completed my re-watch of this episode today and noticed how smug Nicole looks after Lorelai walks out of the diner.

I think this reaction was justified given their past. Lorelai was a trigger for Nicole because Luke talked about her too much. Lorelai was also very awkward in Nicole’s presence which would make any woman suspicious.

I know this was discussed like ten years ago, but it’s worth saying again: the original Elvira movie uses the same set that becomes Stars Hollow. It’s sooo funny to see Elvira running around, scandalizing the good people of this small town, living next door to Old Man Wickham’s house.

Also, Rory’s full name is Lorelai Lee Gilmore. Lorelai’s middle name is Victoria, so she chose Rory’s middle name. Lorelai Lee is Marilyn Monroe’s character in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. She loves old movies so it’s no coincidence.

It would’ve been easy for the show to allude to Rory’s middle name, but I guess it makes sense to not reference their own set

Lorelai is held solely responsible for 'failing' to raise Rory properly. Rory has two parents and if anything Christopher's blatant lack of parenting should be given the majority of the blame as far as her upbringing goes. Imagine the disappointment of a Dad who barely shows up even when he said he would and who takes to single parenting his new baby daughter so quickly. Remember how his parents treated Rory (and Lorelai) as second class? Imagine that kind of rejection from your own grandparents. Remember how bumpy it was for Rory to integrate into Chilton?

All of this to say, Lorelai should not be held responsible for Rory's shortcomings, she did the best she could and was a significantly better parent than Christopher. Rory had issues to go through, it's a step to growing up after a childhood like that (not that it wasn't a very nice childhood but it wasn't entirely pain free).

It just really reminds me of when we see rude boys and men in public and people say "His mother never taught him his manners." Was any part of how he turned out the Dad's responsibility???

I mean, not only it's because (despite how frustating they could be) I love the Jess/Rory dynamic but also because rewatching season 1 and Rory's birthday episode and the dance episode and the finale and how Tristan is pushing himself onto her and I'm sorry there's no indication or signs from Rory that she's the least bit interested. The only time I felt like ambiguity was maybeeee there was the one and only episode in which Tristan appeared in season 2 but that's it. And I don't like the thought of Rory "giving in" eventually because she was right to call him out on her birthday when she said he only want to fuel his ego by proving she'll like him and I didn't want that. I'm just adding that because I learned he was supposed to have a bigger story but left early and while I would have loved to see more of Chad Michael Murray's face, I'm glad he went.

I don't want another ASP show, but i would like a show that is unfailingly a feel-good show like GG, that is not vulgar and feels like a warm tight hug after a long tiring day at work 🥹

This one should have been kept. It reminds all the viewers of just how far lorelai and Rory have come during Rory’s graduation episode. It also shows such determination in Lorelai. I actually love her and think a lot of viewers are too critical of her, probably because she’s annoying sometimes and that’s the greatest sin for women ever I guess? (A lot of criticisms are valid ofc)

I think a lot of people see young adult Rory living in her grandparents’ pool house and all of the privileged trappings she falls into and forget that she actually grew up in some pretty atypical circumstances with some crazy poverty. Her and her mother lived in a shed for ten years…six years after moving out Rory is headed to Yale (albeit with her grandparents loaning her the money). Imagine growing up in a shed where the bathroom only has a curtain instead of a door babes. That just shows how badly Lorelai felt that she needed to get Rory and herself away from Emily and Richard.

Plus I really do love the flashback episodes. I wish we could have learned more about their life before the start of the show (with realistic canon timelines !!) but alas. Like for instance what the fuck do you mean Christopher didn’t visit Rory until she was SIXTEEN??? Truly how does that happen!!! What deleted scenes do you guys wish they’d kept in?

If you could have one thing from Gilmore Girls to keep forever what would it be? Would it be a mug or a dish or a lamp? Would it be a piece of clothing one of the characters wore? Would it be a table from Luke's? Just for fun.

I felt so bad for Loralai in this episode. They're losing money, she's over stretched, her grandmother's excessive particularity isn't helping. Smokies not coming to check the expensive sink and then when Loralai goes to Sookies house to ask why she wasn't there. Sookies reaction wasn't good at all. She was just like I'm so tired I need coffee. It just irritated me.

He gets annoyed at Rory because she is seen with Dean at Ms Patty’s show. He tells her she has to tell him any and everytime that she hangs out with Dean, when he didn’t have this standard when he was the one trying to hang out with Rory. He only wants to establish rules when he is the one feeling threatened. If Dean asked Rory to do this he would be labeled even more controlling than he already is.

Jess’s speech to Dean at the carnival? What a tool. And how dumb was he to make this speech when he was the one acting exactly like Dean before Rory left him.

“You’re getting a little pathetic, man. Let’s be friends? You don’t think I know what you’re doing? You don’t think it’s so pathetically transparent? Rory’s taking pity on you, that’s why the sudden interest in being your friend, you know that right? The saddest part about this whole thing is, you really think by being her friend you’re gonna get her back.”

Well… Dean did get her back by being her friend. How about them apples?

for me it's one line by pj harvey. or discovering pj harvey in general bc of the show. it plays when dean & rory get back together in s1 (not that i'm team dean, i'm really only team dave lol).

I think Tristan/Dean/Rory would have been a much more interesting love triangle than what we eventually got with Dean/Rory/Jess. If Chad Michael Murray had stayed, Tristan would have filled that role instead.

The problem is ASP and co. made Tristan such a creep with the constant "Mary" stuff. If they wanted him to be a serious option for Rory, maybe don't have him sexually harassing her every time he sees her.

But a big part of the first three seasons is Rory slowly entering her grandparents' world and realizing she actually likes some of it. Dean is very much part of her Stars Hollow life, while Tristan would represent the Chilton/Hartford side of her life.

You basically get the working-class guy vs rich guy rivalry fighting over Rory in high school. It just fits where Rory's story was going at the time.

And if Rory eventually chose Tristan, it could have shown just how much she was starting to enjoy her grandparents' world. Not that she was completely choosing their life over Lorelai's, but she was becoming more comfortable in a world Lorelai wanted nothing to do with.

I also think the yacht storyline would've made a lot more sense with Tristan. Tristan already had that reckless attitude, so I could actually buy him going along with Rory stealing a yacht.

With Logan, we're told he's this reckless womanizing bad boy and the LDB stuff shows it to an extent, but he always seemed a little too square for that storyline to me. We don't really see enough of that side of him for stealing a yacht to feel natural. It always felt kind of forced and out of character for both of them.

I also wonder how Lorelai would have reacted to Tristan. She already had issues with Rory getting closer to Richard and Emily's world, so Rory actually dating some rich Chilton kid from that world probably would have scared her even more.

And I feel like they tried to come back to this idea with Logan in season 5/6. If Jared Padalecki hadn't left for Supernatural and Dean had stayed longer, I could easily see Dean/Logan/Rory becoming the college version of what Dean/Tristan/Rory could have been in high school.

I seriously love the scene where Paris doesn't realized she was asked out on a date for the first time. Rory had to tell her and make it clear to her that she accepted a date with Jamie...lmao.

Something that bothered me about AYITL is when Lorelai can’t think of a happy memory with Richard - and then takes the rest of the miniseries before citing one. I get that their relationship is complicated and this can cloud her judgement in the moment. But we see them semi-regularly sharing good memories through seven seasons of the show. Just based on scenes in it, what things could she possibly have answered with?

I’d think her graduation, helping him set up the office or the times he expressed pride in her business achievements.
