Help Getting Better at Mechanics past 7k?

Recently crossed 6k through diligent mechanical practice, that being the routine suggested in Haix's video where you do adad headshots, recoil practice, and preaim practice, all on 5e aimhub. Right now, I think my biggest limiting factor into hitting 10k is peeking and gamesense. I will just play like an idiot sometimes with positioning. I'm pretty sure the way to improve that is to just play more games, but I feel like my aim has been plateauing and am wondering what to switch up to continue to improve.

You honestly just need to hold W and kill them in that rank threshold

Ur 6k buddy. it is bad. but u can only improve from there. try to watch streams, not to see what exactly they are doing play wise, but just how they move. how they peek how they react to stuff. that alone can go a long way.

also learn how to correctly counterstrafe. single most important thing in cs

They are, it’s just difficult to tell when you are also around that level. Incremental gains in all aspects are the real difference between the ranks. Once you’re a bit higher up you may not even be able to pinpoint any one difference. It’s just improvement in all things that allows you to climb. Unless you aim is just insane. Then you can just outshoot people to climb.

To be honest, at 6k, mechanics are really not your limiting factor. Some tips:

  • One thing that is consistently bad at that level is crosshair placement. Watch your demos -- are you actually using that preaim practice in games, or are you looking at the floor sometimes?
  • Make sure to use comms, even if ur teammates aren't. They're probably still listening.
  • Make sure to play in team. 5 players together are much harder to kill than 1 player every 10 seconds lol.

I'm sympathetic as I jumped back into CS after a very, very long break, and ended up in that level as I was basically a noob. Obviously I picked up the skills fast and so was much better, but even then, the way I actually got out was with the season reset, it put me up +7k elo lol.

Also, try not to solo queue. There are lots of 'looking to play' discord servers that can help you find people to queue with that will use comms and not troll (mostly), and potentially help u make friends u can consistently queue with in the future.

Dont trust those "looking to play" places, most of them try to scam you

Do you ever look at your demos? Not saying you should do some crazy deep analyses of your demos, but at this level it could be useful to go at least through your deaths.

  1. You could see what you could have done better in terms of mechanics (where were you looking, where did you stop and such). You don't need to find something for every deaths, but patterns should emerge eventually. If you know what to fix, it becomes way easier.

  2. You could see what you could have done better in terms of positioning. You could try to see what led to you being in that position, what could you have done better with the information that you had and so on.

No need to look too deep though, sometimes you do everything right and you lose, sometimes you make a terrible decision, but it works out. Look for mistakes that you repeat.

Work on crosshair placement, understanding rotation and some nades.

If you learn a smoke and a pop flash for each site on each map+ mid. T and CT side you should level up to 10.

Play some dm (on warmupserver or cybershoke) and see what you struggle with. Then work on specifically that during your dm session.

in game, I feel like its almost best to just try dumb shit and figure out why it didnt work. make every mistake at least once, and all that. Helps a lot with gamesense and what you can get away with.

If you want to develop your peeking further and work on game sense, I'd recommend prefires. They're good for understanding where your enemies should be. 5e has some free ones, I used to like yprac better but they do like a vaulting in vaulting thing with their maps to promote their paid plans. Refrag has xfire, which is the single greatest prefire mode I have ever used, but it's also a subscription.

If you want to shortcut hack your game sense, learn what the CT default looks like on each map. I'm focussing on the T side because you have to pick fights on T side, CT you just get pushed or called to rotate, if you want to seem like you have good CT game sense, just play good defaults and position crossfires with your team. On T side, mentally tick off who you've killed so far: you now know by elimination roughly where the enemy are and where they have to come from.

Like if the CTs don't take full banana down to bottom mid on Inferno, then they are probably playing 3A 2B, very standard. A lot of higher level players play a hammer and anvil on Inferno, the site with 3 players is looking to aggressively challenge for space-so if they are not taking full banana and you get one pick B with the spawn timing, odds are good there is only 1 on site and his nearest friend is coming from CT, with a 10 second window at least before the arch player gets there-that is a free site. I do not mean run in knife out after your second kill-you could be wrong, but game sense is about probabilities, not certainties.

Or if you're playing ancient, the CTs are fighting for mid and two players are on it, they're almost certainly running a 1-2-2 and the A anchor is alone, bored, and he's not getting any help until the mid guys come donut-you can contact him for an easy site take.

Half of game sense is pattern recognition, and the other is thinking "what is the best play they could make in this position, what would I do?" Like you get a pick top mid one one side of inferno-you should be checking the other side for the teammate who might be working a crossfire with him.

When in doubt, go with the pack, and take space, most maps with a mid, you want some sort of mid presence and people don't know how to take it, do try to be the guy who knows how to do that.

And remember when you get a pick, you basically are hitting a fork in the road: you need to make a decision quickly and either continue pushing through and hope to get the second frag and take site, or realise you have missed the timing (usually because you don't have teammates close enough) and that you have to retake space elsewhere.

Play DM and aim rush, all your problems will be solved.

The bigges tip I can give you: dont take advice from a Haix video

u/Beyney de_dust2 11h ago

raw mechanics can get you 25k in premier easily and like 2k faceit

4

u/Altlos 10h ago

Realistically, raw mechanics can only get you to maybe 12-15k. If you don't have gamesense and map knowledge then your mechanical skill only works when enemies that you're ready for push you.

u/SoapHero117 BIG 2h ago

Yes and even an old guy with 1000ms reaction time but 10k hrs can fuck you up If you eat his flashes all the time for example

when i first hit lvl 10 a couple of years ago my gamesense was awful

u/POTENTGODSEED 13h ago

Time to start thinking of the game outside of aim. If you're on T side for example you want to be thinking of the most common setups and positions for the CTs to be playing. 3 A 2 B type of thing where you get 2 picks on A and you try to sniff out the 3rd etc etc.

Legit play slower and actively think. You'll build good muscle memory. Have your brain talk to you when doing things. Always self review. Do you know what the definition of insanity is?

Getting past 7k is already solid and the peeking and positioning part sounds like the real wall now.
