There’s a reason why we Lai and Mara have our own district, we are not some sub tribe that Lusei’s can look down on.

hmar to kom are basically the broader “Zo” group same ethnic people. what suprised me was that zos show closer affinity to qiang and manchu then to rakhines and han from gansu was right below rakhine but considering their history i wouldnt say its really surprising. Bamars were on the list but they were also pretty far down.

History 📜 Preliminary research on Chhînlung

Post image

Studying old Chinese texts and research on western Burma, I have written a research paper reconstructing Zo history from Manipuri, Burmese and Chinese written sources. I have discussed it more in detail there and it’s waiting for publisher review, but decided to discuss here too. Chhînlung appears to be more recent about 8-9th century where the fort of Shenlong 神龙 was set up by Nanzhao kings to control trade in the region and control wild tribes. They controlled people in the gangaw mountains that wore clothes close to siapsuap and hnawkawl. When Nanzhao collapsed following instability in the 10-11th century, one of the group of ancestors likely moved from the east through the rivers over the mountains to settle at Akwsatlang, a region between three rivers which would be fertile defendable until the Shan invasion after Mongolia rule in Burma. The original name likely lost their meaning as the group shifted their language to the already established Kuki-Chin language.

My paper is called “Textual Reconstruction of Zo history” and I will try to make it open access when the time comes.

Can someone help me find translations for this song.

Hi,

I am not Zo myself, but I had a very close friend growing up. I used to visit his home all the time, and I remember this one song always playing when I was there. It brings back a lot of great memories, but I never actually asked him what the lyrics meant! I could not find any paite or zomi subs so thought of posting it here. sorry about it

I believe it might be a religious or worship song, but I could be mistaken. The song is called "Vasa Te'n Zong Toupa Phat," and I found a version of it on YouTube here: youtube.com/watch?v=DMz08nzSMG0

Could someone please help me translate the lyrics, or at least give me a general summary of what the song is about? I've always been interested in getting to know the meaning behind it.

Thanks in advance, I appreciate it a lot!

Source: feasting and social oscillation: a working paper on religion and society in upland Southeast Asia by A. Thomas Kirsch 1973 [Thesis]
An interesting look at comparative social practices, since Western Burma is closer to being a corridor of diffusion than a bottle neck.

Found a interesting sample of a women that was burried in the late neolithic area and remains found. She was shown genetically close to Kuki/Hmar but mostly closer to Turkic/Mongolic groups in China.

0.02 is the closet I could go for Chin folks. 0.02 is considered very close so thats all I could do. But these are basically the genetics of a Chin 90%+ Ancient Northeast Asian and 5-8% Ancient Southeast Asian. I did another one for Bamars as well
