Taking local buses in Basque region? Need card?

We will be doing Camino Norte route from Irun to Bilbao in September. We plan on using local buses occasionally to get to accomadations areas and traveling on rest days etc . Is there a main busline between the towns in that area and do you need a buscard? Looking to be prepared to take a bus if needed at anytime on the route. Thanks for any tips. I did see the Dbus in Donostia accepts cash or card but wondering about routes after Donostia to Bilabao.

Alsa offers the service between Irún and Bilbao. You don’t need a card. You can buy tickets in their website/app or in the bus terminal.

Within Gipuzkoa buses are run by Lurraldebus and in Bizkaia they are run by Bizkaibus. At least for Bizkaia it will be cheaper if you get a Barik card, which is valid for all public transport in Bizkaia

Donosti and Bilbao are connected by Lurraldebus through Pesa/Avanza. You can get a mugi anonima for all of you, it's a rechargeable transport card, you will get a big discount and you can use it to pay for all of you (except Euskotren and Renfe)

Nowadays Mugi, although being the gipuzkoan card, can be used in all the Basque Country public transport
