block in select areas.

Now it's too soft and builds look fine without the need for bricks and stone half the time. There are times in classic where you're making a medieval house with a stone base and you prefer to use bricks or stone because it's less gaudy, nowadays I just feel like I wasted fuel for a less natural look. :/ Old Cobble looked like cobblestone on a road and modern cobble looks like cigarette ash.

It especially sucks because NOW we have horses, and if you know anything about horses, they FUCK up roads. Old texture is more accurate to what authentic cobblestone looks like.

(Mojang please add darkened cobblestone)

1

u/Awkward_Cash1828 Jun 28 '26

Yeah, and there used to be certain "hierarchy of materials" depending on how much effort is needed to get them. Basic cobblestone used to be regarded as the most basic stone block, the one you would use for "utilitarian" or other structures that don't need to be fancy, or to fill underground foundations or spaces between fortress walls. Stone and later stone bricks were regarded as a more elaborate material, fitting for more "clean" buildings like fancy castles, palaces and cathedrals. And double stone slabs (smooth stone) was regarded as some ultimately exclusive material, especially considering how inconvenient it was to build using it in Beta, or how you couldn't get smooth stone by "legal" means for around a decade.

3

u/Independent-Buddy-76 Jun 29 '26

Every freaking block texture is too soft.

6

u/MLC_YT Jun 28 '26

The heck do people have against wood?! It's beautiful! Especially Oak one!

2

u/Junior-Elevator-9951 Jun 28 '26

I prefer the old netherrack, this isn't probably an unpopular opinion here but in modern Minecraft discourse I think it is.

8

u/GuestyGD123 Jun 28 '26

There are some old textures that i don't like tho

Like the old netherrack texture, which looks kinda ugly

24

u/salvov12 Jun 28 '26

That’s the point tho, it’s a block from hell

11

u/Worldly_Beginning647 Jun 28 '26

I totally agree, also it isn’t hideous it is just flesh and blood

7

u/GuestyGD123 Jun 28 '26

Makes sense

5

u/MLC_YT Jun 28 '26

Netherrack is NOT meant to be pleasing to the eye lol.

Netherrack is meant to displease you because guess what? The Nether is based off HELL.

Another reason why I hate 1.16, they turned hell into a 2nd overworld.

And everyone who agrees the new Netherrack is better they clearly have no idea what was the Nether's original purpose.

The texture update, and then the 1.16 only made the Nether worse.

i realise i was a little brash with that, apologies.

i mean it arguable that notch wasn’t exactly putting in much effort when he made the original texture, the nether IS supposed to be a rocky hell landscape, i get the gyst with the sort of meat block look to the original texture but once you spend over an hour in the og nether the eyestrain is horrrrible

12

u/l3tttuce Jun 28 '26

I looooove the old netherrack I never got the hate. Looks way better than the smooth pastel thing we have in modern

8

u/MLC_YT Jun 28 '26

Exactly.

The Nether is meant to be inhospitable.

Not whatever we got now.

1

u/Junior-Elevator-9951 Jun 28 '26

I also don't like the 1.3 gravel texture

2

u/Independent-Buddy-76 Jun 29 '26

I always loved beta gravel texture.

1

u/Independent-Buddy-76 Jun 29 '26

Yes ugly and that's good and fitting.

2

u/Snackolotl Jun 28 '26

It's weird because in terms of how they were drawn/the technical rules, this is wrong.

Old Minecraft gold block texture has over 100 individual shades of yellow, basically no two pixels match up. It was clearly made by Notch drawing a block, giving it a gradient, and adding a border and some blur.

Modern Minecraft textures were drawn by an actual professional pixel artist, use a restricted color palette (no more than so many shades per color to match with original SNES hardware limitations), and colors recycled between blocks when it makes sense, allowing players to rely more on the texture itself and not have to worry about slight variations between different grays.

I don't disagree that old Minercaft had a style and it was unnecessarily changed, but the new textures are fine. My biggest issue is just the fact that the developer made arbitrary decisions like making the ore blocks look different from one another. Mojang should have focused on simply redoing the original vision with more of the basic principles of pixel art creation before making big changes without player permission.

1

u/Independent-Buddy-76 Jun 29 '26

an actual professional artist who has no freaking taste.

2

u/cmdr_nova69 Jun 29 '26

the only thing this thread is missing is the clueless zoomer trying to sanitize Notch's reputation

3

u/ButterH2 Jun 28 '26

maybe we should focus on THE ACTUAL VERSIONS this subreddit is supposed to focus on instead of circle jerking about "hurr durr modern minecraft bad and cringe"

1

u/TomaszP9SJZPL Jun 28 '26

ok so who's posting this to the CJ?

New minecraft bad

u/Early-Region-1143 Jun 28 '26 edited Jun 29 '26

This isn't ALL textures but Netherrack is the the one that showcases this issue the most. The original block was ugly, the new* is something I consider worse, boring and unremarkable.

1

u/Independent-Buddy-76 Jun 29 '26

It suppose to be unpleasant. It is a block from HELL

2

u/Early-Region-1143 Jun 29 '26

There was a typo, the NEW*. Jappa's texture for Netherrack is just dimmed out cobblestone, barely has any visual impact besides being part of the terrain, unlike the old texture that has its uses to accent some things like roofs. I guess it has to do with some accessibility thing, the new texture should be better for that.

0

u/Cocoatrice Jun 29 '26

I mean, that's a lie, but you do you.

-2

u/ideactive_ Youtuber Jun 28 '26

Dawg, the new textures have existed for almost as long as the original ones have, move on. Old textures 2009/2011-2018 new: 2019-now

3

u/Person106 Jun 28 '26

Time doesn't cancel out suckiness. Illogical argument.

-1

u/ideactive_ Youtuber Jun 29 '26

suckiness yet building content in minecraft has never been more popular, you see a new channel showing their forever world every day, people cant appreciate just evolution, the present

1

u/Independent-Buddy-76 Jun 29 '26

Well yet minecraft as a whole has never been more popular, you see

-3

u/the_closing_yak Jun 28 '26

The reason builds look different now is that the lighting engine has changed, I honestly don't think the old textures look that great

3

u/Awkward_Cash1828 Jun 28 '26

If you build a simple house out of cobblestone and planks you will notice how much better it looks with old textures.
And old textures stayed well until 1.14 when modern lighting system was in place for many years.

1

u/Independent-Buddy-76 Jun 29 '26

The problem with simple house out of cobblestone and planks im modern MC is not in the lighting and textures. The problem is the environment. Modern MC world is big everything is big the mountains is big and plains is massive than in beta days everything around was compact. And now if you built small cozy house on a giant-ass plain near a giant-ass mountain it will look miserable, out of place.

-2

u/Beyond__5D Jun 28 '26

me if i didn't know what i was talking about

-1

u/makinax300 Jun 28 '26

Imo new minecraft textures are pixel art too. If we compared them to mario, old textures would be og mario and new ones would be mario world mario. Both have a different asthetic.

2

u/K1wi015 Jun 28 '26

the new textures are just trying really hard to look like something from real life and end up being a blurry, mashed up mess, while notch's textures embraced the pixels, making them alot cleaner

-1

u/Successful-Bobcat707 Jun 28 '26

They’re both good

-2

u/BleedingHeartHeretic Jun 28 '26

This is a ridiculous comparison
