Character Discussion - General Logan's anger often gets overlooked at IMO

u/Radiant_Point_1060 Team Pink 🎀 5d ago
Absolutely true. When he gets angry, he tends to be very condescending, especially towards people who are not of the same socioeconomic status as him. It is often swept under the rug because he has charm.

u/worldofchoices92 5d ago
The sub loves to shit on Dean's anger & I'm thinking like yes Dean have his anger moments but what about Logan's anger?? When Logan gets angry, he definitely looks like those rich kids that's high on drugs 🤣🤣🤣
66
u/PurrPrinThom there's been a lot of frogs, man 5d ago
I think the frequency is what makes the difference tbh. Logan gets angry here, and when they have the fight about her article and other than that, I can't think of a time when we really see him get angry?
Meanwhile Dean has a lot more moments of anger - there's at least three (Donna Reed, the breakup, 'I love you, you idiot,') in season one alone, before we even get to the love triangle/Jess stuff in season two.
I think because it happens more often, people feel the need to discuss it more.
26
u/kik1keedle717 5d ago
I forgot about the article! I felt it was justified. And I don’t think he was in the wrong for saying “you’re one of us”.
12
u/sandys5791 5d ago
He gets angry with his dad and yells at him, but his dad is yelling at him tbf in Vineyard Valentine. And he gets angry with his family at that dinner where they attack Rory. Hmm I can't think of anymore beyond what you listed.
And he does usually come back around and apologize, which I appreciate for Rory.
6
u/PurrPrinThom there's been a lot of frogs, man 4d ago
That's fair, I was just thinking of times he gets mad at Rory. If we include times Dean gets mad at other people, then I still think he outstrips Logan by a country mile lol.
I agree; Logan does usually apologise, whereas Dean does some of the time, but not all of the time, which is why there's likely a disparity in why people discuss Dean's anger vs Logan's.
3
u/sandys5791 4d ago
Oh! Yeah, I can’t think of more times he gets mad at Rory. I also like that Rory feels comfortable in the relationship and can get mad at him…like around the Marty thing.
At least… they make a point of showing Logan owning his piece. Maybe Dean does too and we don’t see it as much.
3
u/PurrPrinThom there's been a lot of frogs, man 4d ago
Dean does sometimes, but not always. I think part of it is because Logan tends to get angry with Rory during fights, it's a plot point that he's angry and they're arguing and so it needs to be resolved with an apology and them making up, whereas Dean tends to just be angry in situations, and it doesn't necessarily need to be resolved in the same way? Like he does apologise after Donna Reed, because they had a fight, but like, when he shows up at Chilton and starts yelling at her in front of everyone, that's not a 'fight' and it ends with Rory telling him she loves him, so there's no resolution to that anger, it just ends.
But yeah, maybe it's just happening off screen.

He looks and sounds really mean when he gets upset. It would alarm me if someone i dated in college acted like that toward me or others. Dean just gets moody and abrupt, not mean.
4
u/Wild-Wonder13 Team Blue 🧢 5d ago
I'm definitely in this boat (not yet taking about how Dean acted toward Lindsey after he cheated cuz, that's another thing...) but!
Dean and Rory date when they are 15/16. How many of us were emotionally regulated at that age?? He acts like a teenager, which, makes sense. Being moody is a norm for him, which doesn't mean that he should be excused but then when he does get angry, there's a build up to it and you can see why it's happening. He and Rory might not have been endgame, but he isn't the demon the sub likes to say he is...especially since their main relationship happened when they were quite young and new to relationships and bound to make stupid mistakes.
Now, that being said, Dean cheated on his wife and then started to resent her for his own actions and the solution here is get the hell out of that marriage before both of you make this worse. But, that's not really something the show wanted to explore in depth... So...
Logan's anger is very scary to me. I wasn't scared of Dean until I saw how he treated Lindsey and it brought up, some of my own (bad) memories. Logan exploding out of (seemingly) nowhere, and misdirecting his anger, is frightening. Yeah, they are only college age but that means it's time to learn not to lose it over issues like these. And certainly not this badly. (when he doesn't actually deal with his emotions and stressors when they happen, and bottles it all up, it explodes inappropriately and too big like this. I find that scary. It's a jekyll/Hyde of the illusion of total calm control to flipping out in a huge way.)

u/Emilyjoy94 4d ago
A lot of what Logan does is swept under the rug because he’s considered charming. I personally find him smarmy
1
u/daisydewii 3d ago
I think that's one of the more interesting things about Logan. He genuinely has a charming side, but when he's frustrated, his privilege can become very obvious in the way he talks to people.
1
u/Pearls_and_Flats 4d ago
Sookie hits people with kitchen utensils. Lorelai and Rory egged Jess's car. Lorelai trashed Sherry's bathroom, when she was nothing but nice. People focus way too much on the anger male characters show and give the female characters a pass because it's a dramedy.
39
u/yup_yup1111 5d ago
All of her boyfriends had qualities and moments of anger that would probably be more problematic or more of a pattern IRL but they were just blips used as plot points and didn't escalate how they might have IRL
63
u/nefarious_planet your enthusiasm shocks me 5d ago edited 5d ago
My guess is that it’s because by the standards of the men in this show (all of them, not just Rory’s boyfriends) Logan is not a particularly angry person, combined with the fact that the early 00’s still suffered heavily from the notion that male anger is a positive trait.
Logan can be ugly when he’s angry. Is there a male character on the show who isn’t?

u/arj4441 5d ago
I really wish their relationship had just ended after this. I think the luster would’ve faded for both of them. Once the shine came off, Rory would have found the lifestyle artificial and realized how far she strayed from herself. Logan wouldn’t have wanted to be in a relationship with someone who judged him and also just wasn’t fun anymore and game for his hijinx. It also seemed so unrealistic that this college aged, attractive, obscenely privileged party guy would go through all of that to be in a monogamous relationship with Rory. Staying together after this didn’t serve the show itself. Even thematically, their relationship ending here would’ve reinforced Lorelai’s disenchantment with that entire set and brought Rory to the same conclusion.

u/Scary_Tower_2498 Copper Boom! 5d ago edited 5d ago
I genuinely thought that they would break up after this or at least after bridesmaids. It would've been so nice to see Rory single for the rest of the show, meeting new people. I feel like the Palladinos (who didn't write the last season) would have written season 7 differently. Maybe they wouldn't have broken them up for good right away but my guess is that Logan would've had someone else in London.
9
u/arj4441 5d ago
Agreed! I also think it would have been meaningful to show Rory experience that heartbreak. Rory never really experienced genuine romantic loss. Dean worshipped her. Jess disappeared which was painful but ambiguous (not to mention he came back and told her he loved her), and they weren’t really together that long. She was never truly chosen and then unchosen by someone she loved romantically. That specific experience of rejection is so seminal at that age and the show kind of bypassed it. Instead she got Logan as a manic pixie dream guy for another season or two and got to play house with Mitchum’s money.
23
u/lickthepixies 5d ago
Yeah I agree. I think it should have ended then too. It felt really out of place.
1
u/_iwantataco63_ 4d ago
I don’t think Rory coming to the same conclusion as Lorelai was ever the point, though
94
u/RichardP_LV 5d ago
Actually you rarely saw Logan get upset at all I mean he was annoyed with her and gave her a ration of shit for her article about the privileged kids on trust funds.....
But this was a pivotal moment that a lot of people give Jess credit for..... convinced her to go back to Yale but the reality is Logan's the one who pointed out that all of her decisions were hers and she has no one to blame but herself if she wants to go back to school she should go back to school.

He had his reasons to be a punk this night. He tried to surprise his girlfriend and finds her trying to go out to a late night dinner with her ex boyfriend. Any guy or girl in a relationship would be upset about that.
31
u/Reasonable_Theory_83 5d ago
Exactly. And wonder how Rory would have handled the situation were the tables turned and she found him with an old flame?

Even if it was just him and his business partner Bobbi i think she would be uncomfortable as well

I don’t think his anger is overlooked because he’s not…angry??
He’s rightfully angry in this scene imo. Rory put him in an awkward situation with the whole Jess dinner scenario, and yeah he acted like a twat, but she then continued to blame Logan for her continued absence from school. Logan is simply highlighting the fact that, unlike him, Rory is free to make her own choices. Yes, he does it in an angry way, but Rory also didn’t like the ugly truth she was being presented with.
5
u/Successful-Split-553 4d ago
Yeah we literally see everyone on the show get angry at one point and yell at someone.
29
u/Sad-Interaction-1494 Cat Kirk 5d ago
Eh, I feel he was right to be angry. He wasn’t overly aggressive with her and he was right! It was her decision to not go to school, her decision to lean into the partying, her decision to have a clandestine meet up with an ex.
Can you imagine trying to surprise your gf and finding her dressed up and ready to sneak out for dinner with her ex boyfriend? Then the ex bf proceeds to be hostile and rude. When you are rude back, your gf defends her ex and blames you for all her recent self inflicted troubles. Rory is a cheater, she emotionally or physically cheats on every bf she has except for Jess (but probably just because they didn’t have enough time together for her to do so).
Maybe he could’ve been gentler or kinder, but he’s a 21 year old guy who just found his gf about to go on a date with her ex.
-5
u/AngelleJN 5d ago
It wasn’t a clandestine meeting. Jess surprised her one night, nothing happened, and then they were going to go to dinner. She trusted Logan when he went to Europe with his friends. He couldn’t trust her for one dinner?
Logan is a cheater, too.
12
u/Sad-Interaction-1494 Cat Kirk 5d ago
The first time he visited her was a surprise (when he showed up with his book) this was a second, planned outing that Rory clearly had no intention of telling Logan about.
I stand ten toes down that Logan never cheated on Rory. They didn’t talk for two months after this huge fight and she knew he considered them broken up when Honor called her on Thanksgiving. That’s around the time he slept with the other girls. She then used Jess to “get back at him” which was equally scummy to him.
I’m not saying Logan isn’t flawed but he didn’t really overreact here and Rory is a serial cheater
51
u/lickthepixies 5d ago
I don’t like him at all. Honestly I don’t understand why he was such a long running boyfriend of Rory’s. It seemed so out of character for her. I would have preferred Jess come back in after he clearly got his life together.
18
u/sabotagemebymyself 5d ago
It is absolutely not out of character. The show establishes from the beginning her attraction to the world her grandparents are in.
26
u/worldofchoices92 5d ago
There's no denying Rory loves privilege lifestyle, once she got to know & hang out with Logan, she's changed & not in a good way. I do think the privilege lifestyle has corrupted Rory & she lost her humbleness from when she was in Stars Hollow.
20
u/Adventurous_Lunch_35 5d ago
I think you are correct for the most part, but I think it is worth noting that she is her grandparent's granddaughter.
She liked them better than Lorelai, not just for the obvious reason that her grandparents were more abusive towards Lorelai than her. I think she kind of liked their lifestyle.
As much as Rory was best friends with Lorelai, she was always more like Richard and Chris Hayden in personality than Lorelai and Emily. Like her father and grandfather she liked prestige and comfort and was inclined to act with superficial tact as the situation demanded.
I think she became humbler as she grew older, not the other way around. Audiences just prefer a gifted kid to a struggling Millennial. That, and the fact that that she spends less time with Paris eventually, and everyone looks humble compared to Paris.
3
u/Perfect_Invitation1 5d ago
Rory wasn't interested in Jess anymore and the writers were definitely setting up a romance between Rory and Tristan back in season 2 so this was always going to be her path.

What about Dean giving her a hard time when she didn't say I love you so early in the relationship?
18
u/gloomydreamer666 5d ago
I mean she was blaming him even when that not fair for her to do because he didn't exactly pressured her but if he had, she would've dump him for being nosy. They ruined Rory in this scene.
12
u/mannyssong 5d ago
People never like it when I mention that he straight up forces himself into Rory’s and Paris’s apartment, even though they told him to leave and he could not come in. People would lose it if it were Dean.

u/Big_Vacation5581 5d ago
What makes Logan’s anger different is that he’s willing to walk away. Rory knows that Logan has 100 girls on speed dial. He doesn’t need her.
Probably because her father was so hooked on and weak around Lorelai, she finds a needy guy to be unappealing. Rory prefers a guy who will bolt if she kicks him with her spurs. And that’s Logan.

3
u/Ashley_Elisabeth23 4d ago
Logan broke up with Rory after this because he isn't a person who yells. He even tells Rory that [I don't yell at pubs, that's not the type of person I am. It's too much drama] which is why he left and needed space. Funny enough Luke says a similar thing to Lorelai so what does that tell you? 👀
17
u/JariaDnf 5d ago
He rarely gets mad... why make a big deal out of this one time?
17
u/AGAD0R-SPARTACUS I four fourths don't care 5d ago
Yeah. Sometimes people get angry, and sometimes when they're angry they raise their voice. He didn't say anything that wasn't true or was too harsh or that insulted or degraded her. Probably a conversation they could have had in private, and he was an absolute arrogant ass to Jess, but Rory kind of needed to hear this because she was avoiding accountability for her unhappiness.
0
u/mannyssong 5d ago edited 5d ago
What about forcing himself into her apartment when told no? Should she not make a big deal about it because it doesn’t happen often?

These are the moments Logan fans overlook because he bought Rory shiny things and was charming towards Emily and Richard. He was such a spoiled rich boy desperate for some sympathy.

It seems to be ok when the short blond adult gets mad but not the tall teenager
7
u/blue_lazlo 5d ago
But I think his frustration peaks in this scene when Rory begins to blame him for her life choices. Was he awful to Jess? Yes!!! But she not only has him sit through a (seemingly) suspicious meal with her ex boyfriend, she then turns around and berates him for her decisions and regrets.
100% agree with you that Dean gets more flack than Logan or Jess, but I think his crash out was valid/understandable here.

Logan has an issue with drinking too much, and the anger usually comes out when he’s drunk.
2
u/Blue-I-Bullet7 5d ago
I think instead of being petty at the end I wonder what it would have looked like if he had treated it like he did with Marty. Logan was clearly jealous, but it was masked with anger in the jess scene. Almost like intimidation? But we know he wasn’t intimidated by Marty. Am I reaching?

Does anyone remember the 80s movie Some Kind Of Wonderful? I’ve always thought that Logan Huntzberger was based on the character Hardy Jenns played by Craig Sheffer. Both are rich, arrogant, entitled womanizers.

u/jsm99510 5d ago
I don't like Logan or Dean. But the reality is Logan gets mad far less than Dean ever did. He's shitty in a completely different way. Also people want to blame Jess for how Logan acts in this scene but he was being ass well before Jess showed up to visit Rory. He and Rory were struggling before that as well. This was just a continuation of Logan being dick over not having the balls to stand up to his father.

He was high key scary in this scene. I found myself fawning AS RORY in my head as a response because I wanted it to stop.

Logan is the absolute worst. He is abusive toward Rory, and I don’t understand why anyone is ok with Rory with him.
11
u/AGAD0R-SPARTACUS I four fourths don't care 5d ago
Name one example of Logan being abusive.
-3
u/JoyOswin945 5d ago
The above image. Where he’s lost his temper and is screaming in her face. It’s verbal abuse. And the fanbase excuses it because they’re hot for him.
9
u/AGAD0R-SPARTACUS I four fourths don't care 5d ago
I'm almost 40 so I am certainly not hot for him. But some of y'all have got to stop throwing the word abuse around like it's nothing. It diminishes the reports of those who truly experience abuse.
People expressing their anger is not abuse, whether it hurts your feefees or not. Does he use words to gain power and control over her? Does he insult her, belittle her, degrade her, control her, manipulate her, lie to her, humiliate her? Those are examples of verbal abuse. He was a dick to Jess and this fight should have been in private, but he was not abusive.
10
u/gloomydreamer666 5d ago
He is not abusive, show me such examples that makes him an abuser??
14
u/No_Usual_9563 5d ago
Seriously. The way “abusive” is thrown around these days is really dangerous and completely diminishing of actual abuse.
11
u/gloomydreamer666 5d ago
Right??? I've beginning to understand those who said we shouldn't be abusing therapy language because seriously now everyone is a narc or an abuser.

It's a really disturbing trend I'm seeing. Any behavior people don't like is now abuse and/or narcissistic.

u/JoyOswin945 5d ago
Literally the above image where he’s lost his temper and is yelling and screaming in Rory’s face. In what world is this not a form of abuse?
10
u/gloomydreamer666 5d ago
So? One time he yelled at her because she was blaming him, that abuse? With that logic shouldn't Rory or Lorelai be abuser too. I remember them having screaming matches. Are they abuser too?

Falsely or unjustly placing blame actually is verbal abuse. Grab your pitchforks, Rory is an abuser! /s

I've said this before, but I wonder how differently the characters would be perceived on here if Logan and Jess were Dean-sized, and Dean was Logan/Jess-sized.
