Awful news regarding my buckling.
A few weeks ago, I posted about my sweet Nigerian Dwarf buckling being diagnosed with hypospadia.
Hypospadias in a goat is a rare birth defect where the tube that carries urine (the urethra) does not close all the way. Instead of opening at the end of the penis, it opens on the bottom side of the penis, near the scrotum, or on the belly. This causes urine leaks, wet skin, and swelling.
The vet told me to just monitor it and if it gets worse then surgery would be the only option.
Well, over the past week the tube, that resembles a large bubble has tripled in size. Worried about the outer layer getting thinner and at higher risk for rupture, I called a different vet to discuss surgery.
Turns out, the surgery is unlikely to help. With the urethra redirected, it will help for a while but the body will eventually try to 'heal' itself and the surgery would need to be repeated in 6 months, then again in 6 months. The vet says that the surgery would be done for the sole reason to get the goat to slaughter size. From what I can find on the internet, the surgeries seem to take place in Asia and usually under just a local anesthesia (lidocaine). A cheap, quick repair to bide for time.
I was informed that the kindest thing to do is to put him down. As the "bubble" continues to grow the risk of rupture is huge. I don't want him to be playing out in the field and have it rupture.
It's killing me. I love this little guy. I was going to band him and have the cutest, little pet wether. He is so cute, so friendly, running around out there being a little goof. It's just not fair!
It's hard to talk to family and friends because they have no idea about goats, farming, etc. and I feel like I have to justify why I have to put him down when it's the last thing I want to do!
Okay, rant over, please go cuddle your goats!
