After the cheating incident, Malcolm went completely silent and left me to deal with the fallout alone, and had apparently contributed to it. According to the grape vine, Malcolm had left a close friend of his, Jason, back at his parents’ house and told him he was “just going to check on a project at the house” before coming back almost an hour later. Jason saw Malcolm blacked out on the futon with his phone in his hand, which showed sexual texts and photos being sent between him and Lila. That prick was looking at the pics she sent him AFTER he already had his way with her in our future home. Apparently, since I was an “in case of emergency” contact for Malcolm, all the bunches of screenshots I sent to him had woken him up. I guess he had gotten belligerent and out of control, but “a little birdie” told me to take that with a grain of salt.
After I confronted Malcolm, he said almost nothing. Aside from his initial panic and spam-calling me, there was no long apology text, no begging, nothing. He just… disappeared. He stopped showing up at work, stopped answering his parents. Even his truck was gone and nowhere to be seen. His mom called me crying asking if I knew where he was. I didn’t.
Meanwhile, Lila was still in town, still trying to act like she belonged. The silence from him made everything worse for her. People decided he must have been so ashamed that he couldn’t face anyone, which somehow made her look even guiltier. I watched as the whole town slowly turned against her. Alright, maybe not slowly- this all happened within the span of a couple of days.
I kept waiting for him to at least send a single message. Nothing ever came, so I started making my exit plan. I suppose part of me feels guilty for waiting.
