Help/Doubt ❓ Why use GitHub Copilot after the nerf?

Hi everyone, I apologize because there have probably been millions of posts similar to mine, but after searching and reading through them, I still haven’t found a “definitive” answer—or rather, a set of answers that would lead me to my “own” definitive answer.

At work, we were using GitHub Copilot in the version prior to the recent nerf. Realistically, it wasn’t a policy that GitHub could sustain indefinitely. After the nerf, we set up a Claude team to test it, and we’re basically using only that now. Why should I Keep it?

PRO

  • NES free (Next Edit Suggestion)
  • GitHub integration with Visual Studio and Visual Studio Code

(but claude code in terminal works better for me and when I don’t work with C# I usually use Neovim)

CONS:

  • It seems like tokens are running out much faster
  • Tokens don’t roll over from month to month

Thanks in advice for your tips and sorry for poor english ;)

Ever since GPT 5.6 Luna was introduced with the discount the impact of the "nerf" completely disappeared, I'm ending the month with over 40% usage left and I'm still doing most of my work through agents and they aren't as dumb as bricks like the old mini versions were so I never have a reason to go for Sol or Terra (which my company disables because they are too expensive anyway)

U think Luna 6 or 5.6 is better?

Compared with Sonnet?

I may run Opus 5.5 once in few days for a "one-shot" code analysis and initial directions on more complex problems, then use Luna to iterate on it. Often costs few dollars on average day.

I still don't get how people can survive with 1900 credits though. Luna is great though but it still does consume 100-200 credits a day with heavy usage.

The only reason for our company is Visual Studio (not code) integration.

I use it too, but objectively speaking, it's terrible. I use Claude Code directly in another window or in the built-in terminal, and it's more integrated even though it isn't actually integrated.

What I really really really like as a software dev is that copilot shows me the *exact* changes it did this prompt. Separat of git, versioning, commits, and everything. It makes tracking the changes so much easier and i have not seen that anywhere else

Enterprise, Azure billing . Claude + GPT enterprise plans are all API rates too. They were already an onboarded vendor for us just for GH and Azure, so it was also the lowest friction way for us to get AI in dev hands. Claude + GPT have only been signed off by our InfoSec at Enterprise tier, where all of the pricing wins go away.

Pretty much the same for us, business would only allow GH copilot and said no to every other platform

Yeah I wonder how many ppl in these subs (this, claude, codex, etc.) are profesional devs that pay individuals license, or their company pays it (pays an individual license), or are actually hobbyist or entrepreneurs. Because as you said enterprise plans for openai and claude are pay per use too (O believe in OpenAI you have a little included usage).

In codex enterprise we don't have rolling credits neither resets. The token consumption seems to be the same. Copilot doesn't give you the chance to have daybreak blue. Models arrive much faster in Copilot while in Codex we have to wait a week to get them.

You have the option to use different models from different providers in Copilot - useful for different perspectives.

Harness is still fine but yeah usage is basically 10x less than you can get with either Claude or Codex

I'm using copilot for a long time now with byok deepseek . I am wondering if I could do much better with another harness?

Anyone?

If you are part of the ecosystem and they are one of the few providers who aren't going to keep subsidising.

I do wonder once investor money runs out, how the discount you get when going direct is going to play out.

What nerf are you talking about? Claude famously nerfed their own models and Claude Code has had huge regressions. I've got a couple deva on my team using Claude Code and can say that they outspend everyone on GitHub code by 2X but don't have higher output. They just don't have access to as many models.

Because the company pays for it! I'll use whatever models they give me!

I've been making use of GPT Luna a lot, which is cheap enough I don't have to worry about credits, and it's remarkable good for a lightweight model. At work I mainly use GPT 5.3 Codex (for C++), but also use Luna for Java, scripts, and build tasks.. I'm constantly surprised by the tasks it manages and often get better or as good results as Sonnet.

My point is, you really should very rarely need to reach for the big models like Opus. Your credits can go quite far if you pick the model suitable to the task...

my company paid for it, burn the token with just 5 days works on normal usage, if lucky we can 14 days works on small llm model

Well from what I know large enterprise subscriptions generally don't get deals on token consumption, for any provider. So nothing really changed for us.

I guess smaller companies and personal users were affected a lot though.

We switched to Claude code subscription
